Veilleux still belongs to the Wild; 2008-09 Wild schedule

Posted on July 17th, 2008 – 11:04 AM
By Michael Russo

Wild left wing Stephane Veilleux has cleared waivers, according to two sources, despite only a $15,000 pickup fee.

I think you can read the below blog post and know exactly why Veilleux wasn’t taken.

Sorry Steph… but I am glad you are still here! Now, if you get a 1 year from arb. go out there and earn yourself a LONG TERM deal and show DR that you ARE worth what you were asking for!

Whew! He is one of a very few who bring it every night. He may not score a ton of goals but he’s a player I want on my team. I hope we lock him up for a few years.

Take that, Veilleux! You are practically worthless.
Now take this low ball one year deal and go risk a Foster-Bronko type injury with no promise of future earnings….

Sweet NHL….not having Sid the Kid in every building once again…great idea!

Heck…resign with the Outdoor Channel too…that’s GREAT for business!!!

FIRE BETTMAN NOW!!!

Deep Breath says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:17 am

Looks like the NHL scheduling committee has once again done our Wild a favor. 4 of 5 at home to close the year and a relatively “soft” opening 7 games. Is 3 months too much time to begin getting ‘up’ for the season?

Deep Breath says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:19 am

Also, have we played either San Jose or the Ducks on New Year’s Eve more than a few times? Didn’t Skooba have a Skooba moment last year against the Big-Toothed Fish to close the calendar year?

FIRE VAVRA & GARDY!!!! says:

Ovie - a contract worth 500K for a year is an amount it will take me 10 years to earn.. no need to shed tears for Steph

Sweet NHL….not having Sid the Kid in every building once again…great idea!

No problem with me, he’s so over-exposed it makes me nauseous.

We’ve got Ovenchicken coming to our building at least. I’d rather watch him anyway.

Deep Breath says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:21 am

Wall: Much agreed. Give me Ovie over Sid any day of the week. Obviously Sid is a great talent but not near you’d expect for all of the exposure.

edgewild says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:21 am

Dude…NOTHING about the NHL is overexposed.

Fact.

Deep Breath says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:23 am

Wait until the Saturday afternoon games on Nothing But Crosby and we can once again see the Pens and Rangers; Pens and Dead Wings; Pens and Devils; Pens and Pens, 9 Saturdays in a row.

Wallshot says:

I meant compared to everyone else in the game. He’s over-exposed to Hockey fans. Well, to this one anyway. He’s very talented, I get that. I’m just sick of him.

DB, did you notice the stretch from Feb 22 to Mar 29th - 15 road games, only 4 home games and they are all 1 game homestands. That’s not much of a favor!

Wallshot says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:34 am

Speaking of the UNDER-exposed NHL:

The NHL should start advertising during NFL broadcasts. They’ve had some great ads over the years, but always during hockey games or on the Versus network or whatever. Seems like a waste of time to advertise hockey to hockey fans.

BoogieNeedsAGoal says:

Deep Breath says:

El: The team has always had brutal stretches in the middle of the season the last few years, but 7 “softies” to start the year and 4 of 5 at home to close is a great way to open and close 08-09. Remember 06-07: start with 5 at home and 8 of 9 at home to close; and then last year having 3 at home to start and 4 of 5 at home to close is awfully nice. Still have to win the games, but I’d rather see the Wild start with Boston, Atl, Fla, TB, Buff, Colm, Chi than Det, Anh, SJ, LA, NJ, Pitt, Phil.

GreenStar says:

because players rarely play half the game, the NHL cannot use the NBA model of marketing a couple stars as what the league has to offer.

Wallshot says:

July 17th, 2008 at 11:42 am

Last year, I went to the 1-0 home opener versus Chicago, and I have to say both teams looked TERRIBLE! That was my first home opener - are they always that rusty during the first regular season game?

From the NHL Offices:

“Due to the lack of ‘quality’ opponents to schedule, NBC has decided to air Pittsburgh Penguins practices. The club has offered to work with the League and NBC (Nothing But Crosby) to revamp the schedule so Pittsburgh will be at home for 9 consecutive Saturdays - the length of NBC regular season coverage.

