Wild statement on Marian Gaborik’s hip

Posted on April 24th, 2008 – 12:08 PM
By Michael Russo

The Wild issued a statement in response to the Slovakia National Team announcing Gaborik won’t be playing in the world championships due to a hip injury:

“Marian has a hip deficiency attributable to overuse. He will not participate in the world championships. No treatment decision will be made until Marian undergoes further medical consultation.”

Russo note: The Wild doesn’t think there’s anything serious wrong with Gaborik, so don’t worry. I should also point out he told us he wasn’t playing in the world championships BEFORE his physical, so read into that what you want.

In other news, Niklas Backstrom (although Wild has not been told this officially) is expected to play for the Finns, while Mikko Koivu is committed.

Brent Burns was added to Canada’s roster.

Petr Kalus is in for the Czechs (I got an email that he was cut, but that was news to Wild assistant GM Tom Lynn). Demitra, Rolston and Johnsson have said they’re not playing.

In other news, the Central Scouting Service has put out its final rankings for the 2008 Draft.

Minnetonka’s Jake Gardiner is ranked 23rd among North American skaters and Roseau’s Aaron Ness is ranked 27th. Eastview’s Corey Fienhage is ranked 36th, Cloquet’s Justin Jokinen is 54th, Shattuck-St. Mary’s Derek Stepan is 58th, Shattuck-St. Mary’s David Carle (brother of San Jose Sharks’ Matt Carle) is 60th, Shattuck-St. Mary’s David Toews (brother of Chicago Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews) is 79th, Brainerd’s Drew Olson is 102nd, Edina’s Anders Lee is 112th, Burnsville’s Tyler Barnes is 114th, Edina’s Marshall Everson is 117th, Intl. Falls’ Jake Youso is 152nd, Shattuck-St. Mary’s Alexander Fallstrom is 159th, Rosemount’s Luke McManus is 161st, Shattuck-St. Mary’s Jordan Murray is 173rd, Burnsville’s Jake Hendrickson is 174th, Edina’s Joe Gleason is 178th and Anoka’s John O’Neill is 194th.

I don’t see any Minnesotans on the North American goalie list.

To be preemptive, if I forgot anyone, please send an email and I’ll add. It doesn’t mean I — or the Star Tribune – hate your kid’s high school. I just missed it :)

Dino Ciccarelli-owned Sarnia Sting’s Steven Stamkos is of course No. 1.

———————————————

Thursday afternoon addition:

I’m at a coffee shop (shocking, eh?) catching up on returning all (OK, most) the emails I have not returned in the last couple weeks.

I got three emails so similar that it makes me wonder if this has been a topic of curiosity lately. I’ve been so busy the last month, I haven’t been keeping up with the blog comments, so I figured I’d clear it up if this has been a long-time observation.

The question I got from three different readers: Why is Rolston quoted so much more than Gaborik? The readers wondered if Gaborik — the captain — was avoiding the press, or if Rolston was more apt to talk to the press, or does the media dislike Gaborik or something?

There’s a simple explanation really. One big reason Gaborik’s been able to keep so healthy this season is because he’s so cognizant toward taking care of his groins well before and well after practices and games.

So basically, unless Gaborik makes a huge impact in a game, Rolston usually gets quoted more often because he’s moseying around the locker-room area.

Gaborik usually begins treatment in the trainer’s room immediately after games unless requested (Wild media relations guys ask the beat writers at all home games which players we definitely need).

The way deadlines are these days, if we don’t ask Gaborik to stay immediately after, we don’t have the time  to wait out Gaborik unless absolutely necessary. But trust me, Gaborik has never declined to talk to us that I know of.

If you’re observing Rolston getting quoted more, it’s basically because the reporters have gotten into the habit of letting Gaborik go do his treatment.

Nothing here, really, to the Gabby situation.

Please just rest and stay healthy Gabby.

I too am glad that it isn’t a serious injury.

Thanks for the update, Russo.

From last thread:

Claire, I do not think your dismissing the comparable records is valid.

It is all relative! There is more parity now, even before this last season.

Against the North Stars record there were fewer teams but also were not Russian and European imports on a wholesale basis in the NHL either.

And, I believe hockey has grown substantially since then in the USA and there are far more and better US players on rosters.

Actually Nabokov IS from Kazakhstan.

