Best games and DVDs of 2007

Check out my list of the best games and DVDs of the year, if you haven’t already.

In video games, it’s interesting — or should that be, refreshing? — that after all the hype heaped upon Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, it hasn’t appeared at the top of many best-of lists, including mine. It’s not that Halo 3 was a bad game; in fact, it was great. But BioShock, my top pick, was such a better experience, especially from a storytelling standpoint. One flaw I can’t get past in Halo 3 is how the final level of a game known for being one of the most popular first-person shooters comes down to driving, which is the worst aspect of that game.

In DVDs, it’s telling that my top pick for the year was Blade Runner, a special-edition re-release. That shows that the format has fully matured after 10 years when a 25-year-old movie that has been available previously on DVD ends up being the year’s best. Of course, having a five-disc set with five versions of an influential cult classic is certainly not typical. Still, the industry is slowly moving to high-definition DVD formats, regardless of consumer confusion over rival formats (which I’ll address in tech trends for the coming year, to be published Tuesday), and that’s where the future of the format appears to be.
