For second time in four weeks, Gaborik is NHL’s First Star of the Week; Hill placed on injured reserve
Posted on January 14th, 2008 – 10:41 AMBy Michael Russo
Marian Gaborik was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week for the second time in four weeks. The release is below. His 47 points rank seventh in the West. His 25 goals rank third in the West.
He was just on an NHL media conference call. Lots of questions about his relationship with Jacques. Nothing new. He re-iterated what he said in my story a few days ago. He wasn’t happy with his lack of ice time in recent games and he doesn’t need Jacques to motivate him through the media. He said he knew he was a minus-3 in the first period of two recent games and needed to change some things.
The Wild has placed defenseman Sean Hill (sprained ankle) on injured reserve. That means he’ll miss at least the next two home games vs. Calgary and Anaheim.
As of now Derek Boogaard’s still on IR.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / JANUARY 14, 2008
GABORIK, GARON AND HARTNELL NAMED NHL ‘THREE STARS’ OF THE WEEK
NEW YORK (January 14, 2008) — Minnesota Wild right wing Marian
Gaborik, Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mathieu Garon and Philadelphia Flyers
left wing Scott Hartnell have named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week
ending January 13.
FIRST STAR — MARIAN GABORIK, RW, MINNESOTA WILD
Gaborik scored eight points (four goals, four assists) and posted a
+9 rating as the Wild captured three of four games for the week. He
recorded points in each game, including three multiple-point performances.
After tallying an assist in a 3-1 loss to the Dallas Stars Jan. 7, Gaborik
recorded a goal and two assists in regulation time and the game-winning
shootout goal in a 6-5 victory over the League-leading Detroit Red Wings
Jan. 10. The Wild improved to 22-0-2 all-time when Gaborik tallies three
or more points, including 13 consecutive victories. He notched two goals
in a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Jan. 11 and closed the week with
one goal and one assist in a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes Jan. 13.
Gaborik leads the Wild and ranks 18th in League scoring with 47 points (25
goals, 22 assists) in 40 games.

Well done to Gabby. He deserves it given the way he has been playing as of late.
Good for the NHL to recognize Gaborik. Now if he can keep it up…! ![]()
Gaby is clearly an elite NHL player and he’s still quite young. He has a long future ahead of him and I’m glad he’s on our team!
My only complaint with Gaborik has been consistency.
This is consistent.
Good on him - and when he plays like he has, he IS a Superstar.
Good for him, unless his head swells up now and his effort wanes again.
Hopefully he realizes this hot streak coincides with the hard work he’s been putting forth lately after JL’s criticism. That goal in the Hawks game was set up by his defensive effort.
Congrats to Mr. Gaborik.
AustinTX - Aeros tickets are always available and very affordable. Would I suggest coming to a game? Well you seem to be a big Wild fan so I believe it would be worth while. The level of hockey is quite good. But if you are just looking for a fix I believe Austin has a team, the Ice Bats? Or, the Aeros are in San Antonio on March 23rd, that would be a closer drive.
Funny thing how quickly you can go from hero to goat and back again in this sport.
Oh, going to San Antonio could be easier. Thanks for the idea Aaron. We do have the Ice Bats here… which are affiliated with the MN Wild as well I think (the colors are the same). I have been meaning to go, but I have not got around to it yet. The tickets are super cheap too. I just think seeing the Aeros is the closest thing I could get to a Wild game… especially since some of those players will likely end up playing at the X at some point.
By the way, I think it’s important that I let you guys know the real reason for the Wild’s latest winning streak. And it is not Harding or Gaborik. The real reason is… me.
That’s right. The Wild remains undefeated (8-0) when I watch the Wild play online. Including the last three games. There you have it folks. I think the organization just at least send me fruit basket or something…
Nice work Wallshot!!!
I had a similar effect on the team last season during their nice winning streak towards the end of the year. I had brought in a plastic Wild cup from the X to use as a water cup at work. The streak began when I brought the cup in.
After the Wild finally did lose to Calgary in the last week of the season I washed the cup and tried to recreate the magic for the post season. I think I needed a new cup altogether.
