Wednesday check-in

Posted on August 27th, 2008 – 10:06 AM
By Michael Russo

Just jumping on for a quick hello.

1. Marian Gaborik: Tom Lynn says “we’re in the process of negotiating,” so they’re not going to give a play-by-play. But that means the Wild’s made a variety of offers ranging in term.

1(a) addition. Link to Tyler Cuma feature in the Ottawa Sun. The story was written by Donny Brennan, who wrote this graph in all the Sun newspapers during the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals: The Minnepolis Star Tribune’s Mike Russo had to do some unscheduled boxers shopping when his luggage didn’t have the same success as he did in making the trip to Ottawa from Anaheim. “We have underwear in Canada,” C.J. Stevenson told him. “And it’s not all long.”

Thanks Don. And I apologize for the image, Canada and now Minnesota.

2. Kurtis Foster: I talked to him Monday. He’s been given the green light by orthopedist Joel Boyd to take a twirl on the ice. It’ll be short and painful, but it’s a start. But because Foster’s gear is at the rink and the Wild isn’t allowed in the arena because of the RNC, Foster plans to take a few more weeks before going on the ice for the first time next month. He’s still a long way off from playing obviously.

He still limps but has been without his cane for two weeks. He calls rehab a full-time job. He works out two hours in the morning, then does two hours of therapy, goes for lunch and returns for pool therapy for at least an hour three days a week. He had a lot of good anecdotes about his summer, but I’ll do a Foster story sometime next month.

3. I went out to the Octagon camp yesterday morning and there were a bunch of Wild players, other NHLers, college and high school players out there. Off the top of my head: Brent Burns, Derek Boogaard, Josh Harding, Stephane Veilleux, Mark Parrish, Florida’s Keith Ballard, New Jersey’s Paul Martin, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Boogaard and Alex Goligoski, Tampa Bay’s Mike Lundin and Brandon Bochenski, Carolina’s Tim Conboy, Chicago’s Dustin Byfuglien, the Islanders’ Tim Jackman, Erik Rasmussen, Wyatt Smith, Ben Clymer, Mike Stuart and others. Ryan Malone was there Monday. A number of high school players were there too, including Minnetonka’s Max Gardiner, the younger brother of Jake Gardiner, who is Wisconsin-bound and was drafted in the first round by Anaheim in June. More Wild players will be showing up the next three weeks as players arrive back in town.

4. Harding let me take a look at his new mask yesterday, and like all of Josh’s masks, it’s very creative indeed, and very cool, especially for his buddies. On each side are 12 of his best friends skating on a pond outside his Saskatchewan house.

5. Derek Boogaard is still big. I know this because a couple friends brought their children to the skate, and the Boogeyman took pictures with them. And Kyle and Brenna came up to Boogaard’s hip and knee, respectively. Boogaard said he’s had no flare-ups with his back this summer, and he’s looking forward to a healthy return to the ice. He also was hysterical as usual in telling me about his summer. I’ll be doing a Boogey story next month, no doubt.

6. Mark Parrish is frustrated but trying to be patient. He’s had some offers, but I think he’s really hoping for Vancouver to make an official offer. But the Canucks are in limbo waiting for Mats Sundin. I think Parrish wouldn’t mind facing the Wild six times a year.

OK, that’s it. There’s a lot of other cool feature stuff I’ve been gathering on Wild guys, but I’ll save it for next month when things start hopping again and you’ll see daily stories again. Adios.

At the risk of repeating myself, it would be great if Boogey could earn a regular shift (even on the 4th line) this season.

I’m not asking for 10 points or something silly like that. Just consistently being dressed would be a great start, because it would mean his game really has rounded out and his back hasn’t flared up.

sunshine says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am

Well, we at least know that an offer has been made. (Sigh of relief). The first step has been taken.

Wow, that’s lots of NHLers on the ice. Didn’t realize that Wyatt Smith spends his off-season in the area.

ms.conduct says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:19 am

How about just ONE story now… just to tide us over until “things start hopping.” Sorta like one present on Christmas Eve. :D

Thanks for the update. Tasty!

Klauss says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:21 am

I’m fine with his spot duty and 3-5 mins. per game.

