Monday update
Posted on November 26th, 2007 – 2:27 PMBy Kent Youngblood
Youngblood, again. So where is Russo, you ask? We’re listing him as day-to-day.
After a day off the Wild had an intense but relatively short practice, one several players missed, which brings us to today’s injury update:
1. Derek Boogaard left practice early with back spasms. He is day to day.
2. Kurtis Foster, who took a puck near his right eye Saturday, has a hairline fracture in his face. But he can play as soon as the swelling subsides. He is listed as possible for Wednesday, probably for Friday.
3. Josh Harding (head) and Petteri Nummelin (head and nose) will try to skate Tuesday.
4. Mikko Koivu’s left leg hasn’t healed enough for him to do any skating on his own. He has been limited to some weight lifting and working out on a stationary bike.
The good news is that Pavol Demitra had another good practice and should play Wednesday,.
And, on a sad note, Wild president and general manager Doug Risebrough’s mother, Marie Risebrough, succumbed to cancer Saturday in Ontario. Services are Thursday.

Mr. Youngblood,
I think you mean cancer, not canter.
Thanks for the update
Still irritating that a player (Ohlund) can intentionally injure a player and be back in the lineup sooner than the injured player.
Thoughts and Prayers to Risebrough’s family. Cancer is a nasty disease.
Thanks for the update #2.
Thanks for feeding us, #2.
Please extend to Mr. Risebrough the condolences of all Russotans on the passing of his mother.
Some things are more important than trades, free agents, line combinations and even wins and losses - and the health of your family is one of them.
So, Russo is on the IR? Or is he on the ‘PUP’ (physically unable to perform) list?
Sdaly, Ohlund gets to come back while Koivu is still out. And Brian Burke is demanding a conference call amongst GM’s, whining about player suspensions (so he can have some of his own?)
My condolences to the Risebrough family.
I don’t get why Burke thinks that a player’s team ought to appeal his suspension, but not the offended team.
Sad about Reier’s mom. The cancer is a difficult thing to watch a loved one go through.
After hearing about Mr. Risebrough’s mother losing her battle with cancer I’d like to extend my thoughts and prayers to his entire family. I’m reminded of the qoutes that Ken Dydren had of Doug (his road roomate) in his book “The Game.” He spoke so kindly of Doug, his genuine sincerity, and his ability to connect with people. Ken Dryden knew that when Doug asked about his family, he REALLY wanted to know how they were. I can only imagine his mother had some infuence on him in this regard.
I think NiNY speaks for all us when he says it’s your family that is most important.
Sincere condolences to the Risebrough family as well. Losing a parent is never easy.
As for the Russo…he didn’t pull his groin, did he? ![]()
Good one tbh1000 ![]()
Best wishes to DR and his fam…
My condolences to the Risebrough family.
As for Russo, I’m betting that he’s day to day because he got his Skouba goggles removed. (lasik) So hopefully he can see how bad Skouba/Johnsson/Burns really are….
I’d forgotten all about Dryden’s comments about DR in “The Game”, Lapper! Great call. Just makes you feel that much more sad for Doug and his family.
Condolences to DR and his family.
My best to Mr. Risebrough, his family and mother.
Celebrate the life, heal your heart.
tbh1000: I just emailed the director of the GTRCMBSHP, a Dr. Rosenrosen, and he assured me that no one matching Russo’s description has been admitted for observation, testing or treatment in the last week.
Please pass our condolences onto Mr. Risebrough and his family.
Please do pass on our condolences to the Riseborough family. Cancer is brutal. Just lost a friend last Monday. Going to service tonite.
That’s rough, ss6.
So, if Demo’s back, Foster’s out and Boogey’s D2D, then I see our lineup looking like this as of right now:
Forwards
Belanger
Demitra
Fedoruk
Foy
Gaborik
Moore
Parrish
Radio
Rolston
Shep
Rocky Dennis
Voros
Defensemen
Burns
Carney
Hill
Johnsson
Schultz
Skoula
Goalies:
Backstrom
Hards
INJ:
Boogaard
Koivu
Foster
Nummy
one thing about that lineup, if Rolston’s not going to produce playing center anyway, why not try him between Demo and Gaby?
prayers to the riser family and all who were touched by Ma riser.
here’s the reading i picked out when my grandmother passed this summer
2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1
It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
NiNY: interesting suggestion on Rolston, given the groin issues of the past year and a half, we probably have never seen these 3 get serious time together.
