On this Date in NHL history
Posted on May 14th, 2008 – 11:50 AMBy Michael Russo
May 14, 1977 - Montreal Canadiens center Jacques Lemaire scored his third game-winning goal of the 1977 Final and his second career overtime tally in a Stanley Cup game, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 series-clinching win against the Boston Bruins. Only Maurice “Rocket” Richard of the Canadiens (3) and Don Raleigh of the Rangers (2) have ever posted more than one career overtime goal in Final history.
FYI, according to Scott Morrison over the weekend on CBC’s Hot Stove, the Maple Leafs contacted the Wild to ask permission to speak to Doug Risebrough about their vacant GM job, and he turned them down.

Russo’s colleague, Paul Walsh, must have his facts mixed up. He has posted a story that TJ Oshie has signed with the Blues and passed on his senior season with the Sioux. This cannot be true because we all know, the Goofers are the only collegiate program in the nation that has players leave early.
Nice one, DB. ![]()
- Bandgeek - “knowing is half the battle” is the greatest advice ever given by a cartoon. However, implying that the other half of the battle is shooting at, but not killing, the enemy was always confusing to me.

Yes Adam that did always confuse me as well. I also didn’t understand why my friends GI Joes were supposedly so tough when they only came to Barbies knees.
Speaking of action figures… do they make NHL action figures? I’ve seen NBA, NFL, and Baseball hall of fame ones but not NHL. A weird question I know but a friend is trying to find his kid something like that.
That a boy Dougie! Screw that mess in Toronto! Glad to have ya here.
Russo,
Would you please clarify if the ‘he’ in ‘he turned them down’ refers to Mr. Risebrough turned down the leafs, or - did Wild management deny the Leafs permission to speak to Mr. Risebrough.
Adam: I stopped listening to KFAN about a year, year-and-a-half ago. Got real bored with the “Twin Cities Leading Sports Talk Radio Station” continuously talking about what the Democrats should do in the upcoming primary; the latest book to hit the best-seller list; or which restaurant has the best atmosphere. I don’t know if any of that has changed, but it just got to be too f*^$&^# much to handle. Make the switch to satellite radio, the programming is phenominal.
Man. You know it’s slow in here when a guy can sneak a “Dodgeball” reference in here undetected (previous thread), lol.
I think the correct reading of that sentence would be that ‘he’ refers to DR.
I think it makes sense. At this point DR still has a pretty good job. Yes there is some increased pressure after the second year of 1-and-out but he is still in a honeymoon period (albeit the end). He has a new management that is committed to winning, why would he leave.
Now things will change. This is an important offseason for the team. The fans will expect some playoff success in the next 1-2 years and if he does not deliver the pressure will increase significantly. However that’s what the Toronto job will be like from day 1.
“He” could be CL because don’t they normally have to ask the owners or Sperling for permission to talk to DR.
Anyways, this off-season is as or more important than the 2006 off-season. We have more growth from our core players (Gaborik, PMB, Koivu, Schultz, and Burns) and two years of frustration of being bounced in the first round of the playoffs. They are hungry and they want DR to provide them with the necessary people to move them further and all the way to the Stanley Cup.
No More Honeymoons here in Minny. The Wild better win next year in the playoffs or Risebrough will be out…if the owner has any balls at all.
Risebrough only wants a nice easy job. He screwed up Calgary and he has been able to live off the “build from within mantra” since the Wild began operations. I am sure Risebrough feels that as long as the Wild are competitive, the fans will be still come to the games and that is the bottom line. Risebrough is underestimating Minnesota fans as far as I am concerned. Water cooler talk suggests the fans have run out of patience and they better win in the playoffs next year. As soon as things heat up in Minny, Risebrough will bolt for another job where he can do nothing except make excuses and sign goons as his big playoff move.
Considering the season-ticket base was capped at 16,500 and there are more than 7,000 on the waiting list in the Warming House, I’m not sure if the patience has, indeed, run out. Sure everyone associated with this team was pissed off when they lost to an inferior Colorado team in the playoffs. But, I’d bet my 8×10 glossy of Rosie O in her ass-less chaps that the building will be sold out again next year. And, I’d be willing to bet that if the Wild were to be bounced in round #1 next spring, that the masses would be up in arms, calling for a complete and total overhaul, but the building would still be sold out for ‘09-’10.
“build from within mantra”

