Vokoun traded to Florida/More Manny-Bruins stuff

Posted on June 22nd, 2007 – 3:16 PM
By Michael Russo

Chiarelli on phone. Not with Risebrough. Taking pick.

Mood has changed at the Wild table. Amateur scouts are buried in their lists, and Risebrough and Brian Burke talking right now. Wild has something cooking with Anaheim. Two assistant GM’s talking now.

Forms being signed by both teams right now.

Anaheim has the 16th pick… Risebrough is definitely working on Anaheim. He got off the phone, walked back to Burke. Now Tom Lynn is talking with Burke and assistant GM Dave McNab. Now Lynn and McNab are up at NHL Central Registry.

Colton Gillies, the nephew of Clark Gillies, is the Wild’s pick after trading 19th and 42nd to Anaheim. Update, I just talked to my Bruins source. He said there’s “a lot of talking” between the teams right now. He acknowledged that things got delayed “because there were two other attractive goalies out there. Now, our options are limited.”

But he also said there’s bigtime concern in the Bruins because of Fernandez’s off the ice persona. He basically asked me for a scouting report of Fernandez, and we’re not talking on the ice.

He said there’s still a good chance. He acknowledged the Wild wants to see who’s left at No. 8. He also said the Wild would not have to take Glen Murray: “We need goal scoring as much as anybody in the league.”

I believe it’s PJ Axelsson coming to the Wild if this happens. Boston writer’s hearing the Wild would get a second, too, if this deal occurs.

I hear Phoenix has flipped picks for the No. 1 overall pick and will take Kyle Turris, incidentally.

Although my Blackhawks source just told me 90 percent they take the pick. So who knows?

OK, Panthers took complete about-face and acquired Tomas Vokoun from Nashville for a first and two seconds. Will be announced in 45 minutes, but got it from great sources.

Wild was under impression the Panthers wouldn’t spend money on a goalie, but Vokoun’s got a $5.7 million cap hit. Meaning? They just had no interest in Manny.

This suddenly hurts Risebrough bargaining position for Manny, in my opinion. Vokoun’s a stud.
I know I’m giving you way more Florida news than Minny, but I covered the Panthers for 10 years…Nathan Horton deal was rejected by NHL for a bad no-trade clause…It’d be funny if they trade him now, but they won’t…They’ll give him a new contract offer by day’s end.

That’s good for us. Boston and Phoenix are running out of options.

Congrats, Russo, if you have the story right. You have it before TSN, hockeybuzz or nhl.com…Good work!

Nashville salary purge continues…sale of the club is in question, with Preds asking for one of Balsillie’s lawyers to be removed from the talks. It’s too bad that an organization that did such a nice job of building a good team now seems as if it’s falling apart.

Probably wasn’t a market where hockey was going to make it, no matter what they did.

Russo - you’re the stud (as long as this deal is made).

Not sure how 1 fewer goalie who was rumored to be available hurts Riser’s position. Doesn’t this mean Manny is the best available now (referring to earlier post)?

And hockeybuzz never scoops anything. Beating Ek isn’t surprising… wouldn’t be surprised to see Ek claiming exclusive info on this one.

“And hockeybuzz never scoops anything. Beating Ek isn’t surprising… wouldn’t be surprised to see Ek claiming exclusive info on this one.”

He is. He’s a hack.

I would agree w/ mnfan, this goes down to two teams wanting the same player, (if you beleive what we’re reading).

I’m starting to read things about the Great One wanting to move up to #1 to get Turris. Smoke screen to get DR nervous?

Man, I’m not getting anything done today…

Ryan P. says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Well there’s still Bryzgalov. Not that he’s better than Manny, but he’s still an option

ballgame says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Pull the trigger Risebrough and get this done. I can easily see this not happening and we’re stuck with Manny tonight and perhaps longer.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Well, Russo said it hours ago - when you hold out for maximum value, there’s a chance you get burned and come away with nothing. And we probably shouldn’t be surprised if Risebrough declines to pull the trigger today, especially if McDonagh is gone before the Bruins draft at #8. Still, with two viable goalies left and two interested teams (Boston/Phoenix,) I’ve gotta believe something will get done.

ballgame says:

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:19 pm

The other thing Russo said this morning was that there’s no way DR pulls the trigger with Boston until he sees who’s available at #8, so we can probably forget anything happening before 6pm…

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:20 pm

I’m pretty sure they won’t get stuck with Manny..some team has a skater making similar money to Manny that they wan’t to get rid of. Just saying I don’t think there is any risk to asking for a lot when the fallback is to just deal Manny for whatever even if it’s not much.

Ryan P. says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:28 pm

No way we settle for some guy that has a similar contract.

