“…the home run has held a special place in baseball…”

That quote is from Hank Aaron’s scoreboard tribute to Barry Bonds last night in San Francisco.
Other thoughts:
“I’m indifferent. My home run chase was Hank Aaron and the Babe.” — Rockies manager Clint Hurdle.
“I’m glad a guy from my generation did it.” — Arizona broadcaster and former Cubs first baseman Mark Grace.
Noting that Bonds is hardly the only one to play the game under suspicion and investigation for using steroids, ESPN’s Peter Gammons said that Bonds’ achievement is representative of a “whatever it takes era” in our culture.
Former Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent offered up this working definition on ESPN of a “tainted” record by saying, “It means we don’t know enough.”
But he suspects that, for an unfortunate reason, results of baseball’s look into steroids and other performance-aiding drugs will support Bonds’ claim to the home-run record: “I think we’re going to find out that cheating was widespread. Not just 30 players, but likely hundreds.”
Asked what it was like to watch the home run, Vincent said: “I thought I’d be reasonably indifferent … but I was very excited for him.”
And you?