Other than the KO punch, he offers little.

sunshine says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am

I bet Parrish and Demitra are relishing playing the Wild 6 times a year.

Wildfor#9 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:44 am

I’m with you Nick. Some minutes for Boogy would be great. I was watching a fight of his from a few years ago, and the announcers talked about how he didn’t want to fight, and wanted to go to the puck.

Boogy’s role has really shrunk, especially this year when his back was bad.

Bandgeek says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:44 am

sunshine: Wyatt Smith is a Minnesota boy. He was born in Thief River Falls, same town the Mr was raised in. No they didn’t know each other. Smith is much younger than the Mr and Smith wasn’t raised completely in TRF.

sunshine says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:52 am

Thanks, BG. For some reason, it got into my head that he was Canadian. Oh well.

The Fabulous Masked Fan says:

August 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am

Dear Sunshine, if Parrish and Demitra play against the Wild the way they played FOR the Wild last year, the Wild will have nothing to worry about….

El Gato says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:00 am

Parrish and Demo would probably relish playing the Wild 6 times a year, but in order to do that both would need to be healthy. I would bet both would only play at most 4 times.

Bandgeek says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:18 am

TRF is far enough north to be almost Canada. Only 70 miles from the border. And I think he went to high school in Roseau, so even closer yet…. or was it Warroad? One of those any way.

full time job says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:20 am

I like how 5 hours a day (3 days a week) equates to a full-time job for Foster. I wish I only had to work 15 hours/week :) Looks like I went into the wrong field.

Yoke says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:20 am

I’d love to see Boogaard show more improvement as a skater and earn more ice time. He is a force every time he is on the ice, whether he is fighting, standing in front of the net or throwing a big hit.

The Fabulous Masked Fan says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Smith played at Warroad before joining the GG’s. While he is not a top level star in the show I think his time w/Lemaire developed him into a fairly good role player. If Boogy was utilized more and got more ice time I could see him develope into a good crease-post player like a Fedoruk or Simon. He has the size and toughness to establish position there and stir it up.

Aaron in Houston says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:30 am

Georges Laraque slimmed down a bit for last season and saw an increase in ice time and an overall improved level of play. It ultimately earned him a contract with Montreal for this season.

Perhaps Boogaard is 20 pounds from more ice time and fewer back problems?

ms.conduct says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:31 am

I had the same thought, FTJ… Though I would imagine it’s very very tiring work, both mentally and physically, and just the healing process makes a body need more rest. I think the point really is that he’s not sitting around eating jelly beans and playing Madden. :)

Boogie needs to do just what you said, Yoke.

Bandgeek says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:50 am

Nothing wrong with sittin’ around eating jelly beans. They are my favorite snack. Not keen on video games Madden or otherwise, don’t have the hand eye coordination for them so it’s never much fun for me. The Mr is good at Pong and Centipeed (we have an Atari simulator thingy).

GreenStar says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

i’d like to see DB get parrish minutes this season. I thought he was on his way after the 06-07 season but regressed in 07-08.

if he stays at 3 to 5 minutes per game, I’d have to question his usefulness. The one dimensional enforcer doesn’t have a role in today’s NHL. Sad but true.

Wej says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Boogaard does not have the hands to play in front of the net and is a defensive liability everytime he steps on the ice. He knows his role and he does it well. No need to expand his ice time.

ms.conduct says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

*Nothing wrong with sittin’ around eating jelly beans.*

I dunno. For a million a year, I have a problem with it. :)

sunshine says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

07-08 was not a good season for Boogie. His injuries kept him much of the ice. Plus, the officials were on the lookout for him, which also limited what JL can do with him.

Yoke says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

I think it’s possible for Boogey to improve a lot more. Look at him from a few years ago to the first year he spent with the NHL club. His skating skills improved a ton. Last year his back was bad, so hopefully that is the reason he didn’t look as well.

This year I’m hoping for more steps towards where guys like Fedoruk and Laraque are at. Tough guys that get productive ice time.

Bandgeek says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

Last I checked I make no were near a million a year, and if jelly beans helps Fossie heal… so be it. Get the boy a bag of Jelly Belly’s.