The “build from within” mantra is not exclusively owned by the Wild. I would bet that a majority of the teams believe in “build from within.” Look at New Jersey, Montreal, and Detroit.
What is wrong with having a competitive team? If DR can give us a competitive team, all the better. I would be more afraid he was going to give us the Blue Jackets or even the Blackhawks of several years past. As long as the Wild is competitive every year and the economy doesn’t tank further, attendance will not be a problem.
DR needs to be a little more aggressive and bring in the right people to compliment the core players on this team.
Handing over picks and prospects for a player that turns out to be less than stellar, then signs elsewhere after a couple of years, would also greatly enhance the team’s chances of being successful on the ice.

Are you referring to the Demitra trade?

Awww, thanks, sunshine! I’m sure those teams believe in you too!
Are you referring to the Demitra trade?
Dang it! I’m trying to repress that trade to the very corners of my memory so, please, let’s just pretend it never happened, k? ![]()
Bfw, yeah the Pens are playing well but Detroit is scary. I think the East winner is playing for the right to get destroyed by the Wings.
By the way, Austin whereever you are, or Mrs. Austin, hitting the space bar on a BlackBerry is like hitting Page Down. Handy trick for that on the go web surfing.
Both Pittsburgh and Detroit have been very impressive so far. I think I would have to give Detroit the edge just because there are no holes on that roster. But it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
What else I find interesting is that for all the talk of parity that we heard during the season, these playoffs have been remarkably uncompetitive, especially once it got past the first round.

I might be persuaded to this view, since Detroit has a decided advantage of “O” from the “D” (read: Lidstrom and Rafalski).
However, riddle me this:
Has Os-no-good truly been tested this playoffs? Does he have the answer for Malkin, Sid, and Comapany?
Either way, I’m hoping for a competitive series. I have sweep-burnout.
The Detroit defense will smother the Pens like a fat chick smotherin’ a bowl of ice cream in chocolate sauce. What is Detroilet allwoing per game in these playoffs, about 22 shots? Their puck-possession game is borderline illegal.
Nice one, DB!

Saw Grapes on TV today. Asked about the Eastern playoffs he said that last night Philly played hard but without their top 2 D they couldn’t win, and he showed the Hossa goal and the mistakes the D made. Said same thing happened to Wings last year. Hmm–close to that here to without Schultz and Foster (altho Foster not a top 2 D).
DB…it’s the ice cream and chocolate sauce that makes those ass-less chaps on Rosie so tough to get out of one’s mind… ![]()
here’s a link to a TSN/Canadian Press article about the Leipold-risebrough relationship, and other Wild-related stuff:

Enjoy! (Especially you, multiple-personality Mike)
USA-Finland just began…
Quaterfinals, winner plays Russia-Switzerland winner in the Semis.
Woodcock…
I spent some time this afternoon watching some of JL’s pressers from back in the season. Specifically the Penguins game, a Blues game and the Rangers game, and then Before Game 5. His mantra during the season was injuries will hurt any and every team. And if your depth is good, the team should be able to pick up the slack. Although Foster was not a Top 2, he was definetly 4. I’m not really sure where I ‘m going with this, but I think my conclusion is that injuries hurt. Period.
1-0 Finland. Tuomo Ruutu on a quick backhand.
Didn’t Jacques also have two Cup clinching goals? That has to be some kind of record? No?
As it’s my birthday, I was hoping as a birthday present to me the organization would give PMB the long term contract he deserves.
Instead I’m settling for a PMB jersey in Iron Range Red. Which is nice too, but not quite the same thing.
A day late but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Maybe at some point soon we’ll hear the Wild has given you a late birthday present. ![]()
whoa…that was a trip.
Kiawah/Charleston, SC, PRE-Memorial Day is amazing. Warm but not hot. Breezy so not too humid. Minimal crowds, warm water, golf courses in good shape. I even got a touch of a sunburn!
I’m wading through a couple hundred emails and trying to get caught up here (is it not 2008? How my father-in-law can NOT have high speed internet - muchless wireless - in his house is beyond me)
…what’s been going on?
Lapper: I think he is the only man to score two Cup winning goals.
Good to hear, NiNY.
Haven’t missed much. The usual (don’t) trade Gaborik banter.
A little Pens/Wings forecasting.
…and a touch of a$$less chaps.
If I may, what brought you to Charleston?
bfw: business and a visit to my father-in-law’s house on Kiawah.