The highlight of each practice will be a shootout between the ‘black’ team and the ‘gold’ team.

As an added bonus, Sid the Kid will accept a one-day reassignment to center Marian Hossa of the Detroit Red Wings for the 2009 Winter Classic thus assuring maximum ratings.”

The “Hockey Day In Minnesota Game”(Sat, Jan 17th):

SAT. 17 ANAHEIM 8:00 P.M.

ms.conduct says:

July 17th, 2008 at 12:21 pm

I think I finally got testosterone overload there…

So, I’m disappointed in this schedule. If I want to see 3 games at the X, I’m gonna have to stay in Minnesota… in winter… for nearly a week. Not sure if DH is going to go for that. Now, if I could find a mesh in there somewhere that the Aeros are playing in Iowa or Milwaukee, that would make it solid. Otherwise, it maybe just be a two game trip. But I can be pickier about the teams that way…

The first week of December might be good. Seems like the Colorado and Van games might be a little more electric and I LUUUURVES Manny Legace, so it would hurt my feelings not at all to see him play. Or maybe just the STL and VAN games?

The trick will be finding dates that let us use FF miles. Hmm. Much to ponder.

ms.conduct says:

July 17th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Hmm, thanks Deej… could do the PHX, EDM, ANA week and watch hockey all damn day on Saturday… ohhh. Nice. Plus there should be outdoor ice by then right? *squee!* But I don’t really give a crap about Edmonton. Hmm.

Lets chat via email perhaps?

I mean, I’m definitely more interested in seeing them play than I would have been a couple years ago. Aren’t all 82 of their games supposed to be televised in ChiTown this season? I can see the local (Chicago) market coming back pretty quickly. I’m not sure how fast the ex-pats will start coming out of the woodwork in their “adopted” hometowns (ie Denver). I could also see there being more of a Blackhawk jersey showing in St. Paul, St. Louis and Detroit this season, though.

March is a wicked pissah, eh?

16 games, only four at home?

The last four of a 6-game road trip through the west coast.

I suppose that’s the mirror image of February in which the Wild plays 8 of 12 at home.

Then there are the 2 four-day breaks in December.

In fact, I count 5 total four-day breaks, not including the ASG which is part of a 6-day break for the team.

Hockeydad says:

El Gato says:

As someone stated above, HS tourney (girls and boys) and then WCHA Final Five shoots most of late Feb past the middle of March. If those Blake parents hadn’t threatened to sue the MSHSL for their girls not playing in the X we’d get a few more home games in late February. Oh well.

The ice isn’t usually very good at Alary’s, in terms of the Super Chexx machine and the American goalie was broke for about half the season last year, but I’d like to see SRV and his agent do a quick 2-out-of-3 to determine if SRV takes him back. As long as were discussing the Purple tampering with Favre, anybody know what the rules are, if any, in the NHL? Seems like Vancouver had Demo up for several visits long prior to the signing period and I didn’t know if that constituted any kind of “tampering” or not. Even though Demo was in the last year of his contract, I thought there were reports of him meeting in Vancouver long before the NHL season officially ended. Or, does an UFA has his contract status null and voided when his team’s season ends? Just curious.

Beadwench says:

July 17th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

You could probably waste a day at Mall of America, even if neither of you shop as there is all kinds of things to look at. There’s also the US hockey hall of fame in Eveleth. So you could do a day trip up to Eveleth and stay in Duluth overnight. The next day you could go on to Lambeau Field. Some ideas anyway. :)

sunshine says:

July 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

bfw: I am not sure about visits. I just remember Russo blogging about the tampering investigation.

If Demitra took a tour of the Canucks’ facilities prior to July 1st, there might be something there. If he toured it after the first, it doesn’t matter. However if he was visiting friends and family but stayed far away from the Canucks, he and the team are in the clear.

The Packers are alleging that the Vikes Offensive Cooridinator talked to Favre. That guy admitted talking to Favre after he retired back in March but none since - according to a listener on Barrerio’s show yesterday.