El Gato says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

For a guy who has never been suspended he sure gets a lot of attention from the officials.

ms.conduct says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Alright fine. Jelly beans for everybody.

Lucky says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Thanks for the update Russo! I hope the Wild can get things worked out with Gaborik. At least we know they are talking.

It won’t be long until training camp and then preseason and then it’s time to drop the puck. Oh I’ve missed hockey.

M 03 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

perhaps this can replace the image of mention of Russo’s boxers, previous thread’s cheerleaders (for pro hockey?):

The Fabulous Masked Fan says:

August 27th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Wej, you are right, Boogy does not have the hands, and never will. My suggestion that he turn into a low-down player revolves around what he can do down there to set up the guys who do have the hands. And IMHO he can improve himself defensively if he can pick up his skating. I know the guy will not become a H-O-Famer, (well, maybe enforcer HOF!) but I am of the belief that he could still be a solid contributor…

The Fabulous Masked Fan says:

August 27th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

Sorry for the consecutive post here, but if we are talking jelly beans here, put my vote in for black jelly beans and black only. They are the best. Period.

Kevin in PA says:

:)

slapshot6 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

ms.conduct - Mirtle’s post was good although I don’t quite understand the issue with the #69!?!

My husband stills skates and his # is 69. The guys on his team, the Bruising Beavers, they never give him any crap about it and none of the fans ever snicker ;)

Goody says:

August 27th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Just to get it straight, I don’t think many are advocating Boogey get more minutes playing at the same level he has played in recent years. I think they are saying IF he can show some improvement (skating, hands, screening) it would be very helpfull. Imagine if he were good enough to earn a regular shift. It would probably reduce the scrutiny by the officials and we all know he drives some other players and coaches to distraction.

ms.conduct says:

August 27th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

LOL I’m #6 on my team (well, one of them… welcome to novice league). I should slap a 9 on there just to give the guys a laugh.

Hockeydad says:

August 27th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Foster’s rehab, though only up to 5 hours a day, is probably very grueling. I wouldn’t trade my measly 50-60 hrs/week lawyering for that.

El Gato says:

SS6 - You forgot to mention your hubby’s favorite place to shoot is the 5 hole! ;-)

ms.conduct says:

Surely Boogie sees the writing on the wall for guys like himself. If Fridge didn’t paint the picture clear enough, I dunno how else to get the point across. My secret little hope is that the reason he stayed the summer in Minny was to work on these things. I hope Kassian’s been somewhere doing the same…

slapshot6 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

El Gato - I didn’t mention it cause I figured it was a given. He’s really got to be careful not to get penalized for checking from behind……

slapshot6 says:

Boogie value to this team has been discussed at length on the this blog. I think he is a fan favorite (I’m a big fan and we all know Bandgeek is as well :)) and I think alot of us can agree that his role needs to be bigger if he is going to be an assest. And not just when it comes to enforcing.

But also I’m totally scared of mascots. *shudder*

Wild Road Tripper says:

The Mr says if we have to have a mascot, he wants a Yoppy. You know what Yoppy is right? That Muppet on crack lookin’ thing the Habs inherited from the Expos when they moved. But I don’t think we need a mascot. Although TC is good, baseballs different, I’m babbling aren’t I? Oooooo lightning! Maybe I need to go batten down the hatches… now I sound like a pirate. Aaarrrgghhh matey…. ok, I’m done now, I think, maybe……

The idea of a mascot doesn’t bother me that much. As long as the freaking thing doesn’t get in MY way while I’m at the X then he can break dance, crowd surf or spin his head until the drunks piss themselves laughing. People don’t have a issue with Goldy at the U of M hockey games. Why is this a big deal?

But really if Craig wants to bring something up from his southern marketing tell him it better be $1 beer night. Those $7 beers add up quick at the X.

ms.conduct says:

Pfft. Dollar beer at southern hockey is a damn myth…

Buddha says:

August 27th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

I’m telling you right now… the Wild get a mascot and it walks in front of me while the puck is in play… well… they may need to install a new pane of glass.

And it says “college degree preferred.” Really? A degree? C’mon. I thought it was bad when they told me I wasn’t qualified to be an assitant manager when I was with a fine office supply retailer because I didn’t have a degree. Yeah… 4 years of study required to put pens on the shelf. Got it.