If Toskala and Voukoun can garner such high picks (1st 2nd and 4th, 1st 2nd and 2nd), we should at least expect a 1st and a 4th… probably more since there are less options.

Charlie says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Never say never, but I don’t see DR sitting on his can with this one. He fully understands the need to get Manny’s $4.35m off of the books.

Does anyone know for sure what the cap is this upcoming year? They were speculating that it would be between $48-$49m, however I’ve heard that it might go up to $52m because of the record revenue this past season. Anyone heard definitivly?

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Yeah, I think the Wild should get more. Just that the worst case scenerio is getting someone like say Derek Morris which ain’t too bad. So DR might as well ask for a good return now and if it fails he can just dump Manny.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:33 pm

It still hasn’t been announced, but most of the media seem to have been saying that the safe bet is between $48 and $50 mil, and that the $52m reports were a bit optimistic.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:36 pm

The only thing that hurts Risebrough is Risebrough. He’s a na’er-do-well.

Golly, I wonder if I’ll get an e-mail from an assitant editor about blogging in with the term “na’er-do-well”….

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:38 pm

Only if the assistant editor has spellcheck. It’s “ne’er-do-well.”

Jon says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:39 pm

“Well there’s still Bryzgalov. Not that he’s better than Manny, but he’s still an option”

He’s not better than Manny? That homer-flavored crack you are smoking must be powerful. You’re talking about the guy who has one of the longest playoff shutout streaks, who won three games against the goalie you are replacing Manny with. . . never mind, you won’t be convinced.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Why, thnak yuo Sam, I eppraciete your halp on thet pertikuler piont.

Charlie says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Mike, you get bonus points for that one.

People may have a negative opinion regarding DR because of his cautiousness, but I’d rather have a GM who doesn’t make a move- just to make a move. Think of where this team would be if we had some cowboy GM blazing his six-guns every off season. My guess is that we would not have been in the playoffs last year and straddled with a slue of overpriced, old has-been’s.

Regardless of what some people think, this franchise is in great condition and looks to be ready to get to the next level of play…in my humble opinion.

pantsboyusa says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 pm

i heard the $52 mil number comes from a clause in the CBA that if the NHL made a certain amount of money, then the NHLPA could invoke said clause and give the salary cap a 5% - 10% boost. kicking the number up to $52 mil. and that the NHL may have hit that threshold this year.

Ryan P. says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:49 pm

I live in Orange County and have seen a lot of Ducks games (unfortunately it’s my only source of hockey). If Bryzgalov was a top tier goalie, he’d have gone before Vesa since he’s younger or the Ducks would have let Giguere go.

I’m not one of the Wild fans who thinks that Manny is a top 5 goalie, but I definitely think he’s better than Bryzgalov. Manny has a better career save percentage by the way.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:53 pm

Your humble opinion is right according to my humble opinion Charlie! It takes time, for all of the A.D.D. kids out there realize maybe hockey is different then most sports and that is what makes it better then most sports. Big names can stay with teams for a number of years if they and the team is loyal, case in point is Detroit, Colorado, New Jersey, and so on and so on… Teams cannot be thrown together in the NHL chemistry and hard work is a big part of a champion! The Wild are building both and are doing it the right way, not the sign big players and hope just to pull the plug and start over 2 yrs later!

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:53 pm

No doubt that Risebrough’s under pressure to get Manny’s contract off the books. Bob Naegele wants to use that money to buy a new boat.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:57 pm

“Think of where this team would be if we had some cowboy GM blazing his six-guns every off season.”

Oh, that’s an easy one. We’d be the Flyers.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Okay, that sounded overly bitter. Sorry. I grew up a Flyers fan, and spent most of my teens and 20s watching Bobby Clarke ruin the franchise with his stubborn, pigheaded moves. But it’s a bit like listening to a Red Sox fan complain, since the Flyers make the playoffs almost every year. Srry about that…

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Noah, you’re right. Adding a player the calibre of Drury, Smyth, Gomez, or Souray would be SO WRONG!! It would ruin the Mild’s “also-ran” chemistry!

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Mike, your comments make no sense. Grow up, if you want to be negative then find some thing legitimate. Bob Naegele needs a new boat, is that your insight, really?! If you think the Wild are just trying to make a buck then why the heck did they end the season so close to the salary cap?

Charlie says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Mike, Do you know if that was Bob Naegele’s boat that burned on the St. Croix last week? Drunken lunatics….

God, I’m going nuts here. I’m going to the Dubliner…Good luck everyone.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:06 pm

what is any of those players going to do right now? We need strength. Let Gabby, Demitra, Rolston, Koivu and Bouchard make the offense. We need power defense such as Pronger with Anahiem or Chara. We wont get that but we need to look for it.

