Gaborik undergoes hip surgery

Posted on May 2nd, 2008 – 4:27 PM
By Michael Russo

Marian Gaborik underwent “successful minor arthroscopic surgery on his right hip joint “this morning in Vail, Colorado.

The Wild sent Gaborik to Dr. Marc Philippon, one of the world’s leading orthopaedic hip surgeons, who performed the surgery to repair a torn labrum and to relieve some impingement in Gaborik’s right hip.

After a postseason examination and consultation with team doctors, the Wild and Gaborik decided immediate surgery would provide relief and ensure he is ready for the start of training camp.

He will remain in Colorado for his initial rehabilitation and is expected to return to the Twin Cities in one to two weeks to continue his treatment.

The Wild thinks this was a minor thing and says it’s something he didn’t complain about during the playoffs. Although, Doug Risebrough says he did know that Gaborik complained earlier this season about a pinch in his hip.

I’ve actually talked with Philippon a couple of times before for stories I’ve done. He used to be based in Pittsburgh and is the doctor that always took care of Mario Lemieux during his years of hip problems.

Risebrough thinks Gaborik will stay in Minnesota for most of the summer for treatment.

Gabby, step away from the F1 racing simulator!

Actually, Mediacom cable goes off the air maybe four times a year too.

So, Ms Cunduct and Lapper, can we assume that if our Texas ECHL team is looking for a new home, and Des Moines is looking for a replacement team for the franchise that Dallas is moving to Texas, there would be a chance for a match to make our Iowa pal happy?

Or, is the level of play too different?

From the end of the last thread, now RIP.

What happens to the players such as Khudobin?

I feel a twinge of guilt for thinking that Gabby and the Wild were putting out the “hip deficiency” so that he can miss the Worlds. Now, it’s a little serious than before even though they say its minor.

Gabby is still a young guy, only 26. He has gone through two surgeries already - sports hernia and hip. Just worries about these athletes, that’s all.

I did some googling.

Labrum tears in the hip are not serious, but they are difficult to diagnose, and it’s very possible that this has had something to do with Gabby’s groin trouble as well.

Complications from this kind of surgery are rare and the expected time for returning back to full throttle is 12 weeks. Should be no problem, and could mean that he’ll be back better than ever. :-)

Claire says:

Just like the Wild did when their Louisiana franchise folded, they’ll find another ECHL team with which to sign an affiliation. Wild need to make some interesting goaltending decisions to make this year. Remember they let Johan Holmqvist go for nothing.

Good to see that Gaborik will stay in Minnesota for most of the off-season.

Hopefully toivo is right; that Gaborik will be back better than ever…

Tell Gopher Peter Kennedy about how rare the complications from the labrum surgery are, cost him two Gopher seasons and likely and chance at a minor league career.

I would guess Dobin will be in Houston next year. He proven all he needs to in the E and it’s time to test his mettle at the next level as the #2 in Houston. I’m guessing Barry is gone, though that makes me sad. He’s a fun goalie.

He should do fine recharging in MN. Especially if he lays off the racing simulators. And trains when he can.

Surgery huh? I too thought he was just trying to get out of playing in the World Championships too. I really was not thrilled with that decision since I was planning on getting a Slovakia Throwback jersey with his number on it too.

ATX is home now but we’re now “discussing” video games …

Stoned on the Breakaway says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 1:00 am

Matt Birk of the Vikings had a labrum tear a couple years ago didn’t he? Sat out most of a season. Never regained his skating stride and ended any chance of a hockey career I’m told. That and the laws of physics that would be violated when trying to move 350+ pounds around on ice. BTW that Gill on the Pens looks like he has the size of Andre the Giant. Boogaard size with more talent by the looks of it.

Stoned on the Breakaway says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 1:07 am

Hal Gill 6′7″ 250lbs. Nearly 800 games with the Bruins and the Leafs. See what happens with the crappy scheduling. I had no clue who this east sider was.

Kevin in PA says:

WildinATX says:

Yeah, well we like to debate the various aspects of video games. Tonight we discussed the pros and cons of GTA IV.

We’re both for it, but we both think it should have an adults only rating.

Not that interesting of a debate, actually.

Kevin in PA says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 1:43 am

Unless it’s strip debating, where you each take off a piece of clothing each time one of you loses an argument. That would make things interesting.

WildinATX says:

So, do you spend any time in Pitt other than to see games?

WildinATX says:

I ask because I am wondering if you know my friends’ band. They play a lot of the local festivals.