Wallshot says:

At least his birthplace is now part of Kazakhstan. But maybe he doesn’t count himself as being from there, as it would have been part of the USSR then.

joeythelemur says:

April 24th, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Fair enough. His NHL profile says USSR, but I’ll stand corrected.

joeythelemur says:

Right, they’re both from Kamenogorsk. nhlnumbers lists Antropov from Kaz and Nabokov from Russia.

Back to TV. I have always been of the opinion that hockey doesn’t translate to TV very well because of the almost constant action during play and then the 20 minutes of fluff during intermission. US sports fans are used to not needing to pay 100% attention to a game and still getting to ’see’ most of the action. Basketball - you get what 75 baskets a game to see? So what if you miss one. Football and baseball - you get 20 seconds of action and then a minute of wasted time.

Hockey isn’t like that. If you spend time during play talking or get up to go to the bathroom you may miss something that makes the entire game. Then, when the intermission rolls around you’ve got 20 minutes to flip to another channel and forget to go back.

sunshine says:

April 24th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

How about who the Wild draft with their first pick?

Or how about making bets on the date when the Wild will re-sign Rolston?

This is really sad.

sunshine says:

April 24th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Goody: in basketball, all you really need to see is the last five minutes which can be dragged on for 30 minutes.

Nick in New York says:

so, like, is this going to be one of those things where JL says “Gaby you got to come back on D if you want to get de ice time.”

Hockey junkies going through withdrawl…it’s not a pretty sight!

Personally, I’m looking forward to being in front of the TV tonight at 6:00, just to hear them sing “O, Canada” in Bell Center. Seeing that crowd, hearing the song half in French, half in English, is one of my favorite things in hockey.

Then, half an hour later, I’m going to enjoy Detroit’s disembowling of the Avs.

joeythelemur says:

April 24th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Is Detroit selling out the Joe yet?

Iceman says:

April 24th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

Goody, does the big screen tv’s make the game better to watch?

ps - the North Star media guide lists only 47 televised games for those who wish to return to “the good old days”!

Considering the North Stars record for those people who are offering differing opinions than mine.

There are factors that should have worked to the advantage of more North Star W’s against opponents too.

It is true that against the Original Six the sledding would have been hard. Except the North Stars had a winning record against both Detroit and Toronto.

1) The Expansion Six teams formed their own division. I cannot recall whether they always played a balanced schedule or not. The North Stars had a losing record against all the teams but the Kings. (And, possibly the Seals/Barons)

2) The North Stars had a losing record looking collectively at all the expansion teams during their time here. Expansion included the Sabres, Islanders, Flames, Canucks, Devils, Capitals.

3) Taken collectively, the North Stars had a losing record against the infusion of WHA teams Jets, Oilers, Whalers and Nordiques.

If you consider there are no franchises newer than the Wild, I cannot see how there can be much serious criticism of the direction and progress of the team by DR and his staff.

NiNY: The Wild lost in the first round again; have dropped 9 of 13 home playoff games and the roster looks primed for a major shakeup this summer. I don’t have any shame left.

On a side note; Liriano looked like a money f*%$ing a football on the mound this afternoon. Didn’t last an inning and the Twince are down 6-1 in the first.

Toivo, if that theorum is 56% accurate, that is statisically about the same as a coin flip!

Claire,
Actually, I did the math in my head and got it wrong. It’s actually 65% correct (64 of 98 series correct). Your statement about 56% being about the same as a coin flip is incorrect however. I wrote a program to pick winners in these 98 series by coin flip, for 10,000 tests. Eventually you get to a mean of 49 correct (50%) with a standard deviation of 4.8. In other words, 56% is still better than one standard deviation more accurate than random.

65% is quite good, especially considering how simple the calculation is. Only 17 times in my coin flip program out of 10k, did it pick >=64/98 series correctly.

Interssting that the Slovakian National Team is saying that Gaborik has hip ‘deficiencies’. According to whose standards? (Depends on whom you ask, yes, but…) Sounds more like the Slovaks are trying to get back at Gaborik in the only way they can for playing an entire season in the NHL.