Mr. Risebrough & Slappy6: Condolences. Cancer sucks hard.
Nick - sorry I didn’t respond sooner. Ice was good - should’ve been. Wasn’t any better or worse than the Coliseum, though. It was a little freaky playing in front of that many empty seats. Nicest hockey locker rooms that I’ve ever gotten dressed in.
We lost the future Mr.’s dad to cancer this August. It was long, hard fought four year battle so I know what Risebrough and his family are going through as well. It is just a Brutal, nasty, wicked disease that you don’t want to wish even on Matt Cooke and Brian Burke. Good verse Greenstar. We went for shorter ones since that was more his style. We had something on the programs about ship sailing out of sight but knowing it was greeted on the other side.
McKenzie offers this follow up from the conference call today between the GMs and Bettman, Daly and Soup:
Adam: I’m wondering if it might be the spark that Rolston needs to get going.
If nothing else, assuming Gaby and Demo are the most likely candidates on our team to score a couple goals, then getting even a second assist might be enough to ket Rolston off the shnide.
meh…should be “get”, not “ket”..
Doug Risebrough said Wednesday that sportswriter Michael Russo will remain on an indefinite leave of absence — indefinitely.
“This is in Russo’s hands. We are not spending any time contacting Russo,” Risebrough said. “I am not pursuing any information. I understand your need to know, but you’re asking the wrong person because I’m not trying to find out.
“That’s what needs to be to solve the problem, and I’m comfortable with that.”
Russo has not talked publicly since leaving the Wild after a November 25th blog post. The Wild is 0-0 since he presumably began contemplating retirement.
Walz’s absence has left the Star Tribune severely shorthanded at coverage of the Wild, especially since the Star Tribune seems to be asking too much from fellow sportswriter Kent Youngblood, sending him to cover the Wild and the Timberwolves.
Asked if he needs to have answers from Russo in order to react as a GM and possibly remedy the Star Tribune writer position covering the Wild, Risebrough said: “You’re looking at a GM that rolls with the punches. … I might react, but I don’t have to know.”
nothing is short for us catholics ![]()
actually, it looks long but i got er done in under a minute.
Hey Kent: what are the differences between covering round ballers and hockey players from your perspective?
Which group rolls with more style?
get ‘er done! aas riigh
ballgame, out of curiosity, were you skating with one of the JMS groups at the X?
Greenstar - LOLLOL regarding last thread. I guess I did. Hope NiNY enjoyed it. ![]()
Yeah, doogs. Did you skate too?
No I couldn’t but I play goalie with them occasionally.
Too many goalies on this blog. But, at least you get free ice time.
just like everyone else, I send my condolences to DR and his family.
Nick thanks for the conf call update. The last part was interesting about the penalties and stuff. I wonder what they are thinking about with regard to breaking sticks on slashes?
Condolences to all that spoke of loved ones that have succumbed to that dreaded disease.
NiNY…I also checked in with the GTRCMBSHP and no Russo.
I think he went to get his lasik done. I know he has been prepping an ‘in-depth’ report on the state of officiating in the NHL. And before he asked the hard questions, he wanted to make sure HE had his eyes examined… ![]()
WRT…looks like a busy Wild week for us…games Wed, Fri and Sun. Perhaps we can solve Bettman’s problems and return the Wild to greatness with our astute powers of observation.
Thanks for posting that McKenzie follow up on the GM meeting, NiNY. Does anyone know why the league is concerned with Ovechkin or others playing around on the ice before pre-game? Is there some rule that only allows so much pre-game time on ice that such action would appear to violate?
Slightly off topic, but in 1994 I had a buddy who was interning with the Vikings and without going into detail, he arranged for me and 2 other guys to get field passes for each home game, provided we did a little work starting 3 hrs before kick-off. Many players wondered on the field before warm-ups, sometimes doing the goofiest things. John Randle used to work on field goals - he’d spray the ugliest line drive kicks all over the place. If Ovechkin wants to goof around before a game, why do we care?
Who has a wish list that would make the Wild better?
Any realistic deal you could make for a player that is probably available that the team could afford?
six - you don’t sound like someone who would doubt their abilities…hope NiNY liked it. where’s the confidence?
IceMan - didn’t we try this a week or so ago? all that kept coming up was foy and draft pick for hossa, as if that would happen. hope you have more luck this thread.
I think the Wild can afford anyone with the right deal. They’ve got about $2.7MM in cap space and if they’re sending salary out the door, they can take some back.