Sounds enjoyable. I can see now why your email is so backed up, lol!
Did you see CL cut the Swarm loose. That didn’t take long. Not a core business, he says. Is that code for “no profit?”
I was listening to Scott Morrison on HNIC Radio and he said that through third parties, DR, NJ GM, Gainey, and Holland told the Leafs that they were not interested in the job.
So the “he” in above Russo blog is DR.
I would not want to be the one to take on the Leafs as a job. After so many years without much hope the pressure would be enough to give anyone a heart attack. Even diehard Leafs fan Mike Meyers had to have them win in a movie because he felt it was the only way he’d see the Leafs get a cup in his lifetime.
Welcome home Nick, glad you had a good trip.
Did you see CL cut the Swarm loose.
I will miss the Swarm ads on this Web site but it sounded like the guy who bought the Swarm really wanted an NLL franchise. I give the former Wild ownership, who I have ripped for punting on the post lockout FA market, credit for bringing some extra crowds to St. Paul during the lockout and after.
Nick, i know you’ve been gone awhile, but will you PLEASE open up the bar alredy!!
Although Foster was not a Top 2, he was definetly 4.
Nope. He was #5 on the depth chart behind Skoula. I know most people wouldn’t agree with this, but this is where JL had him.
He might not have been a top 4 but he was definitely quarterbacking the PP. At the time of his injury, he was probably playing his best hockey the whole year.
Some posters wanted Hedican on the Wild team next year and I thought he was going to retire because of his past injuries. Well, in the Strib, he was interviewed along with his wife, Kristi Yamaguchi, and said this “Right now my contract with Carolina is up. I’m leaving my doors open. I’m not locked in on going back and I’m not retiring.”
I would rather have Carney over Hedican still.
I’m with toivo: Foster was suddenly a very good hockey player after his accident. I have no problem feeling bad for him, and agree he was playing his best hockey when he got hurt.
But he has been irrationally canonized in general after his incident.
It would have been nice to see Foster step into the top 4 when #55 went down.
Former Wild first-round draft pick A.J. Thelen, 22, of Savage had shoulder surgery Tuesday and will rehab, then plans to play next season.
A little birdie says the price tag for the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team being sold to businessman John Arlotta, who splits his time between Milwaukee and Denver, is $3 million.
It wouldn’t be surprising if a member of the prominent Marvin family of Warroad, Minn., becomes an investor in the Wild.
At the time of his injury, he was probably playing his best hockey the whole year.
I agree. And I wasn’t trying to say that I think Mad Marty is better than Fozzie, but it was just an observation on how JL was using him. He got fewer shifts, no PK time, and easier matchups than Skoula which to me suggests that JL saw Foster as more of a defensive liability, and his offense wasn’t enough to offset that. Not for the way he wants to play hockey anyway.
I would rather have Carney over Hedican still.
Ugh.
That’s like saying, “I’d rather have the guillotine over the iron maiden.”
at least Hedican is known as a skater - which might cover his deficiencies better than Carney’s cement-block feet did.
And I’m also not saying that his injury didn’t hurt. Clearly it did, which was made that much worse by Shultz’s untimely appendicitis. Hill, Carney and Nummelin just weren’t cutting it.
I know but if we are talking about 38 year-old veteran d-men, then Carney over Hedican.
My first would be someone much younger and more physical, puck moving d-men.
For a fair price I think Hedican would be a good acquisition. The Wild have to add FA defenseman this offseason. Why not take a shot on a slick skating guy from SCSU with Stanely Cup experience?
It’s not like the Wild can sign a bunch of Liles and Campbells. They need depth. There isn’t help in Houston and if you say Reitz - you are wrong.
Hedican sure looked good the other night…
…cheering on his wife in that Dancing with the Stars show…
Hedican, my biggest concern is injuries, but if we are going to ask him to play 40 games or so, and if he is under $1.5 million — it might not be bad. He could be the 8th d-men.
I forget — does the Wild usually carry 8 d-men?
NiNY,
Here’s something you mighta missed:
Apparently, there were a couple of teams inquiring about the availability of Alexi Yashin, the Wild being one of them. Evidently, he would like to return to the NHL.
Russoville took turns flogging this Roosky pretty well, lol!
bfw: wow…yeah definitely missed that little nugget, thanks.
Yeah, I have no love for Yashin at this point.
I strongly prefer Langkow to Yashin - think of the Mad Scientist’s (aka JL) line combos with Mikko/Langkow/Belanger/Sheppard to work with - but I am so desperate for a 1/2 C that I would take Yashin under the right terms.
Considering an aging Russian prima donna that can score is kinda like wandering parched through the sweltering heat of the desert, and coming across some warm rain water in a filthy, rusted-out hub cap:
You know it’s warm, filthy and rusty, but you’re so thirsty, you just gotta have a drink!!!
Adam: 100% agreed on Langkow. I would LOVE to have him here.
Adam: 100% agreed on Langkow. I would LOVE to have him here.
Would be truly disappointed if we don’t sign him. Best fit.
I’d rather have the guillotine over the iron maiden.
This is a no-brainer in my book. Guillotine, please!
I’m pretty sure Langkow is staying put.
As for defensemen, I’d prefer them to grab someone on the better side of 35.
m pretty sure Langkow is staying put.
toivo, what makes you think that? Got a scoop?
I’m usually surprised when a UFA sticks around rather than cha$ing the dollar$. Wondering if you had heard anything in particular.
As for defensemen, I’d prefer them to grab someone on the better side of 35.

