Update from Regina

Photog Carlos Gonzalez and I walk into a local restaurant, Earls (a Canadian staple, in my opinion), tonight. As we’re waiting for a table, who comes running up to me from behind but Wild “Goalie of the Future” Josh Harding.

He was out with his family celebrating his new contract. We chatted for a few minutes, and I said to my colleague, “That’s why I cover hockey. What other athlete comes running up to the beat writer?”

Good dudes, those hockey players.

Speaking of which, Carlos and I attended Derek and Aaron Boogaard’s boxing training tonight at Lonsdale Boxing Club.

Let me tell you, I couldn’t imagine taking a punch from either.

The roughly two-hour training was intense. The entire 6,500 square-foot building literally shook as Derek treated a 250-pound punching bag like Todd Fedoruk’s, well, you know.

The two ended the session in the ring, and with mom, middle brother and sister looking on, proceeded to pound each other to oblivion. Pretty intense stuff.

It’s easy to see where Derek gets his good humor from. Boogaard is a go-to quote in the Wild locker room because of his personality and quips, and mom, Joanne, was the same way in her story telling.

So was Ryan, who besides being an aspiring Canadian Mountie, is also Derek’s PR guy. Ryan, 23, is the Internet savvy one who finds every single thing that’s written about Derek daily worldwide and makes sure to fwd it to him. He’s also been known to make guest appearances in the commentary section of this blog and pre-scouts several of the league’s enforcers for Derek.

Ryan told some hysterical stories which should appear in the paper.

Krysten, at 6-foot-5, is a star basketball player. She’s headed to University of Kansas in the fall and will soon travel to Slovakia for world under-19s.

“Gaborik better stay away from her,” Derek cracked, although he probably wasn’t kidding.

For all those asking for T-shirts, Ryan said if you email Trevor Lakness at laktose93@hotmail.com, you can purchase them from him. Good night.

I’ve got a daughter for Gabby.

Just added to the last post and didn’t see this one.

So last year after Fedoruk got KO’d again by Orr, my buddy and I were on the bus after a Wild victory back to a fine St. Paul Bar, when we coined the term “Fedoruked”

As in…

“Did you see that dude get Fedoruked by Boogaard last night”

I guess it can be used anytime someone’s fist rearranges anothers face, and/or some unlucky dude gets knocked out cold.

Feel free to use it and pass it on to all your friends.

Just read the paper - Russo, could you not publicize any of the big dates for next year? I’d like to not have to wait three days for tix.

Lappy - Good Verb. I plan on using it often since my kid’s a klutz. As in (he was running in the yard and faceplanted when he tripped over the dog) “You just got Fedoruked by Basil!”

Thanks Ballgame…..

Just hoping to make all those English teachers back at “The Academy” proud of my imaginative vernacular.

I’m assuming that Basil is named after #17 who donned the Green, Gold, White and Black of the North Stars?

GreenStar, check the last thread.

I answered what I think the requirements are for people with a DUI who want to go to Canada.

It needs preplanning because I am told the customs officials cannot do a thing.

Good for the greasers. Curious to see what $$$ he signed for. For being touted as this summers “hot” UFA, sure took awhile for him to find a home.

It said long term, but details to follow.

Souray to the oilers, 5 years and $27m and a $5.4m cap hit. Let’s see, Souray’s size, toughness and 64 points or Kim Johnsson’s $4.85m cap hit and 22 points. Uhhhhh, I’ll take Sheldon with the $550k difference and the 42 point differential, thank you.

Man, our division is getting really stacked with some good tallent. Let’s hope that DR was right about this squad…

charlie, i might agree with you if souray wasn’t such a huge defensive liability.

Great to see the Boogaard’s getting some press. This year coming up will be one of Derek’s finest, and the video to prove will be on our site!

The Oilers signing Souray would be impressive if they had anybody else on there team.

Chris - Exactly. No Worries here.

Souray addresses their need for offense a little…but the book on him is he’s Skoula-like defensively. Roli’s gonna LOVE that!

The Grease are in a sad way right now.

Oh well, I’m over it.

IceMan,

Last november I road tripped with a couple others to ottawa and montreal for the wild games there and got stopped at sault ste marie for a background check. one in the party had DUI which is felony in canada. They said you were supposed to file petition with canadian consulate for entry and what not and then said you can buy a waiver for your trip for something like $300 canadian. Paid the fee, agreed not to drive and then had to check with the canadian border on the way out. on the way back we crossed at sarnia/port huron and the cat didn’t even check our licenses.

I have a relative who is canuck and he says it is just a money grab. kind of a way to tax americans since it isn’t that uncommon to have a DUI on your record that they check going back 10 years.

IceMan says:

GreenStar, that is something I was not aware of. I did not know that Customs could make any exceptions. It is a money grab.

A second set of people I am aware of arrived at the border in a float plane on a fishing trip. Three got to continue with the trip, the other guy was sent home.

they made it seem like they were making an exception but it after we got back, i heard it wasn’t all that uncommon. now the cat only had one and it was a while ago and he was upfront about it so maybe that helped.

i also know people that got to the border and turned around instead of being extorted by the canadian gov’t.

A coaching friend of mine with a common name had a bunch of trouble getting into Canada because someone with the same name had a DUI several years ago in Chicago. He was trying to get into BC for a hockey tournament. He finally convinced them that he was a different guy. It took several hours.

Eddie Shore says:

Ask any resort owner in Canada what they think about that one-sided, bush league law. They don’t see a dime of the borders “money grab”.

Don’t have any faith in our Federal Gov. to do anything about it anytime soon either.

Lapper, nothing wrong with being a ‘98 HS grad. That is when I graduated from HS, however it was from a small town more North in MN. I think the Canada and no Americans with DUI’s is kind of stupid.
