Minnesota Twins — the breadbasket of baseball
Posted on August 24th, 2008 – 12:33 PMBy Howard
Strip away everything else about this season and, in addition to being in first place as I write this, the Twins have established themselves as the purveyor of front-running talent to the entire major leagues. Check this out:
*Torii Hunter goes to Los Angeles as the Angels have a 16-game lead in the Americal League West.
*Jason Bartlett, Matt Garza and Grant Balfour go to Tampa Bay and the Rays become baseball’s best story by leading the AL East.
*Johan Santana gets traded to New York and, despite a season full of team struggles, the Mets are in front of the NL East.
*And, let’s not forget reserves Augie Ojeda and Alex Romero with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who lead the NL West by three games.
Including the AL Central, that’s five out of six divisions. Just figured I’d throw that out there.
Also, in case you’re looking for something to do on Monday, I’ll be on Minnesota Public Radio’s Midday show at 11 a.m. Gary Eichten and I do an annual Labor Day show from the Fair, but with the Republicans coming to town next week, we got evicted from the Labor Day slot. So we’re a week early. Some of you may know the Labor Day tradition of fabulous gifts for people who step up to the microphone at the Fair and ask questions. We have another haul of incredible stuff that’ll make it worth your time to blow off work and come out. MPR is 91.1 FM in the Twin Cities and on the web here.

You know, the Twins also took Craig Monroe off of the Cubs hands…
AJ and the White Sox, Ortiz and the Red Sox
And Silva signs with the Mariners…oops. They’re not good and neither is he.
I’m sure there are several ex-Twins on last place teams as well. How’s Silva working out, Seattle?
and Milton is having a cy young year
Livan will surely be the final piece the Rockies need to…oops, maybe not.

How did that work out for the Expos?
Without Garza (and Bartlett, but mainly Garza), the rays might be in third place in the A.L. east. And without Johan, the met’s would probably be a few games behind the Phillies. But let’s not kid ourselves, Hunter has deffinitely contributed to the Angels but, without him, they would deffinitely still be in first by a lot of games with the team they’ve got and the division they play in. And Oleda and Romero for the Diamondbacks, please. Look at out team: without Young and Gomez we almost deffinitely wouldn’t be in first. I’m sure Young’s hitting and Gomez’s speed has won us at least 5 games this year.
And also, why do people boo A.J. when he comes to the Dome? I know he plays for the Stinky Sox, but without him (and the moronic front office of the S.F. Giants), we wouldn’t have Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, and Delmon Young (through Matt Garza)!!
Oops, we got Boof Bonser, not Matt Garza (or Delmon Young), for A.J. But still!
I myself have wondered for years why AJ is booed in the Dome. He was traded, he didn’t choose to leave, and he played hard on a playoff team for the Twins. I wish someone would explain it.
Looks like lots of people here taking some stuff way too serious. It is interesting that a large part of last years roster — Gaerza, Bartlett, Santana, Hunter — are sitting in first place across baseball. Go find another team that did that without cleaning house.
People booing AJ. Yawn.
Howard, not just baseball. How about KG and almost Moss. Though not in first currently, certainly Ortiz for 2 WS.
BTW what the heck is that entry that seems to get into each blog each day that cites the day’s headline and “originally published by…”? The first time I saw one I thought it was some blogger accusing JoeC. of not being original, but now it appears every day in each blog.
Dan, AJ booing has been explained over and over before. If he’s on your team you luv him. If he’s on another team you boo him because he’s pesky and obnoxious especially with his attempts to influence the outcome of a game by “selling” dubious calls to umpires, etc. etc. It has nothing to do with the Twins exclusively. He’s booed everywhere. After his fight with Michael Barrett they probably boo him at Wrigley Field worse than at the Dome.
P.S. to Dan: just watched BBTN - prime example today of AJ being a pest - creating that safe call by crying “interference.” BOOOOOOOOOO!!!
“Dan, AJ booing has been explained over and over before”
I’m sorry I don’t sit behind the computer screen over and over to catch all the things said on here.
Dan, my bad…at least you probably get other things done!!! ![]()
Off topic but I feel this is the best place to post this. Bob Costas claims that baseball is one of the proofs for the existence of a supreme creator. But would such a deity allow anything but white uniforms for the home teams and gray for the road teams? I think not!
Howard - as my mom used to say - If you don’t have anything good to say - don’t say anything…..been reading your Twins coverage over the past few weeks and you sound like an angry old man. As I like to say - - it’s really easy to right negative, takes some brains to be insightful…
“Bob Costas claims that baseball is one of the proofs for the existence of a supreme creator.”
Bob Costas must be trying to justify his career choice.
Baseball is not THAT important to the human race and Bob Costas’s work is not to be confused with that of Mother Theresa.
If the Supreme Creator could umpire all the games himself, maybe He wouldn’t be credited with such a flawed sport.
What about me? I’m lighting it up with Houston now, and we’re on the rise. Forget Johan and Torii…Twins starters and outfielders are doing fine. It’s too bad they don’t have me or my old buddy Grant Balfour to pitch the 8th inning.
Bob Costas? Just finished watching the little guy signing off from Beijing. Why is he yakking about baseball?
Oldguy - guess Livo and Liriano must be atheists! Sigh, and I was so hoping we’d seen the last of those sleeveless wonders!
The Twins will soon faulter far behind the White Sox due their inability to score runs against good pitching team. The not quite good enough Twins will finish only in second place if they are lucky.
