Mailbag: Helping one’s parents choose a vehicle
Posted on April 17th, 2008 – 6:05 AMBy Roadguy
As Roadguy often has to point out, he’s Roadguy and not Carguy (sometimes even his colleagues get confused). But cars are part of the realm of transportation, and alert reader Keri has posed a question that I’d be interested in hearing your answers to:
I’m hoping you can help me. My mom and dad are in need of a new vehicle. They have two late model vehicles that both need about $1500 of work. My dad is 75, and we recently took his keys away because he’s no longer safe on the roads. My mom drives 20 miles round trip to work, 4 days a week. The rest of her driving is minimal.
Where I need your assistance is in helping them determine the best vehicle to purchase. My dad is a very large man (height and girth) so they need a vehicle that has both leg room and head room on the passenger side. Also, he has bad knees so vehicles that are either very low or very tall are extremely difficult for him to get into.
Can you offer any recommendations? They are not opposed to looking at both new and used, but don’t want to spend more than $25K.
Thank you for any help you can be!
As I pointed out to Keri, I’ve only purchased three cars in my life, so I don’t have tons of advice to give. (One bit of wisdom: I bought my first used car from a convent, which I highly recommend if you want a very, very clean vehicle.) If you have thoughts to help Keri’s parents, please post them below.