I would trust the Wild doctors more than I would the Bratislava braintrust. :P

Still not finished in my efforts to get the Wild to move the Aeros to Des Moines. I went to the AHL site and found these attendance figures fo the last 3 years. If Houston has 2 million populace and Des Moines has 600,000 (which I think is a little high). It sure looks that the fan base in Des MOines would more than support a decent AHL team. This years numbers are down due to two main reasons: 1) Des Moines did not have a decent team this year and 2) once the announcement of the pending move to Dallas came out people lost interest in the team - it was like they are turning their backs on us so why should we support them. I know personally I tried to go to two or three games a month, but once the move was announced I only went once.

Houston Des Moines

07/08 6,280 3,789
06/07 6,422 4,818
05/06 5,800 5,156

On another note, we did make a great addition to the Des MOines hockey faithful this week. JP Praise was named new head coach of the Des Moines USHL team.

Kevin, where’ve you been?

I wanted to ask, how do you feel about the Rangers this round?

Will you look at that! Someone solved the impenetrable Jose Theodore…..

Goalieguy says:

That Montreal game was one for the ages…Down early, fight back, tie it with 28 seconds left and win in the first minute of OT….Going to be a fun, fun series to watch.

The Flyers are not a team I respect. There have been associated with dirty play since they came into the league.

Why didn’t Theodore have a game like that last week?

WildinATX says:

Apparently he wasn’t sick last week.

I blame it on the hockey gods. Or, alternatively, the hockey gods have smiled on us, and will make us stronger next year. And by stronger, I mean in the SCP finals.

Ms.Conduct says:

*sigh* Aeros lose again. So, I’m pretty much counting us out of the playoffs. It will be easier to take tomorrow if I prepare myself today.

BUT… Pouliot played as well as I’ve seen in a while. Credit where it’s due. He even got in a fight, threw some good hard checks. I bet he got more hits than Clutterbuck tonight. And he played his game. Got some pretty near-breakaways. If his passes had been a little more controlled, I think we could have gotten some decent chances off of him.

I hope DR is here noticing Marco Rosa’s play. That kid is dripping with hustle, NEVER gives up on a puck (unlike Kelly who is happy to foist it off on the other team). Not sure if he’s a Wild signing, but he needs to be, pronto.

Iceman says:

Ms. Conduct:

I was listening to the radio feed until my quicktime refused to acknowledge the url but there were several turnovers by the defensemen.

And the stats of 40 turnovers in the first game blew my mind… is that even right?

Ms.Conduct says:

April 25th, 2008 at 12:00 am

Uh yeah. And I suspect there were even more turnovers tonight. This team really has us on our heels. I feel like the guys are trying but getting frustrated because the hogs are all over them like flies on shit.

Not Hockey news but…. Today is the Mr’s 30th birthday. I didn’t get him anything yet, I’m a bad wife. I’ve know what I was going to get him for a few weeks now but just never made it to the store. Guess I’ll have to stop and pick up his present on the way home from work. I am taking him out to dinner, someplace nicer than Jimmy John’s or Culver’s, his choice.

Nick in New York says:

April 25th, 2008 at 7:37 am

thanks for reminding me, Band. I get my wife a gift at the end of the Wild’s season, ostensibly for being such a patient and giving “hockey” widow during the season.

I had so far forgotten about it for this year, though.

I’m sure she’d never mention it, but now I feel bad I haven’t done it yet.

Ms.Conduct…you’re right about Taureans…my b’day was Tuesday. The BIG 5-0.

Notice last night how Detroit shredded the Avs D and the other-worldly JT looked more like his old self?

Also notice how quicky Detroit responded on the scoreboard?

But then again, there is a HUGE difference between Holmstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Cleary, Franzen, Filppula and Gaborik, PMB, Rolston, Koivu, Fridge and Demitra.

These words just do NOT seem to go together:

Rosie and ass-less.

GreenStar says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:01 am

two questions.

Marty was apparantly injured in the first game of the series but played thru it. anyone know what the injury was?

i remember after the 03 series half the team went in for some sort of surgery.

is foppa’s “groin” issue really an issues with his wonky foot?

Lapper says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:04 am

When the North Stars were ripped away from me as youth, I turned to the Canadiens of the mid 90’s as my team. Had a huge Roy poster on the wall. (Bure also) Now that Wild are tuning up the Golf Sticks and PMB’s handicap gets lower…I pledge my cheering to the Blue-Blanc-et Rouge!

If #10 were a thoroughbred, would he have been “put down” by now?

