Game 6 morning skate update: Nick Schultz in?

Posted on April 19th, 2008 – 12:17 PM
By Michael Russo

Look for Nick “Willis Reed” Schultz to play tonight.

Are you playing? “I think so.”

Funny story, the second he said that, he was called into a one-minute meeting with GM Doug Risebrough, who clearly told him, “Don’t tell the media.”

Too late. It was on the blog by the time he got back. The rest of the interview Schultz, whose missed the series thus far following an appendectomy only 12 days ago, was throwing in caveats, like if I play, etc, but he’s in.

I knew he was in when Chris Simon ran him through the wringer at the end of practice. He pounded him in a battle along the boards and Schultz survived.

Offically he is a game-time decision. Jacques says he wouldn’t even consider it if this wasn’t an elimination game. Don’t know whom he’d be in for, but I assume Sean Hill because Erik Reitz looked good.

I’ll tell you what, I’ve never seen the locker room so loose. And I mean that. They looked on edge and high-strung during the skate, and then Lemaire held a team meeting and it was like a different group.

The music was on, guys were dancing to the music, throwing the football around, etc.

Branko Radivojevic is definitely out. He didn’t skate and was limping with no knee brace on. I really think he’s got a sprained knee, which in normal situations is a month out if it’s not the most serious grade.

Matt Foy has been told he’s playing for Benoit Pouliot.

Prior to the skate, Monty Python’s “Always look on the bright side of life” was BLARING out of the Wild locker room this morning.

I don’t have confirmation that Marian Gaborik is strapped to a chair in front of the speakers, but I’ll find out.

I’m still laughing at that one. Minnesota Wild: The Musical. I could just see the guys locked in arms whistling to the chorus.

Todd Fedoruk is the man who was playing the song, I’m told by players.

On the Monty Python front, Laperriere reminds me of Sir Robin…

MINSTREL: Brave Laperriere ran away,
Laperriere: No!
MINSTREL: Bravely ran away, away.
Laperriere: I didn’t!
MINSTREL: When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled.
Laperriere: No!
MINSTREL: Yes, brave Laperriere turned about
Laperriere: I didn’t!
MINSTREL: And gallantly, he chickened out. Bravely taking to his feet,
Laperriere: I never did!
MINSTREL: He beat a very brave retreat,
Laperriere: All lies!
MINSTREL: Bravest of the brave, Laperriere.
Laperriere: I never!

Tass, how ’bout this (i used it on a previous thread about week ago)
And buggering off

ROFLMAO, Tasslehoff, great stuff.

Can anyone tell me why someone like Matt Foy isn’t playing instead of one of the enforcers? Foy has scored some clutch goals, that’s what they need now, not jersey tugging after the whistle.

Remember folks, the CLINCHING game is always the toughest to win. Should be very interesting this evening in the MILE HIGH city…

Russo said a few days ago that Schultz lost weight. I wonder how much.

Nick in New York says:

April 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

wow…wonder if Lappy spears him in the gut?

Seriously, though, I don’t see how this can hurt - asssuming he would only play if he can contribute (positively).

amazing info (MP reference). The stuff about Schultz is also good news.

Wow.

Schultz is definitely a gamer!

I suspect that anyone targeting him would not get another shift. Instigator or not.

It would point out what my complaints are with ‘agitators’ though.

Go Wild!

oh, and - let me draw a parallel here…
Game one, it was a fluke that we didn’t win here.
Game two, we win
Game three, we win
Game four, a paradox of effort
Game FIVE, it was a fluke that we didn’t win here.
Game six, …? we win?
Game seven, …? we win? Let’s hope it continues!

Someone on the Wild message board is saying that Foy will be in tonight. Pouliot and Simon.

Take that with a grain a salt. Though, the poster did offer to send $10 to anyone who didn’t believe him about Foy.

This certainly sheds a different light on the game tonight.

Naturally it is happening because I cannot see the game.

I guess it could be worse. The Wild could have been eliminated in 5… :P

Burns/Yoda
Johnsson/Schultz
Good Marty/Reitz

Ok, so I am basing my opinion on how Schultz looked at the end of the regular season and how Reitz played in one game but…

Doesn’t that defensive lineup look MUCH better than in game 4???

If Schultzie plays, I don’t know if we can expect too much, other than (hopefully) not getting as tired and making as many mistakes as Hill makes.