I’ve got a long wish list for the Wild, actually. There’s something about this roster that just seems unbalanced right now (not that it’s changed much since last season, but maybe that was part of the problem then, too). Anyway, I wouldn’t mind seeing something done, but it’s going to be dependent upon other teams going into the tank and deciding to shake things up. The way I see it, the Wild could stand to lose some wings and add some centers, and possibly defensemen as well.
I entertain ideas of Hossa, Sundin, or Jokinen coming to MN, but it kind of depends on the asking price for those guys. After last year’s sellers’ market at the trade deadline, I’m thinking the price would be very steep indeed for these players. Might be worth it, though.
teams usually sell UFA’s at the deadline, not players under contract. that would take jokinen off the list. also, most teams, if selling, and i believe toronto will be selling, want prospects and or draft picks. that means we won’t be moving salary.
Sundin is an interesting option. he’s not young but he’s a center and been around the block once or twice. I’d give toronto benny and belle for him today but its probably not enough. wonder if we’ve inquired what the cost is?
As for who it would take… realistically?
Bouchard, Kalus and a first maybe. Maybe toss in a Pouliot for sweetener. Maybe a bit less for Sundin since he’s old.
And you could throw in a Kurtis Foster to help make the salaries work.
Reading all your posts in regards to trades and such I was thinking “What about team chemistry” and almost as fast as my little/few brain cells had the thought they let it go. There does seem to be something happening with Foy/Voros but not much else.
Green* - I guess I’m feeling a little like the Wild. I need a W to build my confidence. Nick seems totally oblivious to this conversation which I think is kinda funny. He’s seems like the kind of guy to not miss a beat but…..
i think it is funny six. perhaps, like the wild, you gripping the stick a little tighter? maybe need to keep it simple? perhaps try not to do it all yourself?
Ladies and Gentlemen…
I’m flooding the backyard tonight - around 3 or 4 am! It’s going to be cold the next three or four days. Enough to get an inch or two down.
Man I wish I had a pond in the backyard.
….lololol maybe a little more trash talk between games and losen up on the stick….good advice. I should just relax and play my game.
that’s all i’d ask for, if i has someone to ask
how can these bruins call themselves men. jones has had 4 or 5 shifts and no one has even looked at him yet. he should be in the dressing room by now…
say, nice sweater on the gal between periods on NESN.
GreenStar: Don’t let Marney hear you like that!
i think we have an understanding, she is married after all.
GreenStar: at least there was a fight early in this game. I think the Wild could have used that on Wednesday.
voros fought brown wednesday
first…you’ll always be my favorite slapshot, slapshot6.
second…NOW can we start to say that the Philly organEYEzation needs to be held accountable for the actions of it’s players?
I think the Hartnell hit on Alberts may be the worst of the three since it was CLEAR that Alberts was in a terribly vulnerable position and there was no reason for Scott to crush him like that.
If the NHL doesn’t fine the team or Stevens or something then I will lose some of the dwindling respect I have for Bettman, Daly and Campbell, collectively.
i’ll agree on the hartnell hit. i think he got a 5 and a gamer so it will be reviewed.
The bigger question is what about the bruins? This is the 2nd guy the flyers knocked out of the game indefinately and they just skated around like nothing happened. what a bunch of p*ssies. Where was the blood? Especially in today’s NHL, you gotta be tough.
Green*…I don’t know if you’re more sarcastic about p*ssies, the BJs or Marney.
But…there is a common thread in all of that…:P
I haven’t got much respect for CC and Company. Their adjudication doesn’t make the GMs Sweat.
Yeah…it’s a strange night here…LOL
In the spirit of Buccigross and NHL 2Night - what Larry Flynt was to his lawyer the Philadelphia Flyers are to Colin Campbell.
Any chance the Bruins are waiting to take care of the Flyers at home instead of on the road? They have even more reason now. The hit on Chara was even borderline.
What is Burke asking for here ?? It looks to me like Burke is concerned that his team will be hit with big fines in the playoffs
On the mega-suspensions of 20 and 25 games to Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice, respectively: Burke had questioned whether the GMs ever signed off on or were advised of a dramatic change in standards for supplementary discipline, but was told each discipline situation is handled on a case by case basis and that the two big suspensions are not necessarily indicative of a sweeping across the board change to the approach on supplementary discipline.