Wallshot, you are no longer allowed to watch games any other way. You must watch all games on a computer until further notified. Thanks for your time, we will be in contact soon.
Yours truely,

I picked one up at the Swarm game the other day, maybe you should send me your address and I can mail it to ya! ![]()
ps I didn’t wash it either… :-\
Wow, great work, ’shot. Now the question is what do you do with this awesome power? Keep watching online or just save it for the big games and playoffs.
Yours truely,

DOIIHWFTWWB for short.
yes G*!
the longer the acronym the better i say
ah ha ha ha ha DOIIHWFTWWB, that’s awesome!
And oh so easy to remember.
How about a phonetic saying of teh acronym? Doy-Wift-Woob?
does hill on IR mean DB comes off?
Wow, missed a lot of ranting while off the blog, and it wasn’t even about the Wild! Great to see the team playing better, hopefully Good Wild stays and Bad Wild stays away.
Agree on sports talk in this town, there is no hockey knowledge not only on radio but TV sports people either (the most knowledgable would probably be Jeff Passolt, and he’s an anchor).
WRT, glad you enjoyed the Hawks game, probably a different atmosphere in United than the old ‘Hand Gun and Hard Liquor’ nights and the old Chicago Stadium in the early 80’s for North Star games.
Don Russo, you need to watch a tape of George Pelawa sometime, he was an amazing talent. 6′ 5″ about 240 lbs with soft hands and slick moves, I can’t believe it’s been over 20 years since his death.
Good question G*. You would think so… But who knows, maybe they will keep Boogie stashed there long term so they don’t have to make a roster move.
Games at the UC are a little depressing. We saw the Wild win there a few years back and we were in the 9th row of the lower bowl. There were plenty of empty seats around us and we sat next to a guy on a business trip from Montreal. On the up side, there were quite a few Wild fans there that night.
Gato - Dubay on KFAN isn’t terrible, and the Beyond the Pond show on Saturdays is decent as well. Can’t think of any TV folks that know a lick other than the ‘casters on the games.
disagree Tom, dubay’s knowledge of hockey starts and ends with the gophers. I am not sure if i would call that knowledge either as it usually is first class homerism.
If the Beyond the Pond guys are not using press passes to attend Wild games then shame on them. From a coverage on KFAN perspective, it is too bad it appears KFAN/KTLK will not be getting the Wild. Oh well, you can always rely on the 830 signal when you need it.
you can always rely on the 830 signal when you need it.
i picked up the 830 signal while in sudbury ontario on my way to ottawa last year.
note to russotans, unless you like nickel mines or andrew brunette, there is no reason to travel to sudbury.
Green* All three of them are Rodent Homers. Nice to SCSU get 3 out of 4 points this past weekend too ![]()
George Pelawa played in our rink a couple times in highschool so we got to seem him up close.
He was awesome. He was killed in an auto accident while out drinking with his parents if I recall.
He was a behemoth of a player when players simply were not that big.
Can’t think of any TV folks that know a lick other than the ‘casters on the games.
I can’t even think of them.
kj: I completely agree with your SCSU assessment. There’s no other feeling in the world, than when you are in a sports bar and are the only one cheering in the entire establishment when the Huskies score ![]()
It would be cool if SCSU fans cheered when the Huskies played teams other than the Gophers. Your school just might break that 0-8 NCAA slump!
SCSU Alum and fan here and I cheer for every game the Huskies play. I will be in Colorado Springs for that weekend series and you can bet I’ll be cheering.
WRT, glad you enjoyed the Hawks game, probably a different atmosphere in United than the old ‘Hand Gun and Hard Liquor’ nights and the old Chicago Stadium in the early 80’s for North Star games.
Yeah, El Gato, we did…it was a lot different than the old Stadium, but hopefully if the Hawks can come off their 3 1/2-week road trip (which starts next weekend) at least at .500 or better. The Hawks do not play at home from this Wednesday until Feb. 17, save for Jan. 24 vs. Columbus. This includes two West Coast road trips and 5 games vs. Northwest Division teams (Colorado twice, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver once each) all away from the United Center.