Wasn’t Demitra’s former linemate with the Blues now part of the Canucks management? If he talked to Demitra about going to the Canucks prior to July 1, you never know….

Its tricky and hard to prove tampering I would think.

ATx: We were thinking of the California portion of the big six-gamer in March (wife’s annual ‘thaw’), the NYC games in March (two games back-to-back) and maybe another game here or there. For as much traveling as the Wild are forced to do, someone in the NHL Operations department wants the Wild to throw a LOT of extra cash around. Some of these road trips are beyond stupid.
Ill-advised, wasteful, gas-hogging, you name it, ‘cuz they ALL fit.

ATx, I’ll let you know as we decide. You interested in, say, a game vs. the Blackhawks at the UC in Chicago? kj and I did one last year. We lost, but it was fun…

“will you be bringing me a lawyer type gal? maybe we could make a deal.”

Maybe we can work on something for you…

“The McGoverns Town meeting I went to did not work out so well. If I recall, only Bandgeek with her husband and I showed but did not recognize each other.”

The Wife and I considered that… we decided that we can either a) not go to McGoverns, b) make a Russoville sign, or do both a and b.

“ATx, I’ll let you know as we decide. You interested in, say, a game vs. the Blackhawks at the UC in Chicago? kj and I did one last year. We lost, but it was fun…”

Our only problem is that we would be relagated to a weekend game due to work. I just called Lemmiwinks and we might go to the Colorado game on Jan 4th. There is always a possibility we go to more than one away game though. that final game vs. the BJ’s looks tempting too. Let me know what you decide and we will see if it works for us as well.

Wild Road Tripper says:

Here’s some Wild scheduling quirks for greater Russoville to ponder:

- The Wild do not even see the Edmonton Oilers at all until 10 days before the All-Star Game.

- The Wild only make one trip to Alberta before the New Year. (Calgary, Dec. 29)

- For the second consecutive season, the Wild will play 3 of their 4 games vs. St. Louis before Christmas Day.

- Both Wild games in Los Angeles vs. the Kings will be 3 PM Central Time (1 PM Pacific) afternoon starts.

- All 4 games vs. Chicago will be either on Sunday or Monday. Last season, 7 of the 8 games vs. Colorado were on Sunday or Monday nights.

- Last season, the Wild had seven different start times for home games (1 PM, 2, 4, 5, 7, 7:30 and 8 PM). This seaosn, the Wild will start their games at 5 different times (2 PM, 5 PM, 7 PM, and one game each at 7:30 and 8 PM.)

Wild Road Tripper says:

July 17th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

ATx: Feb. 22, Sunday night, 6 PM start in Chi-Town…

How about Dec. 13 or Mar. 7 in Los Angeles? Both afternoon games, both times the Wild play the Fowl the next night…

Wild Road Tripper says:

July 17th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

And I erred: the Tampa Bay game the Day after Thanksgiving is a 1 PM start, the only one of the season, giving the Wild 6 different starting times…three of which are for one game only. Two others are for two games each. The other 34 games all start at 7 PM.

Six Goalie System says:

Off Topic Warning:

Since nothing new appears to be happening on the Wild front yet this morning, I thought I would throw this out.

I went to the new BATMAN movie “The Dark Knight” last night. My company had tickets to a private screening yesterday evening. It was very good, but very dark natured. Not a movie for kids, as I think most would find it disturbing.

The buzz about Heath Ledger’s performance is valid. He was fantastic as the Joker.

The movie is over 2 hours long, but really didn’t seem long at all.

I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting movie this weekend.

On the WILD front:

Does anyone know of a website where I can find video of the Wild’s Rookie Camp scrimmages? I know the Wild’s own website has a few videos of some goals, but I was hoping to see more action/footage to try and gauge what type of player each guy is.

And I am throwing out a few minor predictions the upcoming season.

Mikko Koivu - Will score 25+ goals & 35+ assists.

James Sheppard - Will score 12+ goals and 25+ assists.

Burnsie - Will score LESS goals than he did last season, but his defensive skills with escalate dramatically to make up for it.

