Got a news release this afternoon with the winners of the Baiku contest. (Perhaps unsurprisingly, none of the Baikus posted here won.) Some excerpts from the release:

BIKE ON announces GLOBAL BIKE DAY BAIKU POETRY CONTEST Results

First Place:

Weaving through streetlights
the rush of darting raindrops
push past the sunshine

– Sarah M.

Second Place: NOTE: This Baiku was submitted in Japanese and follows the 5-7-5 pattern in Japanese. This translation was provided by a native speaker of Japanese who coincidentally (magically?) appeared (on bike of course) to help the bewildered judges.

Blue object
faster than wind
It’s my bike

– Nathan T.

Third Place:

Bicycles are nice
So nice I will say it twice
Bicycles are nice

– Nathan W.

Honorable mention:

My life has been changed,
My love and I bike each day,
Exercise my heart…

– Greg

My life in turmoil
where do I go to find peace
there you are sweet bike

– Shelly I.

Mi bicicleta
Es muy económica
No gasolina

– Andrea G.

I celebrate life
by riding my bicycle
life celebrates me

– Stu C

wheels go round and round
they spin past me as I walk
love the spokes that spin

– Ella J.

Todos los días
Tengo ganas de andar
Por la ciudad

– Pablo C.

The second annual Baiku Poetry Contest was held June 22, 2008, at the Midtown Global Market. Judges were Robert Lilligren, Scott Smedberg and Jamez Smith. The contest was sponsored by Sunrise Cyclery. A drawing was held for a Bianchi bicycle from Sunrise Cyclery. Here is the randomly chosen Baiku:

Yo llegué aquí
Sobre mi bicicleta
Y me divertí

– Teresa M.

Running through stoplights
in rush, darting in traffic

The laws don’t apply
When you’re on a bicycle
Whine lots about cars

All laws DO apply
When I ride a bicycle
Or I would get creamed.
