There’s nothing I could post right now that would as much fun ajp.jpgas the discussion going on in Joe C’s “Around the Majors” blog about why people boo AJ Pierzynski. The astute commenter “cmathewson” posits that booing AJ is like booing the pro wrestler Baron von Raschke, and I think his words keep the booing in its proper context:

AJ’s kind of the Baron Von Raschke character for the rival team. I don’t think it’s the trade as much as the character. Like the Baron, he’s brash, arrogant, and a knucklehead. All the qualities Garrison Keillor says Minnesotans resent in outsiders. And like the Baron, he’s a great competitor. The best villains are good at what they do. Like the Baron, he should be proud to be booed. At least he’s not ignored.

I boo AJ for no other reason than it makes me feel as obnoxious in the stands as he is on the field. Inside, he’s laughing about it — and so am I.