I’ve seen similar articles about Langkow re-signing with the Flames but why can’t the team make an official announcement? Its been a month now since that article came out. Or is it official already and everyone just thinks its not?
I’d rather have the guillotine over the iron maiden.
This is a no-brainer in my book. Guillotine, please!
Toivo, that was pretty close to a pun.
It would not appear a Langkow extension in CGY is done yet - http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=CGY - so there is hope!
toivo, nice dig. I didn’t see that article.
That’s a real bummer. I would imagine he is fully intent on signing, and the Flames are simply withholding the announcement as a competitive advantage vs. other teams.
Oh well…
Heh, good catch Goody–not intended either.
I know the Langkow deal isn’t done, but just from the quotes in that article it sure sounds like he’s not going anywhere.
I’ve read stuff about the Flames needing to find a new home for Tanguay in order to make Langkow work under the cap, so it’s possible that’s holding up anything official. Regardless, I wouldn’t get any hopes up.
I am still going to hold out hope - Tanguay would not waive his no trade claues at the deadline and if you can find a team that wants him, DR should be talking to that team about Parrish!
Kevin, sorry bout your boys tonight. Look at it this way, now they can win the series in front of the home crowd.
The Wild finished with the third-highest average rating (2.9) among FSN regional networks that carried NHL teams this season, trailing Pittsburgh (5.9) and Detroit (4.8).
Makes you wonder about the numbers other US markets pull down. Also, Hockeytown has been ripped for the empty seats but clearley interest remains high.
Happy belated birthday, Mrs. A.
Bandgeek, yeah, I guess. Game 4 was much more indicative of how I thought this series would play out. I wanted a sweep, but at least they played better than they did in Game 4 in New York.
Philly better not bitch about the officials after this one.
Former Cretin-Derham Hall hockey star Chris Hickey, whose NHL rights are held by the Wild, will play for the University of Wisconsin next season even though the Badgers wouldn’t mind if he played another season of junior hockey. Hickey, 19, had a nice season for Tri-City in the U.S. Hockey League this year with 15 goals and 16 assists in 55 games.
