Mailbag: Speeders, bike lanes, wacky parking

The alert reader known as Curmudgeon Geographer calls our attention to a story from Science Daily: US motorists increasingly ignoring speed limits. CG writes:
Interestingly, I cannot help myself making a leap connecting this study with research that was cited in the book “Traffic” … that noted that a nation’s propensity to break traffic laws correlated strongly with a nation’s acceptance of arbitrary government and corruption. The result of my leap of logic is to wonder if this isn’t a sign Americans are more accepting of corruption in their government. Call it Slouching Towards Albania?
It does feel like anarchy out there sometimes. Maybe that’s why this article finds that bicyclists are willing to go out of their way to use bike paths and lanes. (Thanks to Shaun the Former Intern, city of Minneapolis bicycling guru, for sending that along.)
Speaking of anarchy, Dale the Truck Driver sends along further evidence:

I suppose if you’re going to take up two spots, the far end of the lot is the best place to do so. But still, I ask myself, as I so often do: Why? And how hard can it be?
For many more sights that will make you fear for the intelligence of your fellow driver, check out Dale’s blog. And keep those e-mails coming.