Hopefully Chicago will still remember that the team exists after the road rip ends…they’ll be good in 2-3 years if they can keep everyone together…
Adam…there won’t be NCAAs for the Rodents this year…heh heh heh
Aaron…remember Dean Weasler (G)?
4 years officially part of the “Dog Pound Club”
I cheer everytime the Huskies play. Does Roe remind anyone else of PMB? He has the potential to be real good!
KJ, so, they are Gopher Homers. Is that unusual considering the Gophers are the local team?
But, here is something for all of you who are also college fans to consider.
Some of you felt some special glee when Okposo left the Gophers early and signed with the Isle’s, but you might want to consider.
If I understand correctly, the huge financial incentive for players to sign an NHL contract early disappeared at the start of the 2007 season as part of the last CBA. I thought good, the kids get to spend time in college.
That was the reason given that Johnson signed with the Blues and Goligowski with Pitt, etc this summer. It was their last chance for a huge pay day.
Charley Waters, at the east side paper, reports Okposo gets some over $30,000 for the rest of the year and with a bonus later, which confirms the price has come down greatly.
Here is my point: before if a club drafted a college player, under the old scheme they would need to ante big buck$ to turn the player pro.
Perhaps they would be cautious about bringing players up because of the size of that investment. Therefore, only the very best of the college would ever be offered NHL contracts early the rest stay in college.
Now though, if an NHL team can buy an Okposo for only $30,000 for the balance of the year, they can afford to make lots of mistakes. There is such a small investment involved they can aggressively go after many of their draftees and rape all of the college teams.
Any college team that is falling out of contention is a candidate for losing players. It is not just the Gophers.
And for Snow to say ‘the signing of Okposo is because the lack of quality of coaching by Lucia’ is merely self serving, lame, and only creates a ready made scapegoat if Okposo does not make the grade.
kj, there probably won’t be any NCAA’s for any Minnesota team this year, except the Bemidji St. Beavers!
I remember Weasler from both HS and when he played with the old Rochester Mustangs of the USHL.
I think the game would be improved if there was an agreement for college kids like there is for the Canadian Major Juniors (ie if the kid’s under 20, he has to play in the NHL or he goes back to juniors). Make it the same for college. It would prevent another Okposo situation and help the colleges keep their players for a reasonable amount of time (2 to 3 years).
On a side note. Does anyone know what Mark Parrish did to his hair? In the interview last night on FSN, he was wearing a ski cap and kinda looked silly even for a hockey player in an interview. I mean, it could be fashion but it seemed odd. Just wondering
Speaking of interviews, why are hockey players so boring during interviews? Wouldn’t you like to see someone who was a bit more candid and higher-energy. It just seems like everytime a hockey player gets interviewed (minus Roenick) he’s quiet, reserved, and of few words.
I think it would be fun to have an interview with a hockey player be like an interview with Tony Romo or Micheal Strahan.
Oh ya, I remember Weasler. I was at SCSU from fall 1999 to spring of 2003, the glory days with Malone, DiCasmirro, Eastman, Scotty Meyer, Hartigan, Cullen, Hendricks among others.
I remember getting the #1 seed and first round bye in the NCAAs only to play Michigan in the 2nd round in Michigan’s building.
Sure, the Huskies NCAA record is brutal, but the NCAA didn’t do SCSU any favors the one time they had a good shot of advancing.
Speaking of interviews, why are hockey players so boring during interviews? Wouldn’t you like to see someone who was a bit more candid and higher-energy.
Personally, I prefer them that way. Humble would be how I interpret it - not boring.
Beadwench -
Parry said his old lady was “trying” hair products out on him before she uses them, hence the ??? hair-do.
As long as he keeps it at that. If he starts painting his finger nails ala Sean Avery, then I’d start asking the question.
