Biking with baby

Since we’re on the subject of biking, a quick word of introduction from me, Kitty, your substitute blogger, though it won’t be necessary after you read this post: I like to bike places, and I have a kid. So let’s talk about small children and bike safety, yes?
We got a rear-attached bike seat, rather than a trailer, thinking it would be less likely to get tangled in traffic and more practical for biking on city streets (plus we have a mini-garage). Since then, I’ve heard the rear seats called baby-launchers, and read a little more on the subject, but haven’t seen the definitive word on which is safer. This bike helmet safety site had good pro/con discussion, as well as links. This one offered more specifics.
Everyone seems to agree on a couple of things: Helmets and weight specifications are important, and babies under 12 months shouldn’t go on bike rides. Kids seem to be happy either way. In the trailer, snacks and stuffed monkeys are handier, but in a seat, it’s easier to chat.
What’s your experience?
