This Election Day, I’m at your service - responding to your complaints and concerns about trouble at the polls. I’ll visit the precincts in question to check out the problem, if possible. I might dispatch another reporter, or at the very least try to contact the election official in charge.
This isn’t about finding your polling place or how to vote. You can get that information at StarTribune.com’s MyVote.
I want to hear about the malfunctions and the trouble spots, which I hope for everyone’s sake are blissfully few. In some cases, I’ll take your report and post it directly to the blog, so voters can get the information as quickly as possible. You can email me, text me at (612) 716-7232 or leave a voicemail at (612) 673-4271. Please be patient, as I may get backed up.
Naturally, some organizations came up with this idea well before I did. And their efforts reflect it. As of 9 p.m. Monday, Our Vote Live, a project of the nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition, had already logged 492 inquiries in its voting query clearinghouse. The majority of those were questions about polling places and registrations. But the site’s easy-to-use database offered some interesting complaints:
Oct. 28, filed under “voter equipment problem.” A Dakota County voter said the touch-screen machine didn’t print out a copy of his ballot. A worker opened the machine, found a problem and gave the voter an absentee ballot as a replacement. The voter didn’t want to fill out an absentee ballot and now worries that he won’t be able to vote Nov. 4.
Oct. 29, filed under “voter intimidation.” “Caller reported that local employer called employees into a meeting and said everyone better vote for McCain, and forcibly handed out lawn signs. Wanted to know who to go to and what next step is to report this.” The caller didn’t say where in Minnesota he or she was calling from, apparently.
Nov. 3, filed under “other problem.” St. Paul “Caller upset that flyer was put in her mailbox. Flyer was from the Community Action Partnership of Ramsey and Washington Counties. Put in mailbox by volunteer - was not sent in mail.”
In Our Vote’s tally, New York was leading the states with nearly 4,700 queries and complaints by 9 p.m. Monday.
National Public Radio has also launched an interactive map with eyewitness reports about voting conditions around the country.
