Reusable shopping It-bags

Plastic bags are so 20th century. You’ve probably heard that Americans throw away some one billion plastic polyethylene bags each year. It’s an addiction that has to stop.

Designers are getting into the spirit–Anya Hindmarch’s “I’m not a plastic bag” tote was one of the most sought after fashion it-items of last year.

Also getting into the act? Target. In the April issue of Vanity Fair (for subscriptions at least), I was thrilled to find this sassy red reusable bag. Nice, right?

In addition to the reusable Lunds and Byerly’s bags ($1.50 each), my other favorite reusable bag of the moment is “My Bag Cares.” It is made from 55 percent linen and 45 percent untreated cotton. For every $20 bag that you purchase, one tree is planted in the U.S. These bags are seriously sturdy.

I’m on the lookout for more reusable shopping bags–let me know if you find any that are practical and chic.

Check out Envirosax. http://www.delight.com/Envirosax-Delightfully-Pretty-Reusable-Grocery-Bags

You can get them in a variety of patterns and colors. You get a set of five complimentary bags with a little carrying bag when you order. My favorite part is that they roll up to the size of a roll of quarters and then have a snap closure. So they’re really easy to just toss in your purse for the times when you’re just out shopping and don’t want to get a bag at each store in the mall. I get tons of compliments on mine about how cute they are and how practical they are since they can roll up so small in your purse.

It would be great if Target would follow Ikea’s practice and charge for a nickel for the plastic bags, while selling the reusable bag for 59 cents.

The Envirosax are very cute. I’ve been meaning to pick up some reusable bags from Baggu. They fold up into wee little envelopes. There’s a shop near Neiman Marcus in the skyway that carries them, or you can buy them online.

Brava on reusable bags — love the Byerly’s bags, which I’ve sent to Minneapolis ex-pats all around the country. The only problem is… remembering to take them into the store.

Remembering to take them to the store–and as someone else pointed out–being accused of stealing them when you bring them back. Nobody said avoiding plastic would be easy!