Then night I went to McGoverns, I assumed finding others would be doable to figure out who the others were.

It was lots lots more complicated than I ever assumed. Too many people meeting other people there, and too many hiding places where people could be.

I asked every waitress I saw, and if bombarded other people that looked like they were waiting for someone.

Funny you should mention a town in Iowa Bandgeek, because I asked a table if it was a Russoville group and they asked me “whether it was a town in Iowa”.

Anyway, I did notice Mr and Mrs Bandgeek wandering around and was close to asking if they were, but by then I did not feel like asking any more strangers if they were meeting Russo’s pals without a little more to go on.

It was not until afterwards when we were posting and she said where they had sat that I realized that I had seen them.

But, that night, Mr and Mrs Bandgeek were maybe the only other ones there.

You need some sort of table banner or obvious sign if you are planning to meet there.

El Gato says:

July 18th, 2008 at 8:19 am

How about at wherever the meeting place is, if they have a hostess stand with a PA system, say you’re looking for some one and give them a former Wild player name - so when someone in the group hears ‘Kyle Wanvig, please meet your party at the hostess stand’, one of the present Russotans can locate you and bring you to the gathering spot.

kgopher says:

July 18th, 2008 at 8:28 am

I think a player name would have to be agreed upon ahead of time for the one El Gato since some of us don’t know alot of former Wild player names (ex: I didn’t know Kyle Wanvig so I would have completely missed that cue if I would have been the 1st there and had to grab a fellow Russotan).

Phenomenal! Very dark. Exceeds expectations. Leave the little ones at home, though.

The depth and intensity of the characters are unrivaled by the other summer fare, with the possible exception of RDJ’s IronMan performance.

The nearly 2 1/2hr running time moves along quite well, with some stunningly morose elements, along with the obligatory pyrotechnics.

I do not think the issue is finding a table. There is space unless the earliest person gets there late.

But, unless you have a set location ahead of time how do you know where because there are too many possibilities?

I was only in McGovern’s a couple times. So, when someone says up stairs by ___ it sounds easy. But, then you find multiple floors and stairs so the meeting spot gets really vague quickly.

Everyone inside is dressed in Wild colors.

Much better if somebody coming in the door can ask the establishment where you are meeting __?__ and they tell you where they are.

If KJ did that great a job the first time, then I thing Mr Reid deserves the business. Anyway, I like listening to his game comments so I would like to keep him in business.

My game was not a playoff game either.

Judging by SRV’s rhetoric in the paper and how far apart the two sides seem to be on his “value”, I would doubt substantially that a multi-yr deal is worked out. Expect SRV to go to his ARB hearing; expect SRV to ask for $1.1 million (similar dollars to what Fridge and Voros got); expect Wild to offer $775k; expect arbitrator to award $825k; expect SRV to sign somewhere else next summer.

I would say you have to consider the context here. It’s bad enough you have to overpay for most UFAs, I don’t think they want to set a precedent for overpaying RFAs as well.

I would speculate that SV is looking for something in the neighborhood of 1.4-1.5 for 3 years. That’s a steep price for him, imo.

The Wild can also use his clearing waivers at his arbitraiton hearing to drive home their point that he isn’t worth what he’s seeking. It would probably be best at this point for Veilleux to accept a lesser offer from the Wild.

sunshine says:

I think the Wild are trying in the nicest possible way to say to him that they think he is not worth whatever amount he wants. Putting him on waivers, while a jerk move, is better than what could come out at the arbitration hearing. They could totally trash him at the hearing because they have the resources to do the research and access to info.

Some of the things that are said at this hearings are very harsh.

Iceman says:

July 18th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Most of us are probably in some stage of the workplace or another, and have performed labor for good supervisors and good companies as well as bad ones.

It is really easy to sympathize with employees. And, in sports, where the big big bucks are being tossed around like they are beanbags.

Years ago, I read a story about when Cal Griffith moved the Twins to town. I forget the exact context of the story but he had less than $6000 in the baseball team treasury to draw from when he moved.

