County hopes stimulus brings this building to life

shubert.JPGThe Minnesota Shubert moved to 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue a decade ago, but no one has yet taken the stage, nor have the crowds taken their seats. Instead, it’s a vacant curiosity for the folks waiting for the bus and train or staggering out of the nearby bars. Fundraising for the Shubert has stalled about $5 million short of the $41 million goal, so now the Hennepin County commissioners hope they can finally “give dance a home” with the help of federal stimulus money, my colleague Mary Jane Smetanka reports.

Can someone please tell me why this entry is in the “Whistleblower” column? Who’s blowing the whistle on what?

  2. James Shiffer Says:

Whistleblower has many missions. One of them is alerting people about how government is spending their money. This is one of a half dozen posts I’ve written about the stimulus spending.

IMO, the Schubert is just a money pit. A shell of a building. Needs to be completely rebuilt. Why not just build a new building?

If my math is correct, they have raised $36 million, and need another $5 million. Talk about wasteful spending when the state is running a 4 billion dollar shortfall, and we’re spending money on stuff like this?

We already have three larger theatres downtown. Why do we need another one?

No mention of the Game murals on the side? Shameful!

If we steal bailout (ie agenda) money for this money pit
I promise to make those responsible famous by dragging
their name through every talking head show i can find
and they love blasting some dumb city official. This pit
will never make any money and will forever be just
another welfare case. It’s a better investment to knock
it down, and use the 36m to support some of the other
    art-pits.
