Guest Post: Playing Devil’s Advocate or “Yes, Minnesota, there ARE Sidney Ponson fans.”

(Note from Howard: Last weekend, commenter Bonzo43 wasn’t happy with yet another unflattering mention of Twins pitcher Sidney Ponson. I asked Bonzo43 about writing a post that would explain why she roots for Ponson with the same enthusiasm that others have for Santana, Mauer or even Nick Punto. Bonzo43 took me up on the offer.)

A while back, I saw a news item announcing the poll results for the Most Hated Man in the World. I breathed a sigh of relief when the “winner” of the honor was not Sidney Ponson. Whew! Now, of course I wonder if I should have checked the results, because the way some folks write and talk about him, Sidney MUST have at least finished second.sid2.bmp

I know I am one of a select group who admits to (still) liking Sidney, a lot. HE IS MY FAVORITE PLAYER! I believe he still can show the Twins and their fans that he IS a bona-fide MLB starter, and may turn into a winner once more. Will he get going the right way before the team yields to the vocal masses demanding Ponson be replaced? Will the team start playing well again, so everyone can relax a bit? (I think the pitchers’ recent “Fielding Follies” may be a result of trying to do too much, being too aware that the offense has been having a hard time.) Stay tuned. I have my fingers crossed, and just hope the people who make those decisions don’t give up on this guy!

Why would anyone still like Sidney? Well, I say, How can anyone NOT like this guy? I can relate to the guys who don’t always win, aren’t all-stars, but do have skill, play hard and show some emotion. Guys who sign autographs at the ballpark, who don’t sulk on Photo Day and avoid cameras despite being demoted to bullpen duty the day before. I like guys who admit their mistakes, can take the blame when they cost their team and don’t mind giving credit to teammates.

And Sidney meets all of the above criteria. He also has a great sense of humor, and is very quotable (usually-but I feel his silence has been a wise choice when he has clammed up.) He also has one of the nicest smiles around. Too bad it hasn’t been seen often enough in 2007.

Not everyone can win a Cy Young. Is it a crime to be an underachiever? Or to have human problems off the field? But it sure was easy for fans and the media to turn on Sidney. He was once in demand, now a team is laughed at for thinking of signin him. No, his stats have not been impressive, but does that make him Suddenly Satan?

I think because we all know way too much about his off-field troubles, fans and the media have judged him to be a criminal, a monster, and not fit to play in front of children. All because of what is actually a disease! (And I really thought how honest he was about rehab and his new lifestyle was kind of inspiring, especially last spring. Most people probably don’t appreciate how hard such interviews must be, but he wanted to be honest and set the record right, and he also felt he should not be ashamed.)

He took the right action when he saw his problem — as he has said, you won’t get sober just because a judge orders you to rehab — until you decide you want to get better, you won’t. No one really gives him credit for this, but he was not SENT to rehab. He went on his own. (Sure, it was more likely he’d return to baseball if he did it. But I believe his motivation was more that he was tired of what was happening and not being in control.)

I admire Sidney as a person who makes mistakes, but tries to do better. Right now, I sense he’s very frustrated with his pitching results — more so than any Twins’ fan could be. He has high standards for himself as a pitcher. No one needs to criticize him because he’s always been good at ripping himself for bad pitches, stupid fielding, or anything else he feels he did wrong.

Read his analysis of his own games. He can be hard on himself even when he wins. (For example, in 2005, he beat Johan Santana for Baltimore – but what did he say post-game? That he felt bad for outfielder Jay Gibbons because he made him get an error whensid1.bmp Sidney forgot to back up his catcher! I doubt many would have realized Sid’s mistake, but he felt bad about it because it made a teammate look bad!

What a horrible, disruptive non-team player Sidney is!

I just guess I am not a normal fan, so I like Sidney. I like his style of pitching, I like seeing his reactions to what happens on the field. I like his hair! I know he’s misunderstood by most, but he doesn’t usually let that bug him. He loves playing ball, he likes having fun, and he is his own person. He may fail too often for his talent level, but really, him just making the majors was more than anyone should have expected from him. Adjusting to life in pro baseball in a strange country had to be a challenge for an Aruban kid who started his pro career at 17.

And maybe his adjustments to new teams, villain status, and sobriety have been even more challenging. So while many demanded his release before spring training had started, I had hopes he would be able to change their opinions. He did, but four starts into the season, he was booed at home. Some seem to have pools on when he will be released. There seem to be campaigns to drive him out of town. What is wrong with people?

Why root against Sidney? He’s only trying to live his life and pursue a career he DOES STILL have the ability to succeed at! How exactly does he merit such cruel treatment? Because he has obvious flaws? Because he is a bad Fantasy pick? Because bald guys are jealous of his hair? Because he went to rehab for alcohol?

Not every pitcher with his stats gets this insane response. How can so many be hateful about a mere VERY human being? He’s got to be PURE EVIL and fans like me are his minions! Oh well…I’ve been called worse! And Sidney has been called worse yet!

While I agree that many of the responses to Ponson can be incredibly harsh….he is only a human being, and human beings are fallible. We CAN all get caught up in the idea that these people put themselves out there, so we should be able to tear them down. And while I believe that some criticism is due, I also think much of what’s said about Ponson has gone overboard.

That said…he isn’t a good pitcher right now. And being the good natured person I am, I want to give him a chance, but a pitcher with a sub-2.0 ERA in the minors just looks more appetizing to me than Ponson’s current 6.42.

