Nearly all of my waking hours for the past 13 days have been focused on the bridge collapse, but it wasn’t until Friday that I ended up right at the scene. I was sent to cover a news conference that used the bridge as a backdrop, and reporters were allowed to walk up to the red police tape blocking off the site.

I hadn’t needed any more convincing of the magnitude of the disaster, yet it was still sobering to glimpse the destruction, and to see the small, human details, like the pink blanket and the blue beverage cooler that had tumbled out of somebody’s van, or the contents of the bed of a flipped-over pickup truck, frozen exactly where they’d landed ten days before.
