THIS is what I’d like to hear about the Twins

After losing to Oakland last night, Tigers Manager Jim Leyland offered these comments about his team, which just happens to be tied for first place, in the Detroit Free Press: “We’re not playing good enough to win anything. We’re fooling ourselves if we think we’re going to win pitching and playing the way we are — and managing the way we’re managing. I’m responsible.”
In the Detroit News, Leyland said: “If we don’t pitch better and we don’t hit better, we’re not gonna win (squat). … If we don’t play better, we’re not gonna be involved in anything — that simple. I’ll support them (Tigers players), and I’ll defend them to the hilt. But facts are facts. And we were (garbage) tonight.”
Meanwhile, in Seattle after another night of mistakes and wasted opportunities, Gardy said: “That was a tough ballgame for us. We were very excited in the dugout, we came out and tied the ballgame up. But we just couldn’t execute there at the end.”
“Excited in the dugout” is what I’ll be expecting this weekend when the team from Coon Rapids goes to the Little League World Series. From the Twins, who have watched the postseason slip from their view while offering up silly rationalizations (see last paragraph of the link), a bit more is expected.