I’m sure he is a decent guy, and doesn’t really deserve a lot of the things that are being said about his non-baseball life, but his numbers speak for themselves and they don’t exactly speak well.

I don’t think Sidney is in a class by himself as far as struggling Twins players. He’s not pitching brilliantly, that’s for sure. But there are plenty of guys on the team who aren’t hitting, pitching, or fielding brilliantly, and there’s every excuse in the book for those people.
And this game is totally sucking.

this guy sucks, it’s time for Ryan to get in there and bring up Garza, and then trade Baker for another right handed bat in the lineup

Your post was nauseatingly long. Ponson needs to go & Ryan needs to acquire some offense other than Lew Ford.

I agree with Bonzo43. The guy needs more backup. He’s not put himself forward, he’s moved cautiously with the new team, he’s honest, and he knows how to keep hid mouth shut. I’m just waiting for him to re-emerge. cant say more, since Bonzo43 said it all. Nay-sayers need to cut him some slack, which is something we ALL need from time to time. He’s good enough for MLB, and that’s pretty awesome right there.

Ponson sucks and so do the pirhana’s. No hitting and class A pithing aint gonna cut it. Sidney was a failed effort! They need to get rid of the trash and bring up Garza. Last 2 weeks have been an embarresment! I can no longer watch. Don’t drink the koolaid.

He’s obviously not good enough for MLB anymore. He’s one only 2 games, one of which was because of great run support. You can’t pitch at the MLB level when you only throw well once out of every 10 starts. There are at least 3 guys at triple A who are better than he is. Lets give them a shot, they couldn’t do any worse.

Ponson is a bum. It was a valiant effort but is officially failed. I will give the twins credit for gambling on Ortiz AND Ponson since the former seems to be alright. There are way too many good arms in AAA to wait any longer. Forget Garza…check out Kevin Slowley’s stats right now.

As for the rest of the team….holy smokes they stink. Is Nick Punto really a major leaguer? He is terrible with the stick and overrated with the glove. There is no left fielder either. No production whatsoeover.

And someone needs to tell Cuddyer to takes some pitches. Morneau to stop swinging at the breaking ball a foot outside and Tori to lay of the junk in the dirt. This team is as bad as all the other MN teams. i am drinking the kool aid

Ponson has had plenty of chances to prove himself.
This is the majors. If he can’t get the job done, he shouldn’t be starting for the Twins. Send him away…

Bonzo

I, for one, do not criticize Sidney for his personal life and obstacles. We’ve all made mistakes, and none of us have them discussed on Sportscenter.

That said, just because he appears to have done well to fix his personal issues does not make him immune to criticism of his game. It’s no different than the rest of us. If I’m a car salesman, and I’m not selling any vehicles, I’m probably being let go, and there is probably someone more qualified to replace me. Needles to say, Sid hasn’t sold many cars.

I think you all missed the point. This piece was pretty clever satire.

I like Ponson, too…seems like a nice guy…people are too hard on the guy.

I don’t disagree with most of that, but he’s not a very good pitcher and thats no good for a team trying to win a division.

Well…. actually, drunk driving IS a crime….

Ponson is not a good pitcher right now, and hasn’t been for some time. However, I agree that it’s ridiculous that the home crowd is booing him. I was absolutely appalled at the game today — he might be sucking pretty badly, but he is a player for your team, people. Doesn’t anybody remember the “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” adage? It’s a good one. I understand if you don’t like him. Neither do I, but I can at least keep my yap shut. I can even manage to clap for him when he has two strikes against a guy. I’m a Twins fan, after all, not just a Hunter or a Punto fan.

I’m all for DFA’ing or demoting the guy. However, I’m not going to demoralize him while he’s out there throwing the ball for my team.

KKM says:

As much as I am not happy to see Ponson still in the rotation, I am not about to boo him. I am shocked that people would. It’s not like he said something mean about Minnesota or something. He is just not playing very well (not like he is doing it purposely). Even at the home opener this season, fans cheered for other players and when Carlos Silva’s name was announced, it got pretty quiet (IMO). No boos, but it is interesting how people will not cheer just because they are not happy with the decisions being made.

Regardless of how they are playining, I feel as though all players need to be cheered.

I don’t think the crowd was booing Sidney so much as they were booing Gardny and Terry Ryan for keeping the guy on the club while three lights out prospects sit in the minors.

Gus says:

May 14th, 2007 at 9:53 am

While I’m glad to see him go, those of you who expect Garza or Slowey to show up and be the answer are either naive or forgetful. They are in the minors for a reason-they need seasoning. That said, I can’t imagine anyone being much worse than Ponson. I don’t have anything against him, and I actually hope he catches on with someone. Cincinnati seems to have a thing for washed up ex-Twins.

Bonzo43 says:

I still feel time is what Sidney needed-and a little time off in the pen or AAA might have been enough to get him right. So now he will get some time off, and hopefully another team who is not in as much of a hurry and doesn’t have as many future Cy Youngs in AAA (forgive my sarcasm, I am still a bit upset, and I don’t like cocky prospects). I would not say he ptiched well, he wouldn’t either-but if he coudl regain his control and keep his sinker working, he can do fine. It does take time sometimes…Silva’s lucky his slump was in spring. (And there is no excuse for booing or silence for Carlos, Sidney or anyone else…I dislike Mike Sweeney of KC and HE got some of that, and even I felt it was stupid! I hate when Mark Quinn got derisive cheers when he finally drew a walk one year. You think these guys don’t know when they do badly? Would you like everyone at your job to jeer you when you mess up? I’m glad my co-workers can’t see my stats and boo me!)