If Montreal and Detroit make the SCF will they make sure the games start later than 4 pm Pacific time?

And lastly… I seem to recall raising this question before on this blog….but, isn’t the whole point of Chaps to be ass-less?

GO HABS GO!!!

Missy says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:08 am

Although I prefer the Red Wings I think the Avs have a good chance. A sick Jose Theodore gave up 4 goals..but Budaj was fabulous. I don’t know why they put in Jose if he was so ill–because they almost did it last night. And without Forsberg. As for those who do not like his whining etc..I have to say..we would have loved his ability to open himself up and create opportunities when everyone was on him. And people are constantly on him. That is a talent that I wish other players had…

Missy says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:10 am

And Yes..Forsberg’s groin injuries are due to his foot.

kj says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:17 am

Well, they’d better find a way to make him healthy again. No Forsberg = no 3rd round…

I have forseen it

GreenStar says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:17 am

Forsberg’s groin injuries are due to his foot.

if i wasn’t clear, is what they are saying is a groin problem for foppa really his foot. during the playoffs, injuries are never what the appear to be.

Aaron in Houston says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:20 am

If #10 were a thoroughbred, would he have been “put down” by now?

That is a great question Lapper. Is there an equine wing to the Mayo hospital that Dr. Rosenrosen can consult with?

HockeyDude says:

April 25th, 2008 at 9:42 am

Looks like Houston will follow the Wild as a one and done playoff team. Yeah, that Doug Risebrough has really built a great franchise. So tell me, when we lose our free agents, who in Houston has the talent to pick up the slack. Looking at their roster, I would say good old Doug Risebrough doesn’t have alot of quality options. Next year will be very interesting for the new owner.

2 more Minnesotan’s to add the CSS list.

Danny Kristo 37 US NTDP (played at Eden Prairie HS 1 year)

Nick Larson 52 Waterloo USHL (played at Eastview and St. Thomas)

Aaron in Houston says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:05 am

There are just seven organizations that had both their NHL and AHL team make the playoffs. Minnesota is one of those seven, that should count for something HockeyDude.

Six organizations didn’t reach the playoffs at the NHL or AHL level (FLA and BUF share the Rochester Americans, EDM, STL, NYI and TB).

Speaking of the AHL, Ryan Potulny scored at the 2:58 mark of the 5th OT to give the Philadelphia Phantoms the win over the Albany River Rats last night. The game lasted 5 hours and 38 minutes.

The Phantoms put 101 shots on net and Albany’s goalie Michael Leighton made 98 saves to get the loss.

Since we’re on the topic of D&D being unquestionably the worst broadcast team in professional hockey, if not all of sports, I have found somebody who may at least be in the team picture for worst broadcasters. Don’t know his name, but I was watching NHL On The Fly last night. There are two gentlemens who do the show. The one in question, if you are looking at the TV, sits on the right. He is 100 PER-F*&%ING CENT GOD AWFUL. He’s not Greenlay awful, but he is really, really, really, bad.

I'm Happy says:

Noticed that Jose Theodore was pulled from Game 1 of round 2 with Detroit last night.

As I mentioned last week, the guy is the reason that Colorado moved on and the Wild went home (he played very well against us) but as was the case all season long, we made goalies look really really good!

Hockeydad says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:12 am

Happy, I didn’t see the game, but I hear that Jose supposed to have been sick last night. Might explain his performance.

Aaron in Houston says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:25 am

DB - what don’t you like about that guy? He seems to provide pretty good commentary and break downs of film. His appearance and voice/mannerisms might not be top shelf but his opinions are usually quite accurate.

El Gato says:

Wow!

GreenStar says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:38 am

Huh. So much for HIPPA.

from my contracting days at a local medical insurer, I don’t think it is a HIPPA violation for a patient in the waiting room to tell anyone who they recognized there, unless the office announced who #10 was.

El Gato says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:40 am

Adam, it sucks to have a .970 save pct for the night and still lose! Funny that Potulny got the goal, since Gophers are usually known for shooting more at goalies than trying to shoot around them from my experience.

Adam says:

April 25th, 2008 at 10:48 am

El Gato - your acurate comment made me look - Ryan had 11 shots last night, one player put up 17 and another had 15. Surprisingly, neither were former Gopehers!