When the Ducks come to the X everybody should chant OZ OZ OZ OZ. This comment on Burke is some of the funniest stuff I have ever read
Author Craig Mactavish
“He reminds me of the Wizard of Oz, where you comb his hair, put a white shirt on him, and wheel him out in front of a camera and he’s going to say whatever you guys want.”
Just saw a replay of the Hartnell hit on the NHL network. That is just rediculous. There was absolutely no reason for him to hit the guy. He wasn’t even on his skates for christs sake. I say give him half a season off.
I don’t think Hartnell will get much, if anything.
First of all, my deepest sympathy to DR and family. I lost a parent to cancer and I would not wish this on my worst enemy. It is horrible to witness and it took years for us to recover from the pain of watching our loved one suffer so.
Second…I wonder if the NHL has blinders with Philly. I saw the hit by Jones on Bergeron while watching the WAshington game last night..and it was from behind and just nasty.
BTW Bergeron may be out for the season. Who knows about his hockey career?
And the NHL gave Jones all of TWO games
Question: If Russo is the Don, does that make Youngblood Consiglieri?
Hope everyone had a good Turkey Day and good Holiday Weekend.
I was at NHL.Com today and I noticed that the Wild will have two primetime games on the NHL Network, so I thought I would post the schedule.

wouldn’t he be more like fat clemenza? a captain?
toivo why do you think that? As far as I’m concerned, that was worse than the bergeron incident because the guy was on his knees and much more vulnerable.
I think #2 is more like Jelly from Analyze This and Analyze That.
A great question was asked of Schultz this morning on 93X. “Has anyone ever seen the front of Matt Cooke jersey or just the name on his back as he skates away like a p*ssy?”
Maybe one of the fans could take a run at Matt Cooke as he is leaving the X. How great would that be to see a fan just explode Matt Cooke from the side as he is stepping on the team bus.
BNAG, what was his answer?
from what i see ofthe league and suspensions, because the bruins player was not unconscious and carried off on a stretcher, the suspension will be ohland like. also, hartnell didn’t leave his feet to make contact with his head.
Schultz toed the company line pretty well and said that Cooke is an agitator and that is what he does is stick and run.
Maybe a fan should climb into the penalty box and fight him there.
That would be awesome…
Aaron, you mean blast Cooke into the side of the team bus and then run away as fast as possible? It would be poetic justice, but it also wouldn’t be worth the trouble, because:
1 - He wouldn’t learn anything
2 - MN fans would be reviled around the league
3 - Assault and battery charges
4 - etc, etc, etc.
My condolences also to Doug and his family. Our family lost our mother in early October and today would have been her 81st birthday. God Bless you and yours Doug and she is now in a better place free of pain.
Ballgame commented that there are too many goalies on this blog, doesn’t he realize the smartest and most intelligent people play goalie!
BTW, I’ll be in net tonight for the broomball opener 5 pm at the little rink set up accross from Rice Park. Anyone is welcome to call me a sieve, just don’t offer me any donuts!
Wafer,
1 - You’re right he wouldn’t learn anything.
2 - MN fans would be reviled around the leage if it were anyone else. We may be revered around the league (except Van.) for doing it to Cooke.
3 - Stick and run just like he does, no A&B because you won’t get caught.
Chris, just a hunch. I could be wrong, but I don’t see him getting a big suspension for that hit, if any. When I was watching NHL on the Fly they talked about it some, but not enough to make me think anything big is coming down.
El Gato,
Greenlay, Gorg, Healy, Hayward… Goalies!
Then of course there is that fella Dryden, but that’s only because he couldn’t skate very fast! (-:
Tough times for us all around it seems. I’m still salty about my boy (Mikko) being out too. Four games was not enough for me either. His intent was to injure Mikko. And he accomplished that. So Mikko is out. This guy gets back in. Something is wrong. I guess now we get to see what this team is really made up of…who can we expect to produce…
I think the correct term for Kent as No. 2 in mafia terms would be the Underboss. Or, in Italian, I believe the term is Capo Bastone.
I nominate Fedoruk to give Ohlund a two-handed slash either in the leg or wrist hard enough to break it.
The League could then suspend Fedoruk which would be just fine.
So Youngblood is like Paulie Walnuts, but without the wings in his hair?
I can buy that.
well I guess that makes sense Toivo. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
El Gato used to play some broomball goalie myself, now I play D. I’m glad too, we’ve been outscored 16-2 our first 2 games. Ofcourse we have only had 1 sub per game.