WildinATX says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 2:32 am

Or, alternatively, apparently my friend there is looking for a new home for a puppy, so if you’re interested I can set you up.

Kevin in PA says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 2:36 am

Or perhaps not so lucky from the sounds of things.

Nah, I don’t go to the city much beyond hockey games. I don’t like driving around there very much. I swear I can’t go anywhere in this area (SW PA) without running into some kind of construction.

I also can’t say I’m looking for a puppy at the moment either.

WildinATX says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 2:38 am

That’s too bad. This one is a very cute 3 year old.

And I can’t blame you with Pitt and the construction. They should be world renouned (sp?) with their ability to construct roads in the crappiest way possible.

Anyway, it’s to bed for us.

Go PENS!

Kevin in PA says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 2:42 am

Claire says:

Hal Gill and Brian Rolston used to be a killer one-two punch on the Bruins’ power play and penalty kill. I actually thought the Wild may look at Gill after acquiring Rolston but he languished in Toronto after the lockout.

Kevin in PA says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 11:43 am

Hal Gill used to get power play time? Wow.

Claire says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Maybe it was just PK when Rolston used to get all those shortie points. Jagr says Gill is the player who he hated to play against the most, the player who played against him the best, and frustrated him the most.

Will the Wild make the playoffs next year? If not, should Risebrough be fired? What about Lemaire? The more I look at the Wild’s prospects for next year, the more I feel the team will again have a worse record that the year before. Risebrough has not improved the team at all recently and is now coming up with excuses for next year’s performance.

todd hansen says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 2:58 pm

I’d be ok with Risebrough and Lemaire leaving right now. Infuse some new, fresh blood/attitude over on West 7th. Please dont hire Mike Ramsey though. Just more of the same. Goaltending is mediocre on its best days. ! forawrd who is a consistent goal scorer. One and done in ‘09 again.

Iceman says:

Musical GM’s and musical coaches?

HOpefully all of you are as competent in your careers as you demand from the Wild staff?

sunshine says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Which other coach would you bring in?

GMs might be easier to find but coaches are difficult.

todd hansen says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I guess you Wild fans are satisfied with this product. No one’s asking for musical coaches. Just one that hasn’t had the game pass him by post lock out era. I see Toronto has lost interest in DR as well. I’d also like to think I’m well above mediocrity in my career. Whereas Mr Risebrough toils in it.

Kevin in PA says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Yeah, Gill’s always been a thorn in Jagr’s side. He doesn’t have much (ok, any) mobility. I’ve lovingly dubbed him Fleetfoot.

sunshine says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 7:18 pm

I am not satisfied but I am also not ready to kick out JL and DR.

I think you just have look at the landscape out there and there really isn’t anyone much better than JL. DR and JL are ranked high in their positions. Would I rather have Holland over DR, of course. Will we get him, no.

We could always take a chance on an up and coming GM or head coach but not at the same time.

Bandgeek says:

Claire says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 10:18 pm

There are plenty of great coaches in the AHL. They are just now finally getting some respect. Look at Tippett, Boudreau, Stevens and others, they’ve done well and are finally being considered over the same old coaching retreads. But the Wild won’t need to consider that for another two years in my opinion, after the 2009-2010 season is when Jacques retires for good I think.

Thanks for the sympathy Kevin, and for your sake I hope the Pens do well.

todd hansen says:

May 4th, 2008 at 9:41 am

Why is everyone over hyping Koivu? Has he ever averaged anywhere near a point a game in his career? If you were to put him and Gabby on the open market, Gabby would command far more than Koivu. That’s because he is a rarity in todays NHL. Someone who can score goals. Get the guy some linemates and he wont go goal-less for 4-5 games at a time. Heck Crosby would struggle a bit skating with Fedoruk and some of the other talent-less slugs JL had out with him. I know it’s never a fair comparison but I always try and compare todays Wild players with some of the old North Stars players. I’d compare Koivu (on his best night) with a Dave Gagner. Who was a nice player for 5-6 yrs. So if he can put up numbers similar to Gagner’s I’d be more than safisfied. So far I haven’t seen any of that yet on a consistent basis. Gabby is the face of the franchise and needs to be back beyond ‘08-’09.

Iceman says:

May 4th, 2008 at 10:28 am

For toddhansonsays: Your opinion is different than mine on a lot of things.

I am not sure what is served by comparison of two fine player assets the Wild has?

Koivu is important to the Wild in all phases of the game and is on the ice during any situation from beginning to end. Koivu makes all of his linemates better regardless who he is playing with.

Gabby makes scores happen. But, as you say, “he needs the best linemates”!