^^^Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The vast majority of interviews that I see/hear are either between periods or right after a game. A point in time when a player is still trying to catch thier breath aside from trying to answer questions. It’s just a theory, but that might have something to do with the lack of energy…
Goody, I agree.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not asking for the “Ocho Cinco”, TO, or Warren Sapp style of interview. I would just like to see a guy give an interview like he is having fun. Smile and joke around a bit after you win (I see it a bit in Harding’s interviewing).
A lot of it also has to do with the interviewer as much as with the interviewee.
D&D do interviews about as well as they do play by play and color commentary.
FYI: The Flames got some insurance for Kipper in the form of CuJo.
Aaron/Wood…
I split seats with Dean at the X. His dad was the best man at my wedding and we split seats until he passed away last year. I helped coach in Rosemount back in the day (youth hockey).
Dean was a very good goalie until he tore up his knee at SCSU. He still played some minor pro hockey but… There were a LOT of very good players at SCSU while he was there. It was a lot of fun going to games with his dad.
NiNY - So you’re saying Kipper will play less than 80 games???
BNAG: I don’t know…CuJo DID just win the Spengler Cup all by himself!
Eklund’s credibility is well-chronicled here, and the subject of this particular rumor might make it a non-starter right off the bat…but…
He has Demitra currently on his rumor chart, though at a relatively low probability of being moved. The teams that he reports are interested, though?
I quote:
“Hard to believe that he could be traded, and yet rumours are constant. The Leafs for Sundin? Interesting if an extension could be reached. Habs also have interest.
Updated: January 14, 1:20 PM ET “
Thats a joke right? I can’t see any reason why we would trade Demitra right now. POSSIBLY Rolston, but not Demitra. I see us re-signing him at season’s end. Thats just my .02
Nick - shame on you for posting Eklund rumors here! You should know better.
come on! It’s deader’n disco in here today!
So this Eklund chap says we are looking to trade Demo for Sundin? I don’t trust that at all… but, say it is true, do you guys think that would be a good trade??
True enough, Nick. I don’t understand where the positive us in this scenario for Toronto though. Are we talking Demitra++? Straight up just doesn’t make sense for them.
If I was Toronto’s GM, I would wait till near the deadline and look for picks and prospects. A player like Sundin should command a huge price from someone. Unless of course they turn things around, which isn’t quite impossible.
Should we read anything into Hill being placed on IR and Boogey not coming off IR? Does this mean we are looking to add someone or is it just that we can wait another day or so to bring Boogey off.
Austin, Sundin has 49 points, is a plus-11 (on a team that is minus 25 overall) and wins over 54% of his faceoffs, so yeah that seems like it would be a good trade.
However, I haven’t seen him play in probably a couple of years so I have no idea how he would fit in here.
I think it would be a negative trade for the Wild.
We get a guy who is a bit older, almost legendary among hockey fans, and has been producing better.
Then again, we lose a younger player (not by much) who is BFF with the face of our franchise. If Demo gets traded, for some reason, I can’t see Gabby staying after his current contract is up.
So now, there is “rumor” of the Wild going after either Sundin, Hossa, Blake and (my wishful thinking) Modano.
I would say I would like any of these additions to the team as long as we didn’t give up our key guys. (Demitra, Gabby, PMB, Burns, Shultz, and possibly Parrish)
I would think Johnnson would have to be a part of almost any trade we do since his cap hit would be a nice reduction from the team and our over-abundance of D-men.
woodcock, DR had to travel to Switzerland and check out a hot prospect that was leading his team in scoring and was planning on signing him to a contract and bringing him back for a spot on the Wild roster. Unfortunately, when he got there, he found out the prospect was Erik Westrum, so he called the home office to bring Boogey off tomorrow and he was going to stay and check ‘the slopes’ for any other prospects!
I was looking at the Houston stats and noticed that Belle is still at 1g and 1 a in 34 games. Unless he is playing great shut-down defense (by the way he is -3) looks like it could be a while before we see him again. I also note that Scott doesn’t have any points.
Sundin for Demo sounds ridiculous…at first.
But what if that happened? Assuming they wouldn’t resign Sundin, what would prevent Demo from coming back to MN, as a UFA, AFTER they lock up Hossa?