If you want to be negative go join the cry babies on the vikings blogs. The wild are winning and improving. Get your a.d.d. pills and settle down. Even if the Wild don’t move Manny tonight during the season some one always wants a goalie and is always willing to pay big. Settle down and give it time!

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:09 pm

I meant we wont get either of them, Pronger or Chara.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:12 pm

Actually, Noah, Gomez and Drury would plug arguably the Wild’s biggest hole - a big physical center who can create room for our speed and finesse guys in the offensive zone. The need for a big center has been well-documented, but isn’t that the whole point of trading Manny - to clear enough cap space to go after some of the better free agents? (Mike’s screed about the Wild’s cheapness rings a bit hollow, since the team bumped right up against the salary cap last season and clearly intends on doing so again.)

It is true that Minnesota doesn’t pop up on TSN or Fourth Period’s list of teams known to be interested in Gomez and Drury, but I would chalk that up to a) the Wild being one of those teams that the coastal media generally ignore until they make a move, and b) Risebrough being a GM famous for never tipping his hand.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Um, Russo, I know you’re busy, but what’s a “bad no-trade clause”?

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:17 pm

I think they were so close to the cap because they spent alot of money on some really crummy players. Prior to that they were never close to the cap. Last year they got closer to the cap because they brought in some ham & eggers like Kim Johnsson, for instance, who were completely HORRIBLE. Last year they spent money becasue they didn’t need a rocket scientist to tell them if they didn’t get close to the cap then the fans would be unhappy.

Let’s be honest, what has Pavol Demitra ever accomplished other than never play a full season? Gaborik too. What sense does it make to throw a ton of money and build a team around a guy who’s never, ever, played a full season since he’s been in the league (Gaborik & Demitra).

So last year, they made their little playoff appearance, got completely destroyed and outclassed while doing it, and now I believe the Mild management will go back to their cheap ways, figuring now that the fans got their little playoff fix; that there’s no need to spend money smartly and try to rush back to the playoffs anytime soon.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:19 pm

Since when is Drury a big guy? 5′10″ 202 lbs, that isn’t very big. He is a speed guy similiar to Bouchard, just older wiser and at this point much better. Gomez 5′ 11″ 200 lbs, where is are these guys big? White is 5′ 10″ 194 lbs, get your facts right. Gomez is physical and Drury will play his heart out, don’t get me wrong I would love to see them both in a Wild jersey but that is not going to solve the Wild’s issues.

I do agree though, they need to be bigger and they need the cap room for that reason!

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Sam, neither Gomez nor Drury are “big and physical”. Drury is 5′10″ and Gomez I think is 5′11″ at the most. They are not big and physical, but they are the most skilled centers available (who both can actually WIN a faceoff) and though the Wild desperately need a No. 1 center (Didn’t both Demitra and Rolston get moved to the wing for most of the season?), I think these guys will be way too costly. 6 million at least, and probably will get long term offers elsewhere.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:26 pm

Okay, I should know better than to engage Mike, but there’s still ten minutes ’til VS kicks off their draft coverage, so…

1) Johnsson was a quality player in Philly, and it was a perfectly reasonable signing, if not a franchise-changing one. You can debate the size of the contract, but that was the market he was commanding at the time. Obviously, everyone wishes he had played better last year, but GMs don’t come equipped with crystal balls.

2) You don’t think the Demitra trade was a good one? I… but… okay, I’m almost speechless. He had 25 G, 39 A, and provided Gaborik with the first reliable partner he’d ever had. Furthermore, the deal Risebrough pulled off to get him was widely considered to be the steal of the 2006 draft.

3) “Destroyed” by the Ducks in the playoffs? They sure were. So was everyone else who played Anaheim after early April. There is a middle ground between sucking and winning it all. Only one team wins the Cup. A GM’s job is to get his team to the playoffs with a chance to compete. Last year, Risebrough did that.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:27 pm

I will give you Johnsson, he didn’t play well but, he was brought in for puck movement.

There is no way you can tell me you were not excited for the playoffs last year, if you weren’t you wouldn’t be here. They were not completely out classed just out manned. Not only that but the league went back to not calling a lot of stuff in the playoffs, but they let that series get out of control and that was bad for the Wild. Those calls are why the Wild did so well in the regular season, its no excuse and that is why they need to get bigger!

Mike you don’t seem to care so much about hockey as you do how much money they are making. If we brought in Jagr would that make you happy? Its not how much you spend its getting the right players. Johnsson did not play well and neither did a few others but, Demitra, Backstrom, and Parrish all made a huge impact on our team and were all great pickups! Every team has busts no team is perfect. Gabby is training differently and working with specialists so he doesn’t have to miss the first half of every season like he has every year so far. Hopefully it helps but, are you saying we should get rid of Gabby and Demitra? You are crazy!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:28 pm

Okay, “big” was a stretch. But they are both good physical centers. That’s all I meant. And I don’t see any reason why the Wild shouldn’t be able to clear enough cap room to go after one of them.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:28 pm

Not having a playmaking center, who can win draws, and who can score too (that’s a novel idea) is a HUGE issue for the Mild. All Chris Drury has done is excel at every level of hockey he’s ever played at. Naw,….we don’t need a guy like that! Bring back Todd (Mary) White!!

