A few things for you to read

Minimal blogging until the end of the weekend, but here are a few things to read.

The Strib’s resident pub crawler, Tom Horgen, put together this guide to pregame hang-outs before heading to the Dome, and makes the point that light rail has expanded the party zone from the traditional within-walking-distance place. In other words, there are a bunch of places beyond the traditional (and solid) standbys Hubert’s and the Little Wagon. Somehow, though, pregame at Wasabi just doesn’t sound right to me.

Also, i guess this was a week for bloggers to interview bloggers and baseball writers. Aaron Gleeman e-interviewed ESPN.com’s Rob Neyer after reviewing Neyer’s new Big Book of Baseball Legends and the bloggers at TK on Toast visited with our guy, LaVelle E. Neal III, who explains (among other things) why he’s not a Twins fan. (That’s called being a professional, folks.)

Enjoy the weather!

I’m curious as to what teams Len3 followed as a youngster. I thought i read somewhere that he’s from Chicago so is he a Cubs or Sox fan?

He was a Sox fan. I was a Cubs fan. We’re both fans of Da Bears to this day. Unlike me, however, LENIII doesn’t have a Cade McNown jersey.

Haha, I remember watching McNown’s first game against the Vikings and I remember thinking, “Damn, this kid is going to be good!” Guess I was wrong on that one huh?

Howard are you a Twins fan? Were you a Twins fan before you became their beat writer? Did you “turn it off” once you took on that assignment? Just curious.

I guess I need to define what being a “fan” means to me: Do you root for their success and feel dissapointment when they’re unsucessful?

What will happen to Hubert’s in 2010?
They can’t rely on only Vikings games.

A-Joe,

I wasn’t a Twins fan before I started covering ball. I was a Cubs fan. I didn’t really become a Twins “fan” until a few years after I stopped covering them. Yes, it’s easier to walk into a winning clubhouse than a losing clubhouse. But the objectivity is part of what a journalist takes on when s/he signs up for the print medium. I was happy for people when they did well, but I never went home disappointed when they didn’t. You asked a good question. I wonder what it would have been like if I’d grown up a Twins fan and then had to cover them. Maybe a good question for Joe C, the Faribault native.

It’s a longer walk, but for me, a coney and a cold beer at Bullwinkle’s before the game makes my day.

I lived for 9 years in the UAE, and every summer, I couldn’t wait for that first Bullwinkle’s coney whenever I got home. It’s still my fave.