The Cap?
If Sundin gets traded, it won’t be for key guys (Except maybe PMB). They are going to want prospects and picks. All the same, I’d love to see him here. Resign him and not the anemic Brian Rolston.
Gunslinger, someone would have to be willing to want Johnsson cap hit, which will be over $5M the next 2 years. I’m all for it, but it’s not going to happen. Actually Johnsson has been playing much better recently and hopefully the trend continues. I really think if any D man is going it’s Foster or Carney. They both seem to be on JL’s bad side.
What about this:
Rolston, Johnnson, Rd 2
for
Sundin
El Gato, FWIW the cap it for Johnsson is $4.85 mil but I still don’t think anyone would take it.
Having said that, I’ve been pretty satisfied with his play lately, over-priced contract nothwithstanding. I don’t think there is anyone (currently)on the Wild roster that could take his place with out seeing at least some drop off.
*cap HIT
Gunslinger, those are the kind of players you pick up when trying to make a run. If they were in that position, they wouldn’t be giving up Sundin.
the anemic Brian Rolston
who is tied for 3rd on the team in scoring and 2nd in goals. if he is anemic what does that say about the rest of the team?
Rolston, Johnnson, Rd 2
for
Sundin
doubtful. for one, sundin has a no trade clause. he ain’t coming here unless we have a legit shot at winning the cup and if he reads this blog, the will would be lucky to make the playoffs. 2nd, i know management in toronto isn’t the brightest but I don’t think even they would take on salary when moving sundin. Toronto is a quagmire and needs to blow up and start over, you do that with prospects and draft picks. johnsson hurts them in more ways than we can count.
johnsson hurts them in more ways than we can count.
I don’t know about that. I can count pretty high.
If I take off my shoes…
touche
Perhaps anemic isn’t an apt description, but his play can be frustrating at times. Also, I don’t think he is going to be worth the raise he likely commands
bdub: I think you just need to cross that bridge when you come to it. It doesn’t make sense for the Wild to trade its second best scoring threat while it is still in contention. The only thing you are going to get for a player at his age and contract situation is “futures” or at best a player of similar quality and contract status. Neither of those things would improve the Wild “now” and therefore not help a playoff run.
If the Wild falls out of contention, however, then it would seem logical to move someone like him.
Also of note: The Wild has 13 players unsigned for next year right now. That’s over half the team! I didn’t realize it was quit that much. We could be looking at a very different roster next season.
BTW: I heard tonight that Brian Campbell turned down $25M/5 years. Okay, he’s been loosely described as a comp for Schultz around here. If he can get more than $5M per there’s no way we resign Schultz for that kind of coin.
re: Campbell vs. Schultz…I would hope that Nick would be less expensive since he’s not as much of an offensive threat as Soup.
Man, just surfing nhlnumbers.com. Detroit has some amazing bargains on its roster. Zetterberg for $2.7M this year and $2.9M next year, Holmstrom for 2 more years at $2.25 per. Wow.
Campbell has way more offensive production. He has 29 points already this season. I don’t think he is in the same contract category as Schultz.
Wallshot, I agree with you that trading Rolston is not an option right now, and I didn’t really advocate it.(I would do it for Sundin but that ain’t going to happen.) I’m just saying when it comes time to dole out contracts for next year, Rolston’s price is most likely to be too high IMO.
bdub: That seems likely to be the case. It will be interesting to watch what happens this offseason.
The team seems to be coming together pretty well, I thought Yohnsson played pretty well yesterday in getting the puck out of the zone, same for Skoula. I did not see any goats yesterday.
I get to enjoy Wednesdays game from the X. Hopefully it will be enjoyable. I’m sitting in the lower level, an area I have limited experience with, normally I sit up in the 200 level. It’s nice winning tickets at work. The Mr is uber excited. If the boys play as well as they have in the last few games it should be a good game. Wallshot your watching on the net on Wed right? I want a win.
nice score bandgeek!