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:33 pm

Mike, first of all Anaheim completely destroyed EVERYONE in the playoffs, “outclassed” however implies that the Ducks organization actually has class, which I find dubious.

Johnsson was DEFINITELY a huge disappointment last season, I agree with you there. Nummelin too was a waste (team worst plus/minus rating).

Demitra has played 82 games more than once and Gaborik has played a full season at least once, I’m pretty sure that “never, ever” doesn’t really fit the situation.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:33 pm

How far did Demitra take the Blues? Or the Kings? Or the Mild last year? Has he ever been past the first round? I’m not saying that Demitra’s a bad player but the Mild need more and better than Demitra if they are serious about a Cup run. I’m convinced they’re not serious about winning a Stanley Cup. Bottom line.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Per Russo’s late update, it’s a relief to see that Boston won’t insist on Glen Murray being part of a Fernandez deal. Holding my breath that those scared of Manny’s temper don’t win the day for the Bruins…

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Glen Murray’s a scorer. The Mild could use a guy like Murray.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:41 pm

Am I understanding Russo right? The deal would be Fernandez for Boston’s #1?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Yeah, but you’re the one saying they need a top flight guy like Gomez or Drury. Murray’s 34, his stats are comparable to Demitra’s, and he makes over $4m. That kind of salary wouldn’t leave much for going after free agents.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:44 pm

The deal, as Russo’s been reporting it, would be Manny and our #19 pick in the first for Boston’s #8 pick in the first and PJ Axelsson.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:47 pm

So, Mike, I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve decided to construct a mental image of you for my own amusement. I’m going with Randy Quaid in “Major League 2,” where he plays the Indians’ fan who turns against the team and spends the season shrieking from the cheap seats that they suck, regardless of how many games they win.

Unless you have a better suggestion…

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:49 pm

If that’s the trade the Risebrough’s a bigger idiot than I thought. PJ Axelsson stinks. So it’s basically Manny and a first for Boston’s #1 and no legitimate help for 2007-2008.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:50 pm

What is Axelsson making? this isn’t a very deep draft but, I would welcome the cap relief.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:52 pm

Axelsson makes $1.85m, locked in for two more years. He’s not a star, but he’s as good as several of our existing forwards, any of whom could be jettisoned to make room.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:53 pm

First of all, I’m much better looking than Randy Quaid….that dude is hard to look at!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:53 pm

And Mike, for the umpteenth time, the idea is to get rid of an extra goalie who makes too much money and clear plenty of cap space for free agency, not to get Zdeno Chara out of Boston.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:54 pm

Dude go away, I am sick of reading your negativity! There is still a bunch of time before the season starts and the help wasn’t neccesarily going to come from the trade but, the relief in the cap and a higher draft pick would be nice. Plenty of time to look for deals, player can see where we are going and we are much more intising then we were a year ago. We used to be all about defense and that change big time last year, the players are more likely to sign here now that they can see we play more of a wide open game.

rossetti_stunner says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:54 pm

Axelsson is considered Mr. Congeniality in Sweden

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Yeah after watching the playoffs and Pronger I am pretty sure they can see the benefit in keeping a guy like Chara and it would cost us big to get him.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pm

One doesn’t need to trade for a guy like Axelsson. There will be plenty of shlubbs like Axelsson available in the free-agent pool. Axelsson is a 3rd line, 4th line roster filler at best, and he’s awful defensively.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Oh, thank God! VS is running with TSN’s coverage of the draft. I was afraid I was gonna have to spend the next three hours listening to Bill Clement and Keith Jones…

What the Florida reporter said.

A New Goalie

Tomas The Panthers have apparently swung a deal to grab Nashville All-Star Tomas Vokoun.

Still wading through the rumors, but this can’t be anything but good for the Panthers. The big price was next year’s first round pick, but whatever.

You lose Roberto, you gain Vokoun. Not too shabby.

Sure, the price was steep, but it was the right move to make. You have to think JM did quite a nice job with this one. He didn’t panic, stayed cool throughout the deal — and didn’t get desperate and go to Minnesota for Manny Fernandez.

As always, post your comments below. As bad as last year’s draft was for the Panthers, this one suddenly just perked up.

