Some cranky thoughts after a loss

*The Boof thing is getting a bit ridiculous. Fine for five innings and a disaster thereafter. Is it physical, mental or some of each? I don’t know, but I want it solved. So far this season, opposing batters have almost a 1-in-4 chance of getting an extra-base hit when they face Bonser in the sixth inning — 45 at-bats, 6 home runs, 5 doubles. The guy who was considered the No. 2 starter at the beginning of the season has come to look more like a candidate for a long-relief stint, depending on what Matt Garza shows in his start against the White Sox on Friday.

*Did anyone else think that when A-Rod clipped Justin Morneau on the play when A-Rod yanked his hamstring, his base-running path looked more than a little bit like the route the villanous AJ Pierzynski took when he clipped Morneau’s foot last month?

*Yes, Nick Punto’s offense is driving everyone batty, but I hope nobody thinks Jeff Cirillo brings anywhere near the same glove into the field. Derek Jeter’s “single” on a double-play grounder hopped right past Cirillo and scored two runs. If Cirillo starts a DP, the Twins escape the sixth down by two instead of four. Maybe it’s the creaky knees, but Cirillo looks downright Batistatonian in the field.

*By the way, Cirillo’s OBP against right-handers is .311. Punto’s is .328. There’s a time and a place for Cirillo in the lineup — and that’s against lefties, not against Roger Clemens. If the Twins are going to carry Punto’s glove in the field, it’s all the more reason to find a banger for the DH spot. Like soon.

*I’m not going to urge anyone to waste their time voting for Pat Neshek for the final spot on the All-Star team because the whole process demeans the spirited and interesting debate in the previous post about who should be the AL starting pitcher. Dick-n-Bert wearing “Vote Neshek” t-shirts on the air is just as lame as an election in which people are encouraged to vote 25 times per day — and can vote an unlimited number of times by knowing some basic computer skills. I know it shouldn’t bother me that much, but it does.
