Links by the dozen

Professor Roadguy went a little overboard with today’s syllabus, but at least it’s all optional reading (or listening, or viewing, or attending):
- Open house today in St. Louis Park: The topic is the future of the Hwy. 7/Wooddale intersection — click here for details, then scroll up a bit on the same page to share your thoughts on walking and biking in SLP. (Thanks to alert reader Eric for the heads-up.)
- Roadside memorials: On today’s Strib op-ed page, a north metro resident offers her opinion on roadside memorials erected to honor crash victims. Click here for her commentary, here for the original Strib story.
- A dangerous crossing: Yesterday’s Pioneer Press took this look at the spot where a high-schooler was killed while crossing Hwy. 61 in White Bear Lake. The death has prompted a push for ways to make the area safer for pedestrians.
- GPS: The Strib says more motorists are diggin’ it; click here.
- Speedy construction: Remember the truck explosion that caused part of a freeway to collapse near San Francisco? In about 25 days, the damage was fixed. How’d they do it so fast? Click here for a story from the San Jose Mercury News, here for one from the S.F. Chronicle, here for the New York Times version.
- Bikes: Today’s Strib has this story on keeping kids safe as they learn to ride a bicycle, while this story from several days ago looks at what bike shops are stocking.
- Transportation, traffic deaths, oil and Iraq: One of Roadguy’s Colorado buddies named Dave (there are at least two) sent along this link to a Ted Koppel commentary on NPR (text and audio).
- Streetcar thoughts: The Strib’s official book review of “Twin Cities by Trolley” is here.
- Low clearance: Friday’s New York Times offered this photo and story about a truck driver who ignored the height limit for the Lincoln Tunnel. Oops.
- Thoughts on the Twin Cities’ road system: Alert reader Stephen directs us to a new post on his blog.
- Rock the Belt 2007: A local band appeared at high schools in Roseville and Bloomington last month as part of a state effort to get teens to buckle up. A 98-second YouTube video is here, a WCCO-TV story is here.
