Pothole watch (updated)
Posted on February 14th, 2008 – 6:05 AMBy Roadguy
Roadguy’s been taking a different route to work the past couple of weeks, and it’s been a bit jarring — not in a psychological sense, but a physical one. That’s because one of the lanes of northbound 35W has some pavement buckles that, in a different location, would pass for speed bumps. (They’re in the curve as 35W heads toward 94 east and the U of M exits.) Roadguy enjoys being airborne, but prefers to do so in actual aircraft, not his humble vehicle.
As this three-part graphic points out, we’re heading into that special time of year where the deep freeze (which causes the buckles) gives way to the dreaded freeze-thaw cycle (which gives us potholes). If you know of a big gaping hole that we all should watch out for, please give us a heads-up in the comments below. And if you happen to drive on the aforementioned curve on 35W, take Roadguy’s advice: the 35-mph sign is your friend, especially if you lack dental insurance.
UPDATE: This afternoon, MnDOT sent out this news release warning of a particularly bad pothole season; it includes a link to MnDOT’s pothole page. (You can report potholes on state highways via the pothole hotline, 651-234-7500, or info@dot.state.mn.us.)
