We here at the Star Tribune are committed to investigative and watchdog reporting. It’s about doing stories that speak up for the voiceless and hold powerful people accountable. You’ll find those stories, updated every day, on this page.
But it’s also about doing more to reach out to all of you for suggestions, big and small, of what we should look into. It can be something the city won’t fix to a company that ripped you off or even an investigation of public corruption.
When you think you’ve been mistreated by the government or a business, or there’s something wrong in your neighborhood, let us know and we’ll give you answers in this blog, in stories on the site and in the newspaper.
Whistleblower will also be a resource for how to file official complaints, find online information, obtain public records and navigate often mystifying bureaucracies. Links that can help you in that process are on the list to the right down the page, and we’ll update them all the time. We want to know what happened with your complaint.
We’ll also be asking you to help solve the problems reported to us, because your collective knowledge is far greater than anything we’ve got in the newsroom. If you have any questions about whistleblower, you can contact me directly at jshiffer@startribune.com or (612) 673-4271.

I very much appreciate the opinions as written previously in this blog, however, I would like to suggest that we are missing a significant component to this discussion. I highly doubt high-income earners, already paying a significant burden to our current tax system, would object to paying “their fair share” if it weren’t for the incredible waste, inefficiency and seeming corruptness of our government.
Our current government (local, state and federal) is set up to increase its strangle-hold on the public as it refuses to consider limiting spending and unnecessary services. Of course, there is always someone who deems each service as necessary - but who will determine when enough is enough? If this matter is not resolved, we will indeed gravitate toward socialism, and ultimately communism. While that concept sounds outlandish, please realize that the government in this country was not set up to take from one group of society and give to another in every aspect of our lives.
Unfortunately, morally fair or not, that is exactly what is going on today.
I would implore all citizens to examine how they intend government to rule their lives. I truly believe the Founding Fathers did not intend for this level of intrusion into citizen’s lives - and therefore we should be working together to focus our government, whether local, state or federal, to work on our behalf, and not against us. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans will be interested in reducing their scope of involvement in our lives as perfectly demonstrated in the past several years. While I do not have a defined solution to our problems, I do ask that we discontinue complaining about who pays more or gets more, and focus on reducing the overall burden government is placing on all or our lives. Take care & best wishes to all!

I only wish the Star Tribune would bring back the ombudsman position so someone would be holding the Strib accountable as well…