I’ll be in 218 like normal…watching, wating, hoping that Bad Marty does not appear… ![]()
Greenstar,
Your seeing a team in the Wild that I have made prediction to win the cup this year or the latest next year, but its coming. Enjoy the ride Greenstar
NObody got nuthin to say tonight?
No cowboy message either.
Iceman: At times it’s best to step back and listen…if nothing is being said, must mean that most are satisfied with how things have been going recently…
Bandgeek: Nice win on the office tickets!
Mr. Russo, I love your stories and blog, I read them every single day. BUT, why so much emphasis on an alleged rift between Jacques Lemaire and Marian Gaborik? I listened to the conference call tape, and felt that Marian really did not want to talk about the issue, but dutifully answered while trying not to make much of it. I mean he wins an award and all the questioners wanted to know about was his relationship with Jacques Lemaire. I thought the other things he said were far more important, especially where he said that these recognitions seem to come when the team is winning, and that’s a good thing. Why didn’t you say that in the blog above?
And then to start these things out in the first place, Jacques Lemaire seemed to have made his strongest statements to you guys, the media, only when you guys kept needling him. Isn’t this another case of the media blowing things out of proportion just because controversy makes your job easier? Aren’t you guys supposed to report the news and not create the news?
Mr. Russo-
Thanks for the mid-season awards article, as well as the coverage of the ownership change.
Boogie’s sister is @ Kansas or Kansas State (Big 12 women’s basketball). How is she doing?
Mort (nice name btw… that wouldn’t happen be a Pratchett reference would it?), controversey is what the media needs to survive. It may not be the most productive stuff to write about, but it is usually what keeps people reading (it’s sad I know). Not Russo’s fault per se, it’s more just the nature of the beast.
So tomorrow night, the Wild faces one of its most fearsome opponents: Jarome Iginla (or if you prefer, his full name is Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla). So with out further ado, here are some “facts” attesting to his greatness:

Alright, 7 minutes between Wafer’s post and mine and I get called a cowboy?!?!
Slimbo - fire that cup on down to Houston where I will turn it into good fortune for the Wild.
Ask and you shall receive - I’ve seen some requests for an Aeros game on the NHL Network or FSN North, well here is your chance - I just received the following release from the Aeros:
http://www.aeros.com/team/news/index.html?article_id=1646
If your interested I would bookmark the page for future reference.
Thanks Aaron. I will try to watch some of those games. Has Boogey come off IR yet? We now have one open roster spot but can’t really imagine a forward line guy coming up from Houston since JL has said that there isn’t an opening for Branko or Boogey yet with the way guys are playing. Any chance a D might come up with Hill on IR? Probably not since we do have 7 healthy D. Maybe just waiting? Hmm. Anything going on?
There is no need to mess with the team chemistry in Minnesota or Houston right now. Both teams are playing well and the Wild don’t really need to make a roster move at this point.

A in H,
Thanks for the info on the Aeros games. Living in Wisconsin, I will have to wait for the replays on FSN North, but that’s ok, it will be fun to see some of the Aeros guys we talk about here on the ice finally.
Hey Aaron thanks for that Aeros info! I wonder If I will get those games on FSN here in Austin??
With Division games coming in bunches now, plus the Anaheim games, you would think JL an DR would want Boogey in the line-up over Radio.
Putting Hill on IR shows they are probably going to bring Boogey in since they would need to de-activate someone before they activate him.
I think Radio has officially lost his job.
Even Jarome Iginla cannot bring a cup to Calgary.
If Bret Favre played hockey, Jarome Iginla would kick his a$$.
Jarome Iginla would be a better player in a Wild jersey.
Good read in the paper today on Masterton.
hard for me to say radio has lost his job after what 3 games by foy? i think right now foy will play until he skoula’s but to declare radio out is a little premature, IMHO
I don’t expect we’ll see Boogard activated unless someone else (in addition to Hill) goes on IR. The reason is that if they do activate Boogard, when Hill is ready to play again, he’d either have to sit on IR waiting (like Boogard and Nummelin before him) or they’d have to make a roster move (waive or trade someone)to make room for Hill to be activated.