What is your quest?
To search for the holy grail! (of hockey.)

scrungemo says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Russo, if they don’t want the media to know (because then the Avs know), why would you hop on here and tell the world? I know you’re not employed by the Wild, but sheesh. how about doing a favor for the home team?

sunshine says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Be like Dater and throw out something stupid like Forsberg might not play in Game 4.

I knew that was not true because Dater doesn’t have much credibility and PF rested in the third period of Game 4.

Ramon says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Yes!

Please Lemaire, DO US THIS FAVOR AND BRING IN “SCHULTZI”.

One hit, maybe two and this guy is OUT for a long time and the Wild have to play the rest of the game with 5 tired D-men … and he will be hit! Thats for sure!

phil says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Wild RoadTripper says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Schultz coming back means HE thinks he’s ready to play, and the medical staff agrees. Of course, you all know what this means?

The Wild’s chances of winning just got a LOT better, hence the Monty Python routine in the room after morning skate.

“Spam-a-Lot! Spam-a-Lot! In far of France I heard your call…!” ;)

Wild RoadTripper says:

April 19th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Michael: I saw that game on TV when Willis Reed came back to play in the NBA playoffs. The crowd was definitely pumped at the Garden that night.

If Schultz helps get us to game 7, so will the ‘X’!

phil says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Brits’ sense of humor is jacked up, so you’re probably better off not “get”ing it. I only like maybe 15 minutes combined time in any particular MP movie..but those parts are damn funny.

The whole Schultzie thing has added another layer of drama and therefore just a little bit more nervous excitement I have going on.

You would think the Hockey Gods would see too it that this series goes 7. Especially after the last game. Where is the justice hockey Gods?

Wow guys and gals….rough day out here in CO that’s for sure. Just got my first sunburn of the year. Went out to lunch and CU is having their annual “Spring Football Game” Didn’t even know such a thing existed. Anyways onto the better story. Having lunch on the hill at Half-Fast on the patio and about 7-8 guys wearing Wild jerseys, NW Division Champs t-shirts, etc. walked up/in and started getting constantly heckled by everyone on the patio. Pretty harsh for fair-weather Avs fans/CU students. Anyway for some odd reason no one seemed to notice the Wild logo on my cap the whole time I was out there. Pretty funny stuff

Ramon- Yes Schultz will play and he will get hit. Mister Ramon, When I think about Forsberg playing with an injury and getting hit, he knows he will not get hit by a cheap shot because that is not the Wilds way. If I was Mr Schultz, I would be concerned about getting hit by a cheap shot because the AVs have a few loose Canons on the team, and a coach who does not have his team playing honest hockey

Dickie Dunn says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Dickie has seen some scenes from Monty Python but I would probably get about the same out of it as Phil mentioned above. 10-15 minutes of funny. I’m not ivesting 2 hours of time for 10 minutes of a return in funny. I’d much rather throw in Wedding Crashers or Bull Durham or Caddyshack or um, Slapshot.

I’m all about getting bang for my buck.

Dickie Dunn says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

What’s the Beav think Wally?

Love the Beav…

Beaver says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Good Old Wally I cant agree more ! You know I thought the AVs were an honest team, but they clearly are not !

We have heard you say Mr President, no no, I mean Wally, that the Wild would win this series if they lost game 5

I thought for a moment only a crazy idiot would make such a remark about losing a game being an advantage. I have come to believe your prediction Good Old Wally, and you are my hero !

I think the Wild will win, and the fans at the X for game 7 will be cheering for a team that will win the cup when they advance

The Beaver thinks that the AVs go nowhere if by some miracle they advance

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Uncultured thats what you are, simply uncultured… but thats alright, I think most of my friends don’t understand why I’m laughing when I we watch MP. I have a very dry sarcastic sense of humor so I get some of the jokes they don’t. Sorry Dickie but really not a Bull Durham fan I find Kevin Costner in any role squickey and that just ruins the movie for me. Now bang for my buck, yep Slapshot (duh) and any thing from the twisted mind of Kevin Smith.

Dickie Dunn says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Well Band, I also have a dry sarcastic sense of humor also. But it’s clearly an American dry sarcastic sense of humor. If that is uncultured, sign me up!

If the Avs aren’t going anywhere if they win we might as well win the next 2 and march on.

Rob Hull says:

Bandgeek - I like both Monty and Bull Durham. I’m not like a huge Kevin Costner fan but I won’t turn off the tv.
I like long, slow, wet kisses, Oh MY…

The Wild will win tonight and bring it back home to the X. So Boogie can score his first SCP goal. It will happen I have forseen it….