Hockey is the ultimate team game.

sunshine says:

May 4th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Koivu and Gabby are very much needed on this team. They offer different dimensions to the game. The Wild is not as of a good team without Koivu or Gabby.

Gabby brings that added offense that can help tip the scales. Without Koivu, the team struggled on faceoffs and with the center position because some had to play out of position.

Teammates should not anoint someone the “franchise”. Let the media and the fans do that. Everyone is equal on the team. Like I stated earlier, each player has their role to play and if they each do what they are suppose to do, the team will win.

Suddenly everyone is heaping high praise on an ordinary player..Koivu. Why did this all start? Love his tenacity. Lacks size, and scoring/playmaking abilities. No doubt he is one of our top 3-4 forwards. Can skate on a PP or PK. Yes godd face off guy. Unfortunately our only one. Would have been an all star in the GO GO ’80’s if played back then. This franchise needs to develope another goal scorer. When was the last time we did that? We all realize goal scorer’s are still at a premium in thoday’s game. Let’s get a few more.

DontBfooled says:

May 4th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Hey Russo, nice commentary on CCO radio this morning….and I could not agree with you more. The Wild management definitely did NOT make the right moves to improve the team this year…and they are definitely could be in a world of hurt this upcoming year. No help in Houston, and with Risebrough not proving he understands the free agent market, it could be a long year for the Wild next season. Again, thanks for going on CCO this morning and adding your insight.

Kevin in PA says:

May 4th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

It was Malkin, and everyone in the arena was surprised I think. The net had come off its moorings in the Pens zone, and the ref in the zone saw it, but the Pens’ Kris Letang had possession of the puck and was skating up ice, so the ref let the play go on (and I’ve seen this happen in other games). I think the reasoning (don’t know if there’s a rule that concerns this situation) is that as soon as the puck was played towards the dislodged net, the play would be whistled dead. Pretty huge break to say the least.

sunshine says:

May 4th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

I don’t know why you think DR doesn’t understand the UFA market. Hey made his most expensive move in 2006 in the UFA market. The Wild was one of a few who actually made a splash that year.

And I think the general consensus on this blog is that the Wild would have been foolish to delve too much into the UFA market in the early years because they hadn’t developed enough to warrant going after big names.

Could he have done more last summer? Yes, he could have but he might have been hampered by Fernandez’s contract. He didn’t move Manny until July 1st. As you know, most of the top UFA were probably gone at that time as announcements are fast and furious on that day. He went after the positions we needed, he just hired the wrong people ie Sean Hill. In order to get good players, you have to pony up money and DR might not have the dough to do it last year as we were only about $3 million from the cap.

This summer, I am expecting a splash in the UFA market. We need a defensemen, a goal scorer, and a center.

sunshine says:

May 4th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

And something to chew on: if Gillies and Pouliot make the team next year and Bouchard is re-signed, the Wild will have all but one of their #1 picks in the lineup.

sunshine says:

May 4th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Forgot to add: also assuming that Gabby is not traded during the summer because he signed an extension.

Iceman says:

May 4th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

I agree with your assessment sunshine.

For all those who can’t swallow Thelen, I counted the #1 draft choices on the Wild team right now. It is an impressive number.

DR is doing as good a job as anyone can expect. It gets to the point where bad luck or absence of good luck makes the difference.

But, if the Wild continue as they have in their short past we will drink from the Cup.

I am an equal opportunity cleaning the ice. I don’t see the union guys dressed in skimpy outfits, though that might be scary.

Adam says:

You would think with the number of hockey cheerleaders in this state that the Wild would add them at some point.

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:07 am

This is the type of game that Dallas will win. San Jose’s been dictating play, at least in the second overtime, so that means the Stars will score on, as Adam said, a counterattack or some brief, possibly flukey possession.

sunshine says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:08 am

Triple OT!!

sunshine says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:11 am

No cheerleaders for the Wild. We don’t need those gimmicks.

I think Adam is right, too. I am still sticking to my prediction. After 5 minutes, Dallas wins.

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:12 am

Fortunately the union guys aren’t dressed in skimpy outfits. I guess I’m fine with women cleaning the ice, but it seems to me that arena maintenance guys are more “professional” at it if that makes sense. I know it’s just scraping ice, which isn’t exactly difficult labor, but still.

Not that I’m trying to start a battle of the sexes here…

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:14 am

I’m standing by my 2-1 prediction as well.

I think the main reason, and this is just my opinion, that the Pens started cheerleaders (which was a year or two before the lockout) was because the team was so putrid that they needed to distract the fans somehow.

Let me just say that it worked from this fan’s perspective.

sunshine says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:20 am

Yeah the guys are more matter fact about cleaning the ice.

At what point do these guys get tired? Will we be seeing guys skate slower and slower?

Goalieguy says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:20 am

What a game this is! I’ve been glued to the couch for two hours, and finally thought I’d check during this intermission to see if any Russoville residents were also watching.

I’ve seen “ice girls” in Tampa, Boston, Chicago….can never have enough of ‘em!

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Chicago’s are the best, I think, GG.

I would imagine they’re already tired, sunshine. I’ve been dying for a 4 OT game (and feared my boys would go that far today).

Adam says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:25 am

The Pens cheerleaders must go from section to section, I think that would be popular here too. On the other hand, I think we can continue to survive without a mascot although a skating black bear would have potential.

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:29 am

Adam: in the year before the lockout (which I’m now pretty sure was their debut; earlier I said a year or two before) they actually danced in the stairs between sections during stoppages. While it was nice to watch (and a fun game, guessing where they were at any given point) it was pretty stupid. They stopped that after the first year. They sort of go from section to section, they’re on the ice during the intermission games… but meh, it’s still sorta pointless.

By the way, is it just me or do the TSN guys seem to have a homer bias towards Dallas?

Sharks PP is awful.

They have a man crush on Modano.

- The Gopher cheerleaders have routines between periods and spend time during the game in sections. The whole cheerlading thing in easier to do in the college atmosphere. In the pros, it will always seem a little forced I guess.

- Sharks squandered their PP, the even it out call has to be coming.

They rarely come up to my section, though they did today for their t-shirt toss.. it was enjoyable viewing.

That was definitely a penalty on the Stars, but as the commentators said, that’s surely happened a lot up to this point without being called. Agree that a even up call is coming.

That was close.

Textbook butt save for Turco.

Textbook, eh?

Richards looks like he’s still running on a full tank.

Here’s a random question: why is there a yellow stripe on the bottom of the boards?

KiPA, here is your quadruple OT.

Kevin in PA says:

May 5th, 2008 at 12:57 am

Yup. Naturally when I wanted to go to bed sorta early tonight.. careful what I wish for, I guess.

sunshine says:

I think the fans got their money’s worth tonight.

Standing for a lot of it too.

And you just know that somewhere in the arena there’s a guy whose wife is saying, in a whiny voice, “Honey, it’s one in the morning. We’ve GOT to go home.” And he’s wondering why he ever married her in the first place.

For your intermission viewing pleasure, “Body Heat” in on something called the Slueth Network….low 300s on Direct TV, not sure what it is on other systems.

Kevin in PA says:

There was a guy sitting a few seats down from me, also a season ticket holder, who left during the third intermission because he absolutely HAD to go to the airport (don’t know if he was leaving or picking someone up).

I am kind of done making predictions except to say that I want someone to score in the first 5 minutes.

I should have stuck to my prediction.

I, for one, can never root for Marty Turco. He is so Anti-Minnesota (see ESPN the magazine about 2003 where he talks about playing for the University of Michigan and when someone mistakenly asked if he played for The U of Minnesota..he flipped out and said that he hates everything about Minnesota. And he also revealed how he was glad he no longer had a roommate as he did his stretches au natural and he had team/room mates walk in and kinda flip at this. WHY tell us this stuff?? ewwwww…I just blush whenever I see him on the ice!) Just one more of these Goalies gone wild….

Detroit has a GREAT style. They are the most entertaining team to watch..with the exception of the Pens. If the two wound up playing each other..it would be quite a great Cup. But Detroit has to beat Dallas in 5..cause the longer the series the more it favors Dallas.

Forgot to Mention…just a few weeks ago..DR whined to Sid that the Detroit payroll was less than ours…and gee..they are magnificent. They can get too fancy though..and that is their achilles heel.

BTW someone here mentioned how things are going to change and teams like the Wild could not get players in Sweden..my fiance is there..and never heard such a thing. Other teams are having no problems drafting players. The big issue is if the player will accept coming to the US and playing in minors before going to the NHL. And Sweden has a plethera of players. Look at the championships now..they are missing some big guns..and the 8 Swedes in Detroit alone..and guess what? Doesn’t matter. They have a lot of talent there. I would love to see some of it here..and they don’t require big bucks DR…..and yes..you have to groom them..but are you not doing that with Butch and with Burnsy and Koivu? There has been a lot of grooming here….and we need to replenish Houston..