For some perspective, that was about the income of a teacher at that tme. So, maybe these glamor industries are not the cash cows they seem to be.

The difference between $800,000 and $1,000,000 is still $200,000.

How much would each of us do with that much cash if our raise was that much last year? How long will it take any one of us to get $200,000? Worse, how long will it take to save that much?

So, I am thinking that the clubs do understand how much pain they also need to go through to net that much money. The cap is a barrier that forces each and every negotiation to be a painful because every dollar you pay someone is no longer available for someone else or some contingency.

That is why they always take a hard line on salaries.

If Gabby is driving a half a million dollar car, maybe Veilleux wants one too. And, he may be as valuable (or more) to the team in his own way, but without the scoring touch.

So, SRV wants a half million dollar car? He should be able to get one with a half million dollar salary. How many people do you know that drive a car that cost about the same as their yearly salary? I know quite a few.

AS I said before, even if he doesn’t get a rais from DR, he gave himself a raise by firing his agent. I still don’t see why an agent is necessary. An agent can’t affect whether the Wild puts him on waivers or not. All the agent could possibly have done in this situation is 1)convince SRV he’s not worth what he thinks. 2)easier for other clubs to contact the agent than SRV.

Am I missing something?

There are three forms of waivers listed within the CBA:

1. Regular
2. Re-Entry
3. Unconditional

“The Playing Season Waiver Period” shall begin on the 12th day prior to the start of the Regular Season and end on the day following the last day of a Club’s Playing Season.”

Per Article 13, Section 18(b) of the NHL CBA:

“If no Club has claimed the Player within the time specified in the request for Waivers the requesting Club may Loan such Player to a club of another league.”

So from that, we can assume that the Wild Boys can send Steph to Houston. Or “walk-away”, and Steph becomes a UFA(see my 12:49pm).

—-

BUT, the Arb ruling COULD send Steph to Houston:

RE: Salary Arbitration Decision, Article 12, Section 9(n)(ii)(c):
“(The decision of the Salary Arbitrator shall establish) the inclusion or otherwise of a Minor League clause (or clauses) and the amount of the Minor League Salary to be paid under each of the season(s) in respect to which the arbitration is requested.

Well, BNAG, consider yourself lucky then, I guess. :)

And since it is Friday, might as well swap out Cheerios for a different grain souce, preferably the liquid type, served from the tap or bottle. ;)

Have a gr8 one!

Goody, my remark that SRV wanted a half a million dollar car was hypothetical. But, if Gabby has one maybe others do too.

If I was DR Goody, I would want to deal with an agent. The reason is that you keep the personal stuff at arms length.

If SRV does go to arbitration, then the club will be sitting there telling the arbitor what a HS SRV is.

But, otherwise, I agree with you about the agent issue. My neighbors kid had his agent at his wedding years ago. I was not impressed with the guy.

If we’re going to do T-shirts, Russovillians should beware the logo of mine on the front will be a front view of Rosie in her ass-less chaps; the back of the shirt will, of course, be a view of Rosie in said chaps from the REAR! This will be in color as well.

Even Rosie threw up a little in her mouth.

Bandgeek says:

Do you people mind!! Geeze, mentioning Rosie while I’m trying to eat my snack. How’s a girl supposed to keep her food down with that going on?

Hello?
Where did everybody go?
It was all the Rosie talk wasn’t it? Scared everybody away….

Bandgeek says:

July 19th, 2008 at 7:31 am

Damn Austin! We should start a club. Me, you and I think it was ballgame are all in the R.R. club (Rewriting Resume’s). That sucks, and I do feel your pain. And I don’t think my happy place will work for you as a mantra, you could try it though, just imagine Boogie’s lopsided grin, then Joe Mauers arse, Boogie’s grin, Mauers arse… repeat as desired….. did it work? If not I found watching Burnsie beat the piss out of Neon Dion on YouTube made me feel better, I repeated that one about 8 times while imagining it was my former boss’ boss (the dink that made the decision to cut my job) that was being pummeled.

Iceman says:

July 19th, 2008 at 8:41 am

Austin and Bandgeek, my sympathy to both of you.

