The tracks will be back on Washington Avenue SE.

When I’m not sitting around blogging, I’m often writing about the Central Corridor light-rail line — and spending many, many afternoons in the Metropolitan Council’s meeting room. But yesterday, after a couple of votes, the route through the University of Minnesota campus was officially chosen: trains at grade, down Washington Avenue SE. That means no tunnel, and no northern alignment through Dinkytown (and, Roadguy hopes, fewer hours of PowerPoint presentations in downtown St. Paul).
One of my colleagues (The Guy in the Next Cubicle) stopped Mercil’s auto repair shop on Washington yesterday to talk with the folks there (see this story). I visited with them over the winter, and they showed me this photo, which I don’t think I’ve posted before (click to enlarge):
It’s the repair shop, back in the day, when streetcar tracks lined the brick street out front. Everything old is new again.