Here’s what the Cats give up: A first round pick in 2008; a second round pick tomorrow and a secondary second-round pick either tomorrow or in 2008. Vokoun is signed for the next four seasons, making $5.5 million in 2007-08 with an escalating contract that maxes at $6.3 mil in 2010-11.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Wow! McKenzie says Balsillie’s been blocked again, and the Pred relocation to Hamilton is off! If this is true, it’s another victory for Gary “F**k Canada” Bettman…

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Sam I like your take on Mike!! I think you are about right on. I missed it after you wrote it but, good one man!

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Canada is good for hockey and they should have more teams. If the NHL wants to make a come back they need Canada! You heard it right, I heard it the same. Sounds like people from Kansas City are there, whoop-d-dooo! Another city that probably cannot keep hockey thriving with out multiple championships early!

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Sam, if the idea is to dump salary then why not just trade Manny and the #1 for the B’s #1? Wouldn’t that make more sense that if the primary objective is to dump Manny’s salary? Why take on stinky Axelsson’s (almost $2 mill) salary? They need to get something better than just a swap of picks and a something better then Axelsson. Gawd, I hope Russo’s wrong on this one.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Canada is good for hockey and they should have more teams. If the NHL wants to make a come back they need Canada! You heard it right, I heard it the same. Sounds like people from Kansas City are there, whoop-d-dooo! I am not big on the southern expansion teams, they don’t even know what snow and ice is, why would hockey thrive there?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Mike, I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the B’s also have cap concerns, and wouldn’t be willing to take on Fernandez’s salary without dumping some in return. And I don’t think Axelsson is as bad as you make him out to be. He’s no star, like he can play a role.

On another note, good to hear Bettman getting roundly booed from start to finish. Way to go, Columbus!

ballgame says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Mike - Never thought I’d say this, but

WE AGREE!!!

O.K., I just took a deep breath & am still wondering whether to press the submit button.

Axelsson is dead weight - package the #19 pick with Manny for the #8 and the Bruin’s second or third round pick.

Hmmm… Might as well.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Oh, and I just now noticed that Russo’s latest update has the Wild get a second rounder as well as the #8 and Axelsson…

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Okay, moment of truth! McDonagh’s still on the board (barely,) so if nothing happens here, gotta assume Boston got cold feet.

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:04 pm

So RD there at #8…time for DR to pull the trigger on a deal.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I am right there with you Sam, this is it. If it doesn’t happen here it could be a while.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Well, shit.

Russo, what happened?!

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Looks like no deal..unless they grabbing a player to deal later on.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:09 pm

No trade today boys!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:12 pm

That’s a weird pick, too, eh? Hamill doesn’t seem to fill any particularly glaring need on Boston, so you have to figure they took him because he was the best player on their board, which doesn’t square with what all the rankings said…

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:12 pm

No surprise to me that Risebutt couldn’t swing a decent deal.

Unless DR has some thing else up his sleeve we may be waiting until the season starts to see Manny leaving. He is a good goaling and I can’t blame them for wanting to get some thing for him. It would have been nice to see them move him to free up some space though.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:15 pm

have you started crying yet Mike?

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Oh wait you have been all day long!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:16 pm

The only other possibility that occurs to me is that Risebrough thinks he can make a better deal with Phoenix after the draft. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:19 pm

There is still time to swing a deal before the season starts. The Wild have never gone after the biggest names in free agency and for the most part I cannot blame them. They could be waiting until mid season when some one is desperate for a goalie and will give a lot for Manny.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:20 pm

We still have a very good nucleaus and it will take us to the playoffs again next year. A big mid season trade could be what puts us over the top.

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Phoenix has the 21st pick too. Maybe they are not done talking?

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:22 pm

That’s too bad, seems to me if DR doesn’t make a deal at the draft, which looks unlikely, I think it’s more likely that Manny doesn’t get traded until midseason. That will suck for Harding.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Russo says Wild are signing forms with Anaheim, which owns the 16th pick! This obviously can’t be a Fernandez trade, but clearly an attempt to move up…

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:26 pm

Gotta wonder what’s up DR’s sleeve making a potential deal with the Ducks. I can’t think of anything that would make sense that we could offer them.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:26 pm

Huh, I wonder what that could be. Some one did say DR never tips his hand and I still remember last year.

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:26 pm

Trading with the hated Ducks?

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Ooooo….the big move up from #19 to #16….I can hardly wait!

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Noah, this horse-bleep franchise isn’t worth spilling tears over.

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:29 pm

The only thing I can surmise with whatever deal has been made is perhaps DR is sending 19 and a player(s) for 16 and perhaps an additional pick?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:30 pm

I wonder if it could be some sort of three-way deal. Or it could be as simple as Risebrough believing that McDonagh’s still gonna be there at 16, but not 19. Oh well, we’ll find out soon.

