Stuff to check out: Bridges and trains

The comment period on the new Hastings bridge ends tomorrow. The home page for this $225 million-plus project is worth a look — check out the arch, girder and cable alternatives.

This past weekend’s New York Times Magazine is dedicated to infrastructure, and it’s all online. I particularly enjoyed this slideshow about the bridge being built downstream from (and much higher than) Hoover Dam.

Back-and-forth over the Central Corridor light-rail line continues. Last week, it was a Strib editorial and a PiPress editorial on the same day; today it’s this counterpoint.

Speaking of light rail, travelers who land at the Humphrey Terminal and make the long walk to the light-rail station via the parking garage will be getting some climate control for their trek.

I was at Hoover Dam in March, had NO idea they were building that bridge. It is massive and very very very high up. Don’t know if I’ll ever get back there to go over it when it’s complete.

I vote for the able design at Hastings.

Oops, that’s cable design.

Interesting that the Hoover project, which seems to be a much larger project than the 35W rebuild, is costing half as much to do. Perhaps because of the accelerated schedule and bonuses?

The cables supporting the new arches add strikingly to the photos in the slide show, making it appear as a suspension type bridge, but they will disappear once the span is complete.

There’s plenty more info and photos on the Hoover project here:
