Mailbag: A low bridge and some mysterious structures

Roadguy will be heading out this afternoon to check out the “Share the Road” event on West River Parkway in Minneapolis (click here for info), but before he does, let’s take a look at a couple of pieces of illustrated mail from the mailbag.

First up is Dale the Motorcyclist (not to be confused with Dale the Truck Driver). Dale the Motorcyclist was out enjoying the nice weather last weekend and offers us this report:

I was riding my motorcycle around, and I saw an interesting warning for a low bridge when I came into Le Sueur on MN93. These pictures were taken with my phone camera, so the focus and color quality are pretty awful.

Dale’s phone camera might actually take better pictures than Roadguy’s regular camera, but either way, here’s the first shot, taken as Dale entered Le Sueur on 93 from Highway 169:

Roadguy thinks it’s quite helpful of the road folks to measure your vehicle for you to see whether it’s too tall. If it is, another sign just down the road…

… gets all excited and lets you know. The bridge, which Dale photographed after passing under it, is indeed pretty low — just 12-foot-6:

And, just off the road between the warning signs and the bridge, there’s this eye-catching sight:

Oops. (Whoever was driving probably used a stronger word.) Dale writes:

I don’t know if the trailer just recently had an encounter with the bridge or if the city (or highway department) just left it there as a more graphic warning. Either way, it’s pretty funny.

Indeed. The road folks can only do so much, and sometimes a nonverbal message works best. For a complete set of Dale’s photos, visit his Flickr page here, and for what I think is an aerial view of the site via Google Maps, click here.

Our second (and final) piece of mail today is completely unrelated, yet also concerns roadside sightings. Alert reader Adam writes:

Hi Roadguy. I was driving along Dakota County 46 just east of Hwy. 3 in Rosemount and saw something very strange along the south side of the road. I’ve attached a couple pictures to give you a visual.

They are cement walls paralleling the road, about 10 in a row, with another 3 or so in a second row further back in the woods. On the back side is a cement support wall angling toward the ground. Each wall has two circular holes, a few have handles (you can kind of make out the handles on one of the pictures), and they each have a strip along the top like something was once attached to them. I am completely baffled by them. Do you have any idea what they might be?

Roadguy had no idea, and after he looked at Google’s satellite pics of the general area (click here), he still had no idea. So he’s hoping that an alert reader will be able to help us out.

That’s all for now. Watch this space for news and photos from today’s event — not sure when I’ll get them all uploaded, but I’ll do my best to make it snappy. In the meantime, send your e-mails, photos and questions to Roadguy, and feel free to comment below — especially if you witnessed the alien spaceship that dropped the monoliths in Rosemount.
