Yearbook Yourself wins Webby
Posted on May 5th, 2009 – 7:25 AMBy Randy A. Salas
Yearbook Yourself was the only one among four Minnesota-connected websites to win a Webby Award, it was announced this morning. The fun site, which allows users to
upload their pictures and see themselves in school yearbooks through the decades, won the People’s Voice Award for best viral marketing. That award is selected by popular vote. The judge-picked Webby Award for that category went to Diesel XXX SFW. Yearbook Yourself was created by Minneapolis-based Colle+McVoy.
Here are the other Minnesota-connected nominees and who won in their categories:
Our Message of Hope — created by Minneapolis-based Brew, Sevnthsin and others — lost in the video mashup/remix category to Bill O’Reilly’s Producer — The Unseen Footage! (Webby and People’s Voice).
Yo Gabba Gabba! — created by Minneapolis-based PUNY — lost in the exclamation-filled celebrity/fan category to Yahoo! OMG! (Webby) and E! Online (People’s Voice), and in the television category to Flight of the Conchords Lip Dub (Webby and People’s Voice).
Pizza Luce — created by Minneapolis-based Pizza Luce — lost in the restaurant category to Parish Food and Goods (Webby) and Smokey Bones (People’s Voice). (I knew the latter would get the popular vote. It’s eye-candy city.)
The winners will be honored June 8 at a ceremony in New York City. With two winners in more than 100 categories, plus special-recognition awards, that is going to be one long ceremony. A YouTube channel will be set up on June 9 to show highlights from the event.

How can “Yearbook Yourself” win any web site awards when it is not an active functioning web site?
Lance, Yearbook Yourself was created for a back-to-school campaign last year, as part of a promotion for a developer of shopping malls (thus the viral marketing nomination). A new version is expected to be up in July.
