Mail: Broken glass (again), parking ‘tickets,’ a new jam

More from Roadguy’s mailbag:

Loyal reader Becky appears to be a magnet for car break-ins — she reports that she and some neighbors in her apartment building were victimized for the second time this month:

BeckyPhoto2.jpg Now my passenger-side window is broken… they tried to take my stereo this time but failed miserably, as you have to take the whole dashboard off. They also opened my armrest and glovebox and dumped all those contents out… if I didn’t have anything worth stealing in there last time, why on earth would I have something there this time!?! …At least the police knew about it prior to my knowing. There was a case-report thing on my window … so they were already out there.

Becky says that she’ll soon be making her previously scheduled move to a new apartment, so we’ll have to see whether she’s able to leave her bad car karma behind. (A post on the first break-in is here.) Maybe she needs to try one of those handwritten “no radio” signs of yore.

Alert reader Third Base Line wrote in to mention a different kind of paper notification: the unofficial parking citation. (Click here for a look.) The slips are a little snarky but largely benign (much like Roadguy), and TBL correctly noted that I should order myself a dozen such pads.

Also in my inbox was this question from my colleague Robyn:

Do you or any of your readers know why traffic along Washington Av. toward I-35W seems to have rapidly become perpetual gridlock, especially at evening rush hour? … Lately, it takes me 15 minutes or more to get to 35W after 6 p.m. Do all the Guthrie people get off at 6? Or are the drivers all condo owners? I’ve noticed a lot of them head past 35W and into the West Bank area. Any answers in your crystal ball? You do have a crystal ball, right?

Well, I used to have a crystal ball, right on the dashboard, but it fell during that last collision, leaving the floor of my car looking a lot like Becky’s.

In reality, I’ve noticed this particular traffic situation without using any psychic tools, and, like Robyn, I’m a little befuddled. Shouldn’t the condo crowd be coming home at that hour? Don’t theatrical types work in the evening? Are scads more commuters suddenly living in the northern suburbs? Has the timing of the arrow on Washington changed? Are they leftover fans still lost after the last Vikings game?

Your thoughts and theories, as always, are welcomed below.