Smuggla, JL is too restrained to ever condone that. We might have to contract through Rammer to get that job done.
Just don’t call him Fredo!
is it JL or the league?
boston didn’t even look at jones last night and just stood around after hartnell got his boarding major.
chicago didn’t touch cooke after he sent wiesneski to the dressing room early in the first for a hit from behind.
this idea of you get one of ours, we’ll get one of yours seems to have passed.
fredo got the chicks though
JL is startin to look like a damn pansy in my eyes.
Green*, imagine if Chicago had gone after Pinky and the Brain, Van fans would have had a collective coronary.
i’m sure they would have but that isn’t what stopped chicago from going after them.
It just doesn’t happen anymore.

boston and philly are in the top 5 in the league in fighting majors according to graphic last night on NESN. with this jones incident and then the hartnell hit only the one fight early in the 1st though.
i’m not agreeing or disagreeing. i do think fretting about the apparant lack of “toughness” with the wild may be wasted energy.
Thanks Nick, you’re my favorite in NY.
Are we talking “leave the gun, take the cannolli”? Because I think that is the mind set that should be taken with Cooke. If ya knowwha’Imean.
Why is Burke concerned about major fines for his players THIS season? They didn’t get many last season, not that they shouldn’t have. Maybe the Cup is headed East this season?…….
how many times with bettman be asked why the wild don’t have more minnesotans on the roster?
GreenStar: are you sure you’re not a closeted Iowan?
2 Games for hartnell
only been to iowa once. i see no reason to return.
born in st paul
college in wisky
now live in mpls
ha…I didn’t really want you to show me your Minnesotan card, but that’s just as well. ![]()
I think 2 games is a total joke.
If I was Steve Downie I’d be royally pissed off right now.
only 2 games huh? I still think thats kind of weak. Wishin I had xm radio right now…
why don’t they just fine him $100?
Exactly Chris! Or make him take a commercial flight instead of the charter for the next couple games.
i’ve always said downie was way too many games. the bruin hartnell crushed left the ice under mostly his own power. macammond didn’t. macammond looked dead. that is why downie got 20.
GreenStar: I (think and) hope you’re right. But you don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to draw the inference between a rookie that isn’t a difference maker getting a long suspension and an up-and-comer making $4M getting a slap on the wrist.
The Downie suspension is only too long because they didn’t use it as a precedent. If they had been basing these subsequent hits on the Downie situation it would at least be in context.
I think the next time someone does something like this it’s partly on the league’s hands.
good points.
while i think hits are a little harder to judge length of suspension, using your stick as a weapon should be a no brainer yet the league doesn’t get it.
boulerice used his stick and got 25 as he should have. ohland was just as malicious and got 4. sticks are used for hitting the puck and that is it.
I just watched a replay of the hit to see what the H-E-double hockey stix you’re all talkin’ about. The angle I saw on ESPN.com wasn’t very good, but I don’t think I would put the Hartnell and Downie hits on the same level. Just from a gut instinct, the Downie hit was far more offensive to me. Not necessarily saying 2 games is or isn’t appropriate, but I think it’s in the range. I didn’t see enough to warrant anything near the 20 game level.
Also, the clip I saw showed Alberts basically laying there in the knocked out position, much like MacAmmond.
GreenStar - Agree completely that stick offenses should be no-brainers. Still can’t believe that a league that acknowledges that its discipline depends in large part on the resulting injury only hands out 4 games to a guy whose 2-hander is so vicious it breaks another’s leg.
You’d think Ohlund was from Alberta the way CC and Company suspended him. D’ya think maybe CC was confused and he thought it was Cooke? I mean, both names have vowels in them…
I’m glad I will be at Sunday’s game.
Maybe since Salo is back Vancouver won’t be so protective of Ohulnd.
Talking about all the p*ssies in the league…can you remember the last time an act of ‘retribution’ took place? To settle the score from a cheap shot in a previous game?
Immediately Bertuzzi/Moore comes to mind…
Toivo, there always has to be some bad apples in the bunch.
Work has just piled up this afternoon, so my debut has to be pushed back until tomorrow night. Back-to-Back day games would have probably killed me though.
There was some postings earlier about teams not retaliating.
My theory is that because there are people sitting at home in the tv audiance that abhor any violence that they influence the NHL’s lack of a decent tv contract with the networks.
So, the NHL wants to limit the fights but the dirty stuff goes on and they only make a half-hearted attempt.
Thanks for sharing
I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