But to dance around and look stupid? I thought we did that while IN college, not after…

Call me stupid if you like, but wouldn’t it seem to make more sense to actually hire someone and taylor the costume to fit them rather than trying to find a qualified applicant that fits the costume???

I could understand if we’d had a mascot for years that they’d have an existing costume but as this is a new thing???

I wonder how much a professional mascot gets paid? Probably more than me. Heck, Goldy Gopher probably gets paid more than me. :(

Goody says:

August 28th, 2008 at 6:11 am

What do you suppose the mascot will look like?

Just a giant Wild logo thing that will have to turn sideways to fit through doors?

Some sort of monster?

Or will it be something that has no apparent link to the name Wild? Like maybe a giant piece of lutefisk or something.

I was in a focus group for the mascot and the new 3rd jersey maybe in may or june. I mentioned it here so it shouldn’t be a surprise.

as presented to us, the mascot will be an ambassador to children. make appearances at schools, festivals, fairs and other children activities. the mascot would be roaming the concourses on game day but not have an active role in the game presentation.

It’s not a bad idea.

Goody, Goldy doesn’t get paid. He’s usually a guy cheerleader who is a back up for the ‘good squad’ or a band member who isn’t marching or in that particular pep-band (at least that’s how they used to do it). If it’s like G* says, for the kids, then it isn’t a bad idea. From what I can tell the Habs fans love Yoppy, and if they have a mascot in Montreal we can deal with one also.

In my four years at SCSU I was Blizzard the Husky and I wore the costume for men’s hockey games and men’s/women’s basketball games. In that time I had the chance to talk with other mascots, such as Goldy. It is not a backup cheerleader. He was like me, a gy who could skate and who loved hockey and happened to be in the right place at the right time to be invited to volunteer as the mascot.

Deep Breath says:

A little off topic. We have all relished slamming Dougie Ballgame for the job he has done of late with the Wild. But, the track record of Bill Smith with the Twins is going nowhere real, real fast. Lost Hunter for nothing; got what looks to be marginal talent/projects for the best pitcher in baseball (at the time); signed Hernandez; Everett; Lamb and Monroe which amounts to basically $15 million dollars of wasted payroll, which is almost 20 percent of the total payroll. Ballgame certainly has his issues, but Ballgame makes Smith look a lot like McHale. Ish.

I always wanted to be Goldy growing up. Then my dad told me I couldn’t be Goldy if I was going to be on the team… I think I was 8 or 9. Crushed me for a good week. I argued, saying I could just be Goldy between periods… no dice. Never went to the U either. Ah well.

Buddha says:

I am not trying to sound like a supporter or detractor here, but I think an ice girls team is inevitable. The trend seems to be there for the NHL… and it does appeal to their core base of fans. Sorry ladies, maybe they’ll talk Burnsie into doing the three stars shitless to compensate.

Bandgeek says:

Aaron, it was mentioned yesterday. I just don’t think many of us care about Sak-itch.

Anything that makes the Avs better is nothing I want to dwell on. Hosers.

Nick in New York says:

I think it’s really more that we know what we’re going to get with Super Joe. About a point a game.

I’m all for knowing thy enemy, but it’s sort of a quantified issue already.

I’d like to think that his waiting so long to decide hurt the Avs’ chances of signing any high level UFAs this summer, though…

sunshine says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:06 am

Not really if you had a higher than 50% chance of him returning for $7 million or less. Now, if Sakic had decided to retired, the Avs would have been in trouble.

Since he didn’t, they are fine and still have plenty of room under the cap.

Nick in New York says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:10 am

I’m not sure I’d classify them as “fine.” On paper, I’d say they might very well be the worst team in the division. I think his indecision really put a crimp on their summer from the perspective of “which holes do we have to fill” more than any cap consideration.

Agreed, that retiring now would have hurt them more, though.

Lapper says:

I must have missed the whole 3rd conversation…

What kind of look are the new sweaters going to have?

Lapper says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:16 am

3rd jersey…sorry

sunshine says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:17 am

Sorry, I meant fine in the sense that the Avs were able to sign FAs as long as they had left $8-9 million for cap space and Sakic, who almost everyone knew would likely return and return only to their team.