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Maybe we traded for Brad May.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Then quite chirping your mouth and get out of here. You know what yap all you want people like you are just out to get a rise and I am only feeding you! You shouldn’t be talking your too dumb and I am just going to ignore your stupidity!

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Hey Mike, shut the eff up. From what I have seen you have done nothing but whine and complain. If you were any kind of true hockey fan, you would understand that the NHL draft is the most difficult draft to predict as far as where talent will be found. And as far as the job Doug Risbrough has done, it is difficult to argue with the way the team has developed under his watch. Give him credit for coming up with a plan over the years and sticking to it. Personally I’m fired up to see how the team develops this coming year.

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Mike is taunting you, ignore him.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

So much for that.

Denny says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

McDonagh’s gone.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:35 pm

There goes Mcdonagh!

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Trading for 16 to try and snag McDounagh wouldn’t have made sense until after the 15th pick was announced. There is something else afoot.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Seriously, guys, you just gotta learn to live with Mike. Think of him as your own personal episode of Debbie Downer…

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Good to see Bob again! I still bleed North Star Green, emphasis on the North. I have to say the Wild have almost made me forget, almost.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:42 pm

And I still say screw Norm!

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Preach on noah!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Wow! If the Wild are getting the 16 pick, this means that Cherepanov, Esposito, or both might still be on the board! Either would be a major steal!

Murray says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Take the Russian if he’s there..take a gamble and see what happens.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:46 pm

I used to have a shirt that had a hockey glove with the middle finger up on it. Over the glove it said “MN salutes Norm Green” I love that shirt!

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

I think that is a tough choice to take a forward if a top D-man is sittig there. I wonder if the Wild mentality is of the “take the best player available” style or the “draft for need”

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Ordinarily, I’d say draft for need, but Cherepanov has a chance to be another Malkin, and the Wild have been willing to go Euro in the past.

Of course, who knows if we even have the pick?

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:52 pm

I still want to know what DR was signing with the Ducks, we still don’t know if we have the 16th or not. If he plays it the way he did last year we are not getting another pick we are unloading one.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:52 pm

I hear booing - must be Bettman with the trade…

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Here it is!

Denny says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Wild moves up!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Wow - straight-up pick trade! DR must know what he wants…

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:54 pm

I forgot about 42. Hopefully we can parlay the freebie curtesy of Thielen into something productive.

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:57 pm

Giles?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:58 pm

Hmmm. I have no idea what to think. There must have been an assumption that Gilles was about to get nabbed at 17 or 18.

yawn. anyone else feeling sleepy?

Kyle says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:58 pm

………limited offensive ability? That is the type of player you can pick up later in the draft. This feels like a wasted pick to me.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 7:59 pm

they got big I don’t know much about him but they said he is a big forchecker and that is what we wanted all year last year.

Denny says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:01 pm

And rated one of the top two fastest skaters this year, correct?

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Great forchecker on his bio and ability to land big hits. I can live with it but it sure seemed tempting to take one of the two big names still there. His favorite team is the Canucks, that will have to change egh?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Yeah, he is. Central scouting says he’s “a power forward with great size… out muscles his opponents and has the ability to
land punishing hits… has great speed and is very consistent… uses his reach to his advantage and is good on the penalty kill… needs to get better around the net and at times needs to improve his positioning.”

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Great, another speedy center who can’t make plays and can’t score. Just what we needed.

Did you see all that Mild brass up there grinning like a bunch of baboons?

Can we somehow get a real NHL team in Minneapolis? St. Paul can have theirs.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Yup great speed, and great hitting. Patterns his game after Iginla, obviously he isn’t quite that now but we will have to see. It says he is a hard worker and the wild have never done what they ’should’ do and to be honest I like the fact that they stick to there guns!

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:05 pm

WTF.

I don’t understand this.

noah says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Ok all but one and he was trying to get on my nerves. Some people just suck, oh well!

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Russo needs to work on his liveblogging skills.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:12 pm

No question Risebrough has some explaining to do on this one.

Petey says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Can this guy win faceoffs?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Russo’s not live-blogging, DP. He’s covering the draft. He’s probably frantically writing up his story for tomorrow’s paper and interviewing Wild brass…

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:13 pm

The Mild aren’t interested in playmakers and scorers, Wallshot. Where have you been?

ascoteton says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

maybe they try convert this guy to defense? who knows…

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

Anyone who watched us flounder against the Ducks in the playoffs should understand this pick - right or wrong.

Anyone who has said that they wished we were tougher should understand this pick.

Anyone who thought we had too many Euros but not enough North Americans in our game should understand this pick.

