One small, hopeful weekend thought

Watching Nick Blackburn regress into a one-pitch pitcher Friday night was painful, but having Slowey-Liriano-Baker going the next three games gives a glimmer of hope.

One unusual thing to consider while the weekend games unfold: Typically, a team “controls its destiny” if it’s in first place, meaning that anyone trailing can’t do anything about it as long as the team on top keeps winning.

The Twins are in the unusual position of controlling their destiny if they finish the weekend no more than 2 1/2 games back. That’s because of the three games coming up with the White Sox.

Of course, it would be a whole lot easier if the Twins would get it together in Florida and the Royals would do for them what they did for the Twins in 2006 with their closing weekend victories over Detroit.

Obviously, the quality of baseball being played right now doesn’t give as much hope as when you start messing with the numbers, which is also a pretty skinny window right now.
