Weekend preview: a showdown at the fast-food drive-through and the limits of small-claims victories

Whistleblower may have been a bit quiet on the blog this week, but that’s only because I’ve been pounding the pavement, notebook in hand. Check out this weekend’s Star Tribune and startribune.com for a story and video about a confrontation at the White Castle that raises questions about who can get a Slyder at midnight and who can’t. Also, learn about why winning in conciliation court is only the start of trying to get your money back.

I’m sure this story is about only motorized vehicles
allowed to use the drive thru.

I tried riding my bike thru a TCF teller window and they
refused to serve me, saying it was for security reasons.

I bet a guy in a car could rob a bank easier than
    someone on foot or bike.

…and why can’t a fast food place serve walk up? Seems
    pretty stupid to me.

PS. If I’m way off base, feel free to remove my comment.

If White Castle and McDonalds are that concerned
about ’safety,’ they need to post a big sign that says
    ‘autos only.’
I think they are discriminating because they think that
people on foot, bike, or other machine will give phony
    prank orders and take off.
This fear is punishing the 99 percent of their customers
that behave themselves. It would be better for businesses to
have a pay-in-advance like the gas stations.

While not getting you late night fast food fix isn’t the worst thing in the world, I’ve been in the same situation on my bike and not getting served. Taco Bell cites ’safety’ reasons too, like someone in a car boxed in is any less vulnerable than a person on foot, bike or scooter. If someone is going to taco-jack me I’d just as soon be on my bike so they can see I have nothing else to give them.

  4. 433 Says:

They’ll serve people on two MOTORIZED wheels, such as me on my scooter, but not a bicycle? Ridiculous.

  5. JTP Says:

Obviously, this is a simple case of SAFETY not discrimination! It’s just another sad example of someone trying to take advantage of a large corporation. When large corporations are forced to award large payouts for frivolous lawsuits, the cost is passed along to other customers by way of increased prices. If this was a case of discrimination, then why was she served previously when she went inside the restaurant? Had this woman been struck by a motor vehicle while going through the drive thru on her scooter, she’d be bringing a lawsuit against White Castle for not protecting her safety. You can’t win with these types of people, they will try to take advantage of the system in some way, shape, or form. It’s very sad that we live in a society that is so lawsuit happy where people are trying to get something for nothing but I guess with our current state of our Obama-Nation (translation abomination) we should expect more of this kind of behavior! Lady, let it go! So what, you were inconvenienced and didn’t get your nightly White Castle fix! For James Eli Shiffer and Whistleblower to agree with her is ridiculous and just encouraging this type of behavior from other people.
