The $4 gas contest: We have a winner, even as we lose our shirts

Freedom has its price. Taken Monday evening in Prescott, Wis.
A few weeks ago in this post, Roadguy asked you to submit your guess as to when the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas would hit $4 in the Twin Cities. Prices blew right past four bucks on Monday, meaning that if I can confirm with our friends at AAA that June 9 is the official date, then alert reader Prof. S., who guessed June 6, is our winner. I’m going to see whether I can get a gas station to sell me a $4 gas card (the promised prize), or perhaps he’ll instead accept my copy of “Carpool Confidential,” which continues to linger on my desk.
Stories about gas prices are all over the Web. Alert reader Matty recommends this NPR piece on how road and traffic design can reduce consumption, while The Guy in the Next Cubicle liked this map, which shows the percentage of income that households across the country pay for gas. It ran with this sobering New York Times story on how the cost of gas is hitting rural residents (something I learned a lot about in Winona on Monday while writing this story about the new ferry service there).