So keeping Boogard on IR and having an empty roster spot works out the best for them. They can activate either if they decide they need them but right now I don’t think they need either.
Since kj brought up Favre I am curious to know if there are any Packer fans amoung this collection of Wild fans. I am not one of you but I do know some Wild games are on the FSN North WI version and have wondered how popular the Wild are over there (outside of Craig Leipolod).
G* I politely disagree with you. ![]()
4. things keep pointing to Radio losing his job.
1. Foys consistent play in the last three games. He has racked up points in all three, and has seemed to light a fire under Shep and Fridge. But this alone wouldn’t make Radio lose his role on the team.
2. The initial acquisition of the Fedoruk. Picking him up was to basically fill in for what Radio has not been this year - a physical force on the forecheck - and when Fedoruk was claimed off waivers, immediately Radio was pointed at, as on his way out.
3. Too many men. We are over the roster limit. Boogey is ready to come back, and although Hill is out with an ankle sprain, he probably won’t be out that long and will be re-activated. Therefore we have one extra guy. IF the Wild have to place someone on waivers, who do you think it will be? The guy who has stepped up in the last 3 games and is off to a hot start in the second half of the season, or the guy who has been vastly underachieving this year?
4. The trade deadline is nearing. If the Wild were to make a move, most likely they will have to part with prospects and young players. If that is the case, and Radio is still around, I think he will be finding himself in a new sweater along with someone else.
This is just my opinion. I just thought I would expand on it a bit more.
Awesome news A in H. It’ll be fun to watch the Aeros and catch some of the future Wild.
the wild will be fine if they waive either of the two. i just don’t understand the thinking that foy is some great player now simply because he has had a couple good games.
You can’t just keep putting guys on waivers, you have to try and get something for them.
Maybe that is why Moore was a day late getting on waivers? DR was trying to work some sort of trade. Moore for a minor leaguer or late round pick?
I think these few games are Foy’s “job interview” in that DR wanted to see more of him and give him another chance. Further, I think that it’s a horserace between Foy, Radio, and Nummy as to who will stay and who will go.
Nice article about Masterson - why didn’t they do a trophy in ‘06 or ‘07? ‘04 is the last year listing a winner. (I assume ‘05 didn’t have one because of lockout).
Also, I agree with gunslinger, the way foy and Fedoruk have been playing make it hard for JL to pull them out of the lineup and put radio and boogey in - especially since fedoruk is able to fill the role of skater and aggressor.
I know he is not going to compete with the heavies like boogey can, but he’s willing to mix it up to stick up for his teammates.
To me, Radio has been pretty dismal the whole time here. Other than the first few games of last season with the “slovakian solution” line, he’s not been very effective at all. 9 pts with a -10 and 40 pims doesn’t do a whole lot to help get us to the next level. In 19 less games, Foy already has 8 pts and is +2 and is playing with enthusiasm.
Any good russians available out there? We haven’t had any of those for a while.
The games are also so that the Wild can show other teams what Foy can do.
I can’t imagine the decision to waive Moore when Koivu was ready was a last minute one. The Wild talked Moore up once Koivu started skating - possibly as a way to increase his trade value.
Teams know what Radio can do, there’s plenty of recent tape on him. If they want to shop Foy, it is hard to get any value for a guy who is a mainstay in the press box.
These games are more a showcase of Foy for other teams - DR and JL know what he can do.
I’d agree with AiH that the Moore waiver may have been late because they thought they were going to be able to make a trade. Giving Foy some ice time might make it easier to trade him if another roster move needs to be made.
I think that the wild were trying to move Moore, but when the Ducks couldn’t even get a late round draft pick for Ilya Bryzgalov it was like ice skating uphill to trade Moore. (or Radio)
masterton award winners
06 - selanne
07 - phil kessel
on the 07 winner:
Boston Bruins center Phil Kessel received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Diagnosed with testicular cancer in early December, the 19-year-od Kessel played a Dec. 9 game against New Jersey, knowing he would be admitted to the hospital for surgery on Dec. 12. He missed only 12 games before returning to Boston’s lineup
Huh, that was odd. I went to TSA’s website and NHL.com and I only saw the winners through ‘04… thanks for the info.