Cam says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

How long will it take the cheapshots Lapanzy Ass or McTeeth to make a run at Schultz?

If they do, I would expect the gloves to come off for Boogie. They can run, but they can’t hide.

That would be the ultimate display of poor sportsmanship.

Since all my predictions except the PMB OT winner have been incorrect, I just hope for a great game and a game 7.

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Uncultured is alright by me. I must be a bit uncultured as well, I am a huge Matt Stone/Trey Parker fan as well. I almost wet myself watching Team America I was laughing so hard. Think I might go take a nap. That way I’m not to tired for the game.

phil says:

April 19th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

You mention the Beav..and lo and behold there he is!! You see a win tonight?

SoCalWildFan says:

Scott says:

April 19th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

If Schultz can play that would be great. I hope they are covering their bases and carrying 7 tonight on defense. Nummi could play wing to start and if Schultz can’t play a lot of minutes or gets hurt, we still have 6 to finish the game.

I hate to dare predict a score in a hockey game but if dare try I see the game going like this Mr Phil

1st period Wild 3 to 0

2nd period Wild 4 the AVs 1

3rd period Wild 6 the AVs 2

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Two words about how funnily disturbing Team America is… Puppet Sex.

Good old Wally says:

April 19th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

You know Beav, before I forget. Dont forget that my prediction is that the Wild will get favors in this game from the refs. The Wild are owed ! I predict the Wild may even see a 5 on 3 advantage in the first period

phil says:

April 19th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Beav, I’m honored you singled me out for a reply…but(while I like your prediction) I was asking DD for his.

“Shave your ba**s?”

Kirk Wise says:

That’s funny Phil. I can see how you could make that mistake from a distance. Back when I first saw South Park back is ‘96 or ‘97 I kept my eye out for anything Trey, and Matt did. Obviously that one is more obscure since I believe it went straight to video.

“No, you can’t just call them the Naughty Twins. They’re the A**f**k Twins. Why would you call them The Naughty Twins when they get f**ked in the a** all the time?”

“Well, that’s pretty naughty.”

“Jesus Joe!”
“Where!?!?!?!”

Aaron in Houston says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

That is exactly the kind of blog I needed going into the game tonight! I’m listening to “always look on the bright side of life” right now!

I got some Minnesota Wild Rice Soup on the stove. My Wild Fight to the End cup is out filled with beer, now time to get the North Stars jersey on and the Wild hat out.

Marian Gaborik is my new computer background. I think I’ve done all I can from Houston. Let’s go boys!

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

“I don’t want to sound like a queer or nothin’, but you got a sweet a**.”
“Uhh, thanks?”
“No problem man.”

Or one of the Mr’s favorites.
“I am Sancho.”

We aim to please Aaron.

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

OMG! Laughing so hard!! Man I love that movie.

The Wild are going to go “Hamster Style” on the Avs tonight!!

Bandgeek: If you’ve got a lot of pent-up energy, I could use a little housekeeping help. :P (Fat chance!)

AustinTXwildfan says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

WRT, that’s crazy. That was a great game in the Wild’s favor. We actually saw that the game is on Vs. so we found a place that has the game! I will be watching for sure with my Gabby t-shirt on!

Bandgeek, Orgazmo is fantastic. “Stunt C*ck!”

“The base was blown up by a fat socialist weasel.”
I think that may be one of the best lines from Team America.

Wild RoadTripper says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Bandgeek: I guess asking for a clean hose was a bit much. After all, I was the one that undid it. just trying to help you channel that energy into something other than South Park jokes! (not that they’re not really good..)

Aaron in Houston says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Good stuff guys! There seems to be a good atmosphere in the locker room and on the blog.

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

That was a great one Band. If I HAD to pick a favorite it would have to be Tim Robbins.

“Let me explain to you how this works. You see the corporations finance Team America, and then Team America goes out….and the corporations sit there in their….in their corporation buildings, and….and, and, they’re all corporationy….and they make money.

phil says:

Man, just got done working out and I’m still pumped..Austin, you know where Allison Stokke is at? I need to take the edge off. ;)

great lines all from Matt and Trey!

If the Mr. thinks we’re disturbed, what’s he think of puppet “sex”, Band?

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

The Mr just popped the Team America soundtrack in. So I ask this.. “If you don’t put in your buck o’ five, who will?”

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

The 93X guys re-did the Team America theme song.

“Wild! F**k yeah!!”

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Kirk… “Matt Damon.”