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Oh yes, and Gillies was a -20 with 148 penalty minutes. Great resume. Way to throwaway this draft guys.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Sam, the only explanation Risedump can put forward isn’t that he hasn’t a clue.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

I agree, Nick, in principle, but he’s 18 years old, and the Wild have a rep for bringing their prospects along slowly. He won’t be able to help for a couple of years at least, and I had the impression that MN was more interested in addressing their lack of size at center through free agency. But I guess they still can, assuming they eventually find someone to take Manny. (Boston could still be in play, I suppose, although without the picks, Phoenix seems more likely to me.)

Denny says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

NickinNY: Right on.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

…and if he can’t play defense then maybe run the Zamboni?

sauzatime says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:21 pm

The genius of Mike at work…a team he loving refers to as the Mild select one of the highest rated players (that was still available) with size, physicality and speed…and he mocks them for not taking scoring.

I’m siding with all of the hockey knowledge at the Wild’s table over anything Mikey says.

Nick in New York…well said.

DP says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:21 pm

On Cherepanov:”The lack of a transfer agreement with Russia was a worry for many teams, as was a poor work ethic. He is tremendously inconsistent, maddeningly frustrating and a player who only turns it on when he feels like it.”

Doesn’t sound like a DR/JL type of player, probably why they passed.

And if Russo’s not liveblogging he should be, c’mon he’s got a few more hours ’til deadline, a little read meat to the die hards is all I’m asking for!

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:21 pm

+/- is a useless stat in juniors, by the way. (It’s pretty useless in the NHL, too, actually.)

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Sam: I agree he’s a couple years away. But I think we’ve been about 50:50 for bringing our guys along slowly. I think PMB could have used another year in junior/AHL, for example. Foster? Maybe brought him in too soon.

I think they give jobs to guys that earn them, and then make them continue earning them every day. I have no problem with that.

I would have been okay with Esposito. But when you start talking about Russians with motivation issues I can’t help but think of two words: Yashin and Zherdev.

We have all been talking about how soft this team is, and how small they are. There aren’t too many 18 year olds that go in the bottom half of the first round that DON’T get better offensively over the next couple years. I have no problem with Gillies being any different.

it should also be said that the other pick we sent to Anaheim was the Thelen reciprocal pick I believe.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Apparently, Fernandez has zero trade value at this point.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Actually, Scott, I was just looking at a bunch of mock drafts, and a surprising number of them had Anaheim taking Gillies with that 16th pick! I have no idea what it means, if anything. Obviously, either Anaheim didn’t want him, or they didn’t think that’s where Risebough was going.

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Nick, I certainly hope he DOES get better offensively in the next couple of years because if he doesn’t, he will never play in the NHL. Unless he learns how to fight. :-D
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t WANT the Wild to fail, and maybe this will turn out well in the long run, but it seems like a longshot.

scott says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:31 pm

i don’t think we will know until a few years have passed and we see how Gillies does v. Esposito and Cherepanov

Outside of Thielen I don’t think we have ever really blown a pick

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Mike: I’m holding out hope that we trade for Boston’s 30th overall and a player like Axelsson or Sturm for Manny.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:33 pm

This from Allan Muir, CNN/SI’s hockey guru:

And it’s Gillies. Have to think that the Ducks success weighed heavily into this decision. I compared him to Travis Moen in another article, and that makes me think this pick is completely crazy. Size and speed are highly desirable qualities, but his hands are stone. You can find guys like this later on. I think the Wild will rue the day they called his name with Cherepanov on the board.

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Axelsson? Would would we want him? He was mediocre in his prime, and seems to be past that now.

Aaron says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:33 pm

It sounds like he is a brilliant skater with size. I always believe that a player can get better handling and shooting the puck. However, I have never really seen a player suddenly develop great skating ability and size.

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:35 pm

I didn’t say we did want him. But the rumor mill has his name all over the place in our talks for Manny.

I’d rather have Sturm.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:36 pm

At this point I wouldn’t have any faith in Risebozo’s ability to hail a cab to get out of Columbus.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:39 pm

I’d rather have Sturm any day but he’s got good offensive skills and that’s a bad fit for the Mild!

FEDS-91 says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:40 pm

And anyone would care about your faith because…?

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Sturm is a very solid player, but I don’t think trading for another winger is going to help them right now. His name was never mentioned in trade talks anyway.

As far as Manny being traded at this point today? Not going to happen.

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Mike: get over yourself. Your sophomoric insults are boring. We know your position on the team and organization. There’s a difference between dissent and being a donkey.

If you want to aruge against the pick or the way the team is run, then bring something of substance.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:43 pm

For the same reason anybody would care about what you have to say FEDS?

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:43 pm

Sturm would be fine, but Phoenix has the #30 pick, not Boston. The Bruins have no more 1st round picks.

On another note, you gotta feel for the Preds GM. That had to be one of the tougher interviews he’s given.

Nick in New York says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Oops…mea culpa Sam…you’re 100% right.

