A small sign things are getting more serious

Gardy said last night that the Twins will skip over one of their starters next week — 0johan.jpgSlowey or Baker — to allow the others to keep pitching on their regular day instead of getting an extra day of rest because of an off day. He told LaVelle that it would either be Slowey or Baker who would be skipped.

There was some frustration in commenter quarters earlier this season when the Twins kept their rotation intact instead of using Santana (and Boof, presumably) every fifth day. Back in April, Gardy said that Santana had a say in the decision, which is appropriate, and I suspect the Twins are hoping that those few extra days of early-season rest are going to yield benefits later in the season.

If you remember toward the end of last season, pitching coach Rick Anderson talked about how beat-up Santana was and LaVelle wrote this interesting piece last July about Santana’s between-starts regimen.

Sometimes, the numbers don’t tell you a thing. I went to check out Santana’s career starts with four days or rest and with five days. Here are the results of that exhaustive research:

With four days of rest: 46-18, 3.00

With five days of rest:  27-13, 3.00

He’s that good.

It’s too nice a day to spend much time on the computer. Get outside, people!