Phil, hun, he’s just as bad if not worse. He just likes to point out when I’m acting disturbed, he thinks it’s funny when I get twitchy and start quoting movies and TV shows. He knows it’s really bad when I whip out the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (show, not movie) quotes and thats usually when I’m cut off.

phil says:

Love that one too Band.

I’m a big fan of Joss Whedon also. I have a collection going of Buffy, and Angel seasons on DVD.

Bandgeek says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Joss is cool. He did Firefly (which became the movie Serenity), unfortunately only lasted one season. I have that and every season of Buffy, but couldn’t stomach Angel till the final season when Spike was on it.

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

Awesome Phil. Kim Jong Il is the star of that movie.

“Who’s responsibra for browing up Panama?”

If you go to the top the Don has changed a few things, Foy in for Benny the Pool Boy, and fridge was the one playing the Monty Python Song.

Kirk Wise says:

Yup. I have the Firefly season, and Serenity on DVD. Good stuff.

SoCalWildFan says:

I think during the pre-game skate Boogie should stop and center ice, turn to the Av’s side and say “Respect my authoriTIE”

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Not a bad move on Foy IMO. Good to have a high motor guy in with fresh legs who is a little more responsible defensively.

I see shades of the final Calgary game in this one.

Lemmiwinks_ahp says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

So also on a hockey related note…hopefully Gabby the Great will see what I saw when browsing on WildTV to get pumped for the game. 4/5 of his goals in the infamous game came from him right at the top of the goal crease. Anyone in here good at Telepathy and think Gabby is? Hummmm…..Drive the net, Drive the net, Drive the net….Hummmm….

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

NINY, we’re not on here until 9 CST

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Keep the faith Nick. They don’t drop the puck until 10 or 12 after 9 Central.

SoCalWildFan says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Im with NINY cause it’s vs. for me tonight. End this thing in regulation, habs or bruins doesn’t matter, just end it.

As for the avs: “I hate those guys, I really hate those guys.”

Kirk Wise says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

OK Russoville. I have to get the kids settled down before the game.

The boys are going to be so energized with Schultzy back. Tonight we solve JT. Stay out of the box. Lappy, and the rest of the usual suspects will be extra chippy tonight. We can do this. We WILL do this.

FIGHT TO THE END!!

It is amazing how every Minnesota team has a bunch of homers coming out of the wood work at playoff time with very little insight to the respective sport. This is especially true with the local media = Sid, CommonMan and the like… How can you hang your hopes on one person - Schultz to be your savior when he will be skating for 20 minutes at a mile high after recovering from major surgery. Good luck with that Schultzy…..Carl, Ziggy, Glen and now Craig need to understand that you must spend the dough to compete. They must start with surrounding themselves with intelligent people in their front office. Salaries for sub-prime players will always give you the same great effort with the same results… looking forward to next year. Go Avs…until we meet again..that would be draft day!

Nick in New York says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Bs tie it…Double FCUK!!

Lemmiwinks_ahp says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

NINY: that was a pretty slick goal though…Kessel has been money for the B’s so far. Found a new beer out here recently…not to aim it at you in particular :-), but it’s Great Divide’s Samurai Ale…its an unfiltered ale that’s brewed with rice/barely. Pretty damn good!

Nick in New York says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Someone: which is it? “spend the dough” or “pub-prime players” with their “great effort with the same results”.

Go away.

Nick in New York says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

re-he-heally, Lemmi…I might have to give it a try…sounds good.

How’s the weather out there today?

GreenStar says:

April 19th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

first this

very little insight to the respective sport

then this

Craig need to understand that you must spend the dough to compete

and it is who that has very little insight?

Lemmiwinks_ahp says:

nice…attaboy…those first “spring days” are pretty sweet. In NYC, those days = lots of making sure there are still low-cut tops in the wardrobe, makes for great, um, people watching, if you know what I mean.

"Someone That Knows" says:

April 19th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

nick…Did you say that with a grain belt in your hand and your homer hanky being used as a coaster…MN needs to spend the dough and not on sub-prime players….Goal Avs.1-0..like I said cya at the draft table

Max says:

April 19th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

WOW…nobody said it’d be easy. That was really a horrible PP and then to give up a shortie at the end of it. Time to buckle up or get out the golf clubs tomorrow

"Someone That Knows" says:

April 19th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

nick…..Your thug, Boogy, is looking to throw the game for you by putting us on the power play all night…He must have $ on the Avs. Watch…he will be in the box for over 10 minutes by the end of the night.