Sooo…Derek Morris??

DP says:

Time will tell Mike, but in the meantime it seems like this is the excuse you’ve been looking for to bail. I hear Nashville is really hurting for fans and I know you are a huge David Poile fan. They did so well in the playoffs!!

Difference is, I don’t whine and cry incessantly there chuckles. You’ve not once brought anything worthwhile to the discussion.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Heh. Nah, I’m with Wallshot. It’s not happening tonight. We’ve just gotta hope someone wants a goalie badly enough to give up a decent defenseman or solid center for him, and if not, it’ll probably be an awkward first half of the season…

sauzatime says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Btw…to TSN had Gillies rated as their 18th overall prospect. This pick just isn’t that off the wall. From ISS:

Gillies will be a player that teams can be assured of playing in the league for a long time. The number one attraction for this player is his combination of outstanding size and skill. He’s not a flashy offensive player, but has shown increased confidence with the puck as the year went on. Unproven offensive production is a concern however with his solid overall package, he continues to be a favorite of ISS.

FEDS-91 says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Keep in mind guys, our pick doesn’t necessarily need to be a 1st rounder from this year.

FEDS-91 says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:49 pm

…or pick(S)

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

I see a trade with Pheonix for their 30th pick and a player for Manny.

Wallshot says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

That is a good point, FEDS, and would probably be smarter for the Wild - since this has been said to be a weak class anyway. We’ll see though.

Sam says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Um, Mike? Was that… an actual contribution to the discussion? … you feeling okay, buddy?

Gabby needs to stay healthy or anything we do this offseason means nothing.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Now there’s an organization that know’s what it is doing, San Jose.

Willi Plett says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Not a lame pick by the Wild, but he, like Mikko Koivu, will need 2-3 seasons before he’s ready. A big, physical player who can skate? They’re few and far between. Some of that positioning/feel for the puck comes with experience, and Gillies is only 18. He was out of place as a center last season which led to some bad stats. But he could be a nice, big physical wing - something the Wild need if they’re going to go farther in the playoffs than the first round. I’m giving some credit to Dougie for foresight, which has been the way the Wild have been run since their inception - it’s never been about the here and now but about the present and future. Being a hard worker is a plus; that’s why I can understand them passing on Cheraponov - the guy doesn’t care about the game, and that’s what the Wild already got with Thielen. Too bad - he could have been a great d-man (and still could), but he needs to get his head straightened out. The Wild don’t go for guys like that, which is why they took Gillies. Props to Dougie.

Mike says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 9:14 pm

In 2-4 years we can honestly gauge how good this draft was. I like the kids size, speed and checking ability.

Nick says:

June 22nd, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Alright…another deal. The Ducks drop down to 19 (and add 42) and give 16 to the Wild. After watching them get manhandled by the Ducks, the word is that they want some size and strength. Colton Gillies, maybe? Or will someone finally pull the trigger on the sliders?

***

Halfway through the draft, looks like everyone who took the over on the Columbus hospitality remarks will collect, but there haven’t been many shout outs to the Ducks.

***

And it’s Gillies. Have to think that the Ducks success weighed heavily into this decision. I compared him to Travis Moen in another article, and that makes me think this pick is completely crazy. Size and speed are highly desirable qualities, but his hands are stone. You can find guys like this later on. I think the Wild will rue the day they called his name with Cherepanov on the board.

***

Man, I was starting to think I was the only one who had a mancrush on Cherepanov, but the Rangers finally grabbed him. What a value pick for New York at this point. The kid broke Pavel Bure’s rookie goal-scoring record in the RSL, and outscored Malkin, Kovalchuk and Ovechkin, so clearly he’s a high end talent. More I think of it, it could be a nice break for the league that he ends up there. The NHL needs exciting players in major markets, and Cherepanov is that. He’ll be with Omsk in Russia next season, but he’s got the tools to grab a spot in New York as soon as 2008-09.

becky says:

sauzatime–welcome back, it’s been awhile! DR is methodical, does his homework and knows what he’s doing even if it’s not obvious to all of us. And remeber who the coach is. DR knows what Jacques can and does do. Remember that a lot of coaches have historically not wanted to take on our players because they figured Jacques had brought them to their full potential and there was probably nothing more than anyone else could do.

Maybe there’s a reason Manny isn’t gone yet — maybe we will need HIM next year. The RFA contracts and pursuit of UFAs ought to be interesting given no two articles I’ve read seem to clearly and consistently define what position the Wild wants to fill.

Guess I’ll have to continue to get Center Ice so I can see the Eastern teams — Cherpanov, eh??

Gomez to Edmonton? Well, I will say it’s closer to home having spent a lot of time in Anchorage thanks to my own family. Night life? Not so much.