I have lost my income on two occasions when the companies I worked for disappeared leaving me without employment (one business was crumbling, the other was sold). So, I do understand the difficulties.

But, there is light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes a much better situation though maybe you cannot see it now.

Nick in New York says:

Sorry. I’ve gone through it twice. Have a few beverages, then listen to Iceman. Eventually something good comes out of the chaos and upheaval.

I know the Texas Stars are hiring….

That sounds promising! Too bad I work in video game development… I am considering going back to school to take a few classes for 3D Modeling or Audio stuff… We will see.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Hopefully I will figure out what to do really soon.

What’s the deal with SRV and PMB? No news is good news I hope?

kj says:

July 19th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Bandgeek…bummer dudette.

What is with these companies nowadays. No loyalty to the people that make the cake.

Bandgeek: You are right; sometimes, the happy place just doesn’t work. You then proclaim, ‘Life sucks’ and move on to (hopefully) greener pastures!

My good friend has MS, it has progressed so that he can swallow so he can eat, he can talk, and he can move his eyes.

His wife dresses him, washes him, feeds him etc. He enjoys his kids, grandkids, and friends.

He has the best attitude of anyone I have ever known, he has a smile when I stop to see him, laughs at jokes, and does not feel at all sorry for himself.

Every bit of bad luck I have I measure against his predicament and realize that any difficulties I have are minor by comparison and temporary.

If God gave me a body and a mind, he must have expected me to use them to get beyond the current problem rather than focus on life being unfair.

And, so I do and it works a lot better.

ms.conduct says:

July 19th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

ATX, I’ve got a good friend who has been a game developer for a number of years and knows quite a few people in Austin. I’d be happy to see if he knows of any needs there.

Bandgeek says:

July 19th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I’ve had a while to get used to the situation. No Nick nothing yet, but I’ve sent in a few resume’s and am picking up lots of shifts at my part time job. My main job that I was laid off from was only three quarter time and then in the winter after the site closed for the season it was only part time so I had kept my part time guide position at a different site that is open all year around so during the winter I would still be able to pay my bills. So at least I can buy groceries and stuff. I just got an e-mail from my former boss and one of the other historic sites in the system has an opening so tonight and tomorrow I’m going to make sure I have my resume and cover letter and all that jazz ready and send it in. Pray for me to every god you’ve ever heard of because this one is something I would llllooooovvveeeee to have. It would be almost as good as having my own personal Boogie.

ATX you’ll be fine. Your good enough, your smart enough and gosh darn it, people like you.

WRT the happy place is more to keep me “centered” after about three times through with deep cleansing breaths and I’m in a much better mood. I just didn’t think Boogie’s smile and Mauer’s tush would do ATX any good, but it was worth a shot.

kj, it’s called a basement, that’s where your supposed to go when there are tornado’s. I spent a tornado with the Swan’s man once. My parents house was the last one on the route and just as he finished bringing the food my mom ordered into the house the power went out the sirens went off, and everything went overly calm and green, so he hung out for a while, spent the entire time on his cell phone reassuring his wife that no he wasn’t in the truck, yes he’s fine, he’ll be home as soon as things clear up a bit…. It was an interesting night.

It’s funny, I have a friend that works there as well. I tried getting the hook-up, but I had to move down here to TX so there was no chance… I didn’t get an interview there anyhow :>/

ms.conduct, if your friend knows anyone in town that has openings for QA leads/QA Supervisor/or a Production Assistant/Assistant Produscer he/she should definitely let me know!

Thanks for the other kind words again everyone. I think I will find something eventually, I just hope it’s a little sooner rather than later.

Iceman I haven’t read those kinds of books (the Mr called them my smut collection) in many years. The last book I read all the way through was “The Rebel League” by Ed Willes, it’s about the WHL. I just started “Kitchen Confidential.”

I’m itchy, my sunburn is peeling and it’s making me itchy, also I want the season to start, that would help the mental itchies. I’m also very full, the Mr made very good beef tri-tip on the grill, nummy!