Mojo - I’m sure Alexei Yashin is ready to come back to North America.
Danny, I thought about that, but I don’t think it’s the case. I think it’s far more likely they’ll waive someone.
err not TSA, TSN
on Foy vs. Radio vs. Fedoruk vs. Boogey:
The bottom line is that if Radio comes in and plays well for a game or two suddenly everyone will be saying “Radio’s the answer, trade Foy” again.
We’re talking about guys who have to struggle to dress for the FOURTH line. Utterly replaceable (note that I did NOT include Shep on that list). So yes, you ride the hot hand, but if you have a surplus, then if one gets moved it’s no big deal.
The “close to a trade for Moore” reason for the waiver delay makes sense. However, I listend to the replay of Russo with Little Hartman last night and the Don said no one with the Wild had a reason so not sure if this wasn’t just an f’up. You would think DR would be OK disclosing that after the fact but who knows, Coach Childress or Fran Foley may be consulting the Wild in their spare time.
considering how F’d up things are at MLSE, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that someone (read: JFH) had told Riser he might be interested in trading something for Dom, but then didn’t get back to DR in time (possibly because he couldn’t convene the council of 23 or however many board members there are in TO) for Dom to otherwise end up on waivers to get Mikko in the Red Wings game.
oops “JFH” should obviously be “JFJ”
HNIC interviewed the almighty scotty bowman during their pregame on saturday and asked him about working for the leafs. I can’t remember now if it was bowman or a the commentator that said this but they likened his position to what colangelo does for the raptors. the difference is colangelo is in a better position because the board admits it knows nothing about basketball so he is free to do as he pleases. the board thinks they know hockey so bowman would be fighting them.
it sounds that for toronto to return to glory, if they ever had glory, new ownership would be key.
G* I heard Bowman told MLSE that he would ONLY come work for them if he got a Colangelo-type arrangement (ie, zero involvement from the board, total autonomy) - which makes sense if you’re anyone, but especially if you’re Scott Bowman.
That team is a shambles right now.
But those fans keep paying top dollar (loony?) to go watch a mediocre-at-best product. I don’t get it.
big card tonight. everyone in our division is playing. no bruins so i won’t get to gaze at their beautiful studio crew.
But those fans keep paying top dollar (loony?) to go watch a mediocre-at-best product. I don’t get it.
i’ve heard that remark about us wild fans.
What you heard is what i seem to remember hearing as well. they asked him if the board got together and offered him what he wanted if he would take it. he tap danced around it saying he doesn’t like to answer hypothetical questions and he is happy with the wings.
i’ve heard that remark about us wild fans.
well-played.
Green* - I think there is a 0% chance Marney would have gotten a job at NESN but I could be wrong.
But those fans keep paying top dollar (loony?) to go watch a mediocre-at-best product. I don’t get it.
You’re being generous. Mediocre?!?
what can I say, wafer? I’m a giver.
I just want to clarify that I, in no way, shape, or form am saying that Radio OR Foy are “the answer”, or that losing either one of them would severely hurt the team. I am just saying IF it comes down to it, Radio will probably be gone before Foy. Heck, both may be gone before the Trade Deadline - you never know, but I think Radio is first on the chopping block.
fair enough, TheGun.

Adam,
I’m a Wisconsinite, and the Wild are very popular over here in NW Wisconsin. Most folks around here gravitate towards the Twin Cities pro teams, since we have the Twin Cities TV stations. However the one exception is NFL, most people are Packer fans.
I have a handful of friends in my small town in St. Croix County, that are Wild season ticket holders, and there are others like me who are WCHA Final Five and Minn. Boys Hockey Tourney season ticket holders. An hour drive for good hockey is worth it.
hate to admit it adam but you are 100% correct.
2004 NHL Entry Draft:
How long will it be before the Wild has a worse draft than that one?
Thanks for sharing
I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
