Monday update

By Michael Russo

About to hop on a plane to Dallas, although the gate next to me is boarding a flight to Puerto Vallarta, so it’s a crapshoot whether the Star Tribune ever sees me again.

Petteri Nummelin is on his way to Dallas, so Shawn Belle is on his way back to Houston. I will update later on today after practice.

We’re trying to work out the Q&A font problem.

Russo -

How frustrating does it have to be to interview the “king of the non-statement”, Doug Risebrough? The fact that you actually wrote a column about everything he didn’t say is pretty impressive.

Why won’t I be surprised when he doesn’t make a deal and we finish the season with the 8th seed?

I’ll tell you the same thing about font problems that I told RandBall:

If you’re composing in MS Word - which is famous for adding its own layer of sludge on top of your words - perhaps try copying into Notepad and pasting from there. That usually cleans some of the Word slime off of your printed thoughts.

…of course, he said he’d told you all of this already, so perhaps it’s another issue entirely…

Hey Mike
I read recently that Mr. Bettman will be in town for the Thur. night game at the X. Could you please ask him this: “How is that Versus TV contract working for the NHL?”

Better yet, ask Bettman what it’ll take for the NHL to ditch that contract, bend over and take what ESPN will give them? Or maybe we’ll get lucky, ESPN will buy Versus and make it into ESPN 3. Of course, then there is the unfortunate off chance the games would get preempted by ‘The Wild World Of Lawn Darts’. I love this game, but its gotta get seen to grow.

What’s wrong with ‘Verses’? It’s channel 68 where I live. I’m watching it right now in fact - Wings vs NY - the announcers we actually just talking about the Wild - promoting tomorrow night’s game - pointing out that the Wild have gathered 9 points resulting from winning shootouts. That’s something to hang your hat on - Go Wild

Smuggla -

The problem with Verses is that it’s Channel 68. Hard core fans are going to search out channel 68, but Joe Six-Pack isn’t going to sit down in front of the tube and flip through 67 channels and all of a sudden want to watch hockey. He’ll find reruns of the “Man Show” on Spike or watch the 1986 World’s Strongest Man competition on ESPN 6 before he gets to hockey (I’ve always been intregued by dislocating kneecaps while carrying appliances). Besides, Verses isn’t even on 100% of the cable packages. If the NHL is going to get fans, they need to improve their brand and the best way to do it is to show games on ESPN - and make the rinks bigger - and no touch icing - bigger nets wouldn’t be a bad thing (I read Bucci earlier tonight) - sending Bettman to PEI for three years.

Smuggs - you rock my world.

FEDS-91 - good post, bad jersey. Go Columbus
