Blu-ray player selling for $119

Following last week’s news of an $800 portable Blu-ray player, Best Buy is now selling a set-top model for only $119. Sound Advice columnist Don Lindich ns-2brdvd.jpguncovered this great deal, the result of the retailer clearance-pricing an older model to make way for a new one. The sale model is the Insignia NS-2BRDVD, from Best Buy’s house brand. Don has the details about its features on his blog, so be sure to check it out, but the upshot is that it’s a good basic player with a Profile 1.1 setup at a killer price.

As Don points out, the NS-2BRDVD is still listed at its $200 MSRP on the Best Buy website, but actual stores are selling it for as low as $119. I called my local Best Buy (Maple Grove), and it had six of the players in stock at the $119 price. So be sure to call ahead. Also note Don’s reminder that the player doesn’t come with an HDMI cable, so bop on over to Monoprice to order one for about $6 shipped rather than paying $30 and up at Best Buy.

TAKE THE MP3 CHALLENGE!
Can you tell the difference between MP3s and the original CD?

I wonder where the few remaining HD DVD fans will move the goalposts to now ;)

Seriously, this holiday season we will see name brand/quality players priced under $200 regularly.

After seeing UP, this past weekend, I can’t wait to get my hands on another stellar Pixar release.

On another note, it is pretty funny how Don Lindich has changed his tune. He was proclaiming HD DVD the winner up until Toshiba pulled the plug. Wonder how many free players and discs he got from Toshiba and Microsoft? Not saying the BDA did not do the same, but it was pretty funny how many of the tech beat-writers were pro HD DVD.

Oh well the better format won and now we have the best video with the best audio since Blu has the space and bandwidth for BOTH.

Best Blus to get with your new player:
Any Pixar release, Kung Fu Panda, Band of Brothers, The Dark Knight, King Kong (threatrical and extended cut on one 50GB disc with dts-Master Audio), Transformers(pure eye and ear candy), Iron Man, Nightmare Before Christmas, Blade Runner… this list could go on and on…

Can’t wait for Ghostbuster and Dr. Stranglove, hitting Blu on June 16th.

Anyone who tells you Blu is struggling has an agenda. Long live physical media where the end control is fully in the hands of the user.

Does anyone here use something of the Insignia brand? I guess I am curious of the quality of these electronics. Thanks.

Situationer: If you check out Don Lindich’s blog, he has several write-ups on Insignia. As I mentioned, it’s Best Buy’s house brand. Most of the products get good reviews. They’re all generally made by known manufacturers. The Blu-ray player, for example, as Don points out, is identical to a Samsung model.
