The view from your (fast-moving) window

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Roadguy has been spending entirely too much time reading about politics lately, but every now and then, something transportation-y comes up. Like this: Andrew Sullivan, who describes his blog as the “highest ranked one-person mainly political blog in the world,” offers some mild criticism of taking photos while driving, then posts a second photo taken by someone who was driving. Sometimes the view from the windshield is too eye-catching to resist.

Sullivan also mentions that he doesn’t drive. Maybe Roadguy should try that — I’d certainly get more blogging done if I never left the house.

0.9 parking spaces isn’t enough? How about a 9-car garage?

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I just got an e-mail from carproperty.com — “Where the garage matters.” After reading the discussion here, I thought everyone might want to check out some of these real-estate offerings, including this five-bedroom home with 21 garage spaces. The only Minnesota listing has five garage spots. (Browser note: I couldn’t get these pages to load with Firefox, but they worked with Explorer.) Some of these houses have more indoor parking than a lot of Twin Cities apartment buildings. Maybe they’d be open to sharing…

Should a house be required to have parking?

More news from elsewhere: Alert reader Snowman sends along this link about a Washington, D.C., family that has no car and wanted, perhaps understandably, to build a house with no parking — and had to fight for the right to do so.

Now you can walk to Iowa — from Omaha

Alert reader Chris writes to call our attention to the new Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge that opened on Sunday in Nebraska. (World-Herald story here, blog photos of related parasailing here if you scroll a bit, design images here.) It’s like a much bigger version of our Sabo Bridge (old Roadguy video here) — both are for bikes and peds, both are suspension bridges, and both are named for members of Congress.

Foes of earmarks probably did not attend yesterday’s festivities — a $19 million earmark paid for most of the project.

‘Tear down this freeway’

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

This morning, a group called the Congress for the New Urbanism issued this list of “Top 10 Freeways Without Futures.” Nothing local (or even remotely nearby) made the list, but as we’ve noted before, the Twin Cities area was never a hotbed of elevated freeways.

Two ‘holidays’ I forgot to mention

Friday, September 19th, 2008

It’s National Park(ing) Day, wherein people convert parking spaces into pocket parks. Here’s the Minneapolis-St. Paul page — looks like much of the action was over the lunch hour, but there’s an event this evening.

It’s also International Talk Like a Pirate Day — and really, if you think about it, pirates are all about transportation.
