Rock & Republic is very last season

If there was ever a sign that premium denim was on its way out, this was it. The California-based company left a line of people in the 20 degree weather for over an hour. (I went into a nearby restaurant to wait for it to wither, though would have left if not with friends.) The show itself proved that it’s hard to do sexy in a way that isn’t cheap. Denim with metallic finishes was everywhere, see-through lace body suits and evening gowns that seemed to be falling apart, possibly on purpose. Where were the funky jeans with embellished pockets that made designer Michael Ball famous? Not in this show. I suddenly miss the days when denim designers would focus on the latest washes and rises.
The finale featured models parading with glasses of champagne. Most looked awkward and a little confused. So was I. Fashion week in L.A. must be very different, indeed.