Unlike the Canucks who are leaving $10 million of cap space for a guy who can choose from up to 6 teams if he returns and is jerking everyone’s chain around.

Side note: sunshine did you find those yearbooks??

Nick in New York says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:23 am

I had to euthanize the Sporting News yearbook. In addition to the jackass that wrote the Wild piece (not our beloved leader) saying that Rolston was a native Minnesotan, they managed to refer to the Devils as the Rangers in one place.

It’s editing blunders like that that made the Hockey News un-readable to me back in the day.

sunshine says:

I am going to pick one up today. I was at the local Rainbow on Tuesday and did a cursory look but didn’t find it there.

Might be there today since the publications guy poster said that is when it will likely be in newsstands in the midwest.

I have to find a SI for my sister. She has a mad crush on Phelps and wants his issue. She went to local BN, Walmart, and Target and they were none left. She called around, too, (BN and Borders in the St. Paul surrounding) and most stores are out.

Why the need to be a proficient skater?

Good question.

I suppose the beast could be on ice between periods. perhaps it is so it can skate at youth hockey events, or at that kids camp they sometimes do or the after game skate on the ice thing. They alluded that there would not be some clown running thru the stands during play. That’s all I know.

on sakic…at some point there is diminishing returns. one of these years super joe will be normal joe.

I’m less worried about him now than I was in 03.

on 3rd jersey…if they went with the design my group liked with a super-majority, it will be green and look a lot like the all-star game sweater. have minnesota across the front.

The magazine distributer in the TC is Gopher News Co. 763-546-5300. They should be able to tell you when the THN, TSN & NHL Yearbooks will hit the newsstand and what retailers will carry it. They might also be able to help you with your Sports Illustrated.

My Blood / Hockey level must be low. I can’t even pick up on misspelling shirtless.

Maybe I could hit one of the local rinks here in the Blaine area… has to be someone playing for points right?

St. Louis Park with a 6 year old, and 8 week old… just not happening. Hey… maybe one of them can grow up to be Goldy???/

Buddha, if I give you a cookie will you not cry? Besides, there is no crying in hockey. Even when Fossie broke his femur he didn’t cry; scream in agony, yes; cry, no.

Goody says:

Bandgeek, I assumed he wasn’t paid. Just trying to be funny. Not working I guess.

Skating - I’d guess the mascot will make intermission appearances.

I’d also guess that there may be more than one Goldy Gopher. Probably one who does hockey, one who does basketball, one who does football, etc. If not, he’d really have a tough schedule.

Bandgeek says:

August 28th, 2008 at 9:56 am

Cute kid story… I was talking to a friend at the Summer Bash back in June about Fossie and his femur, and this little kid near us asked why he would break his monkey…. did you get it? The kid thought he had broken his lemur….. Ok even I think that was lame now. Maybe I need some sugar in my system, off to find some munchies or a really early lunch, guess that’s what I get for napping through breakfast.

I could go for that look, I suppose.

Green* - any talk of phasing out the current road white jersey? Was a white/wheat version of the current IRR thrown out as a possible 3rd jersey (or a possible new road)?

But, the track record of Bill Smith with the Twins is going nowhere real, real fast.

And yet the team nobody thought would compete this year is a game out of first in the division at the end of August and 2.5 back of Boston for the wild card.

GreenStar says:

in baseball with no hard cap, you can afford to take flyers on players which is what they did. levan has 11 wins which were important wins.

as for getting nothing for hunter. I think they thought they would resign him. they made a great offer that was market value until anaheim decided went temporarily insane.

i haven’t. some cat on fast money was pimping an insurer in their space, name i never heard. made a good case.

I haven’t made a trade in a while. i’m about 12% cash. i wish it were 20%.

Lapper says:

I like that 3rd jersey idea G*. For now it should have a classic, old-school feel. It would be neat if they could incorporate the current oval logo, and have it some how play homage to the St. Paul Athletic club’s logo’s of the past…

But Having Minny across the front and having the All-Star template is paying homage to the team’s brief history…

Nick in New York says:
