Burns undergoes elbow surgery, out 4 weeks; Koivu’s mother makes Daily Show cameo

I just got off the phone with Brent Burns.
“I’m feeling great. I’m just at home watching Big Brother 10 and reading Russo’s Rants!” Burns said.
Safe to say Burnzie’s back to his old self, eh? Star Tribune might need to start cutting Burns some checks for all this continued good pub (don’t count on that Brent).
Burns, according to the team, will miss about four weeks after undergoing surgery earlier today to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. He says he’s a quick healer and hopes to be back sooner.
Burns was feeling pain in his elbow last season, assistant GM Tom Lynn said, and it returned when he hit the ice last month.
But Burns tried to play through it the last few weeks. In fact, he even scrimmaged Wednesday morning before his doctors’ appointment. According to Burns and Lynn, Burns could have perhaps gotten through the season without the surgery, but if it got worse, he definitely would have missed time.
So the Wild made the decision to operate on Burns now to fix the problem and prevent missed time this season.
The Wild’s best defenseman will likely miss the start of training camp Sept. 20, but he said he’s a quick healer and won’t miss the start of the season, which is Oct. 11.
In other news, check out the Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight on Comedy Central at 10 p.m., replayed at midnight.
My buddy, who’s a senior producer with the show, hooked me up with tickets, and it’s hysterical. It’s been a fun couple weeks. Hung out with the Counting Crows last week, and took some friends back stage before the show. Also got to meet and hang with Daily Show’s Wyatt Cenac over the weekend.
Not to give too much away, but the Minnesota Wild sweater makes a Daily Show cameo, only instead of the Wild emblem in the middle, it says, “Hockey Mom!” 
And as some astute readers have pointed out, it turns out the hockey mom is Mikko Koivu’s mom, Tuire. You can see yesterday’s episode on dailyshow.com to see what I’m talking about.

At least he didn’t break his foot but not have surgery on it until he’d be out until January.

So. We’ve moved PMB to center, and Pouliot back to wing. Got it. So this is Houston, and the Aeros are skating, not the Wild? (No knock on Houston, just saying… that is where those players played in Houston… not in MN)
It could be part of the problem is that the Wild never changed PMB from center to RW?
Well, he may be listed as a center, but this is the NHL… do they not watch the games? Read articles about the team? Talk to the team… hell talk to the players? They should know he doesn’t play C… just because the roster says he’s a center doesn’t mean he is.
Same way as the injury reports might say burns now has an upper body injury. You would think the NHL could figure out he had elbow surgery. You would think they could figure out PMB is not a center and Pouliot is.
This really irritates me. Not sure why. I need a beer.

I know this is a hockey blog but I want to whine for 2 seconds on my Fantasy Football team. I lost out on 28 points from Eli and Santana Moss.
I hope Big Ben, S. Holmes, and Holt can garner me more points. Its been a year since I played so I am going to worry a little more this week even though I said that I was going to take a more laid back approach.
Sunshine, two things in consolation: one, a friend of mine forgot to check his lineup and didn’t have Moss in it; two, I would’ve made the same decision as you did.
Of course, my friend had Eli and Burress.

Yeah, my brother had to remind me that I had to set my team lineup because the first game was tonight. I completely forgot.
This league I am in is an auction league so we each receive $200 to bid for players and among the usual player, we have to start a linebacker, DB, Punt/kick returner, and cornerback/safety. No team defense. So there is 20 players per team. Let me tell you, I annoyed the other teams because I kept asking which position and and what team does that person play for.
If we stuck to the basics, I would have been fine but linebackers and specific defense guys are over my head.
Hehe… I don’t think I’d like having to draft individual defensive players.

I figured, kj. What I was saying is that most people here seem to want to drive him away. Make him an offer - deserved or not - that he can’t refuse, but want him to refuse it anyway so they can chase him out of town with torches and pitchforks.
Even if you don’t like Hockey’s Future, that’s the best prospect report I’ve seen for this organization. And I’m NOT speaking so much to the order of players because that’s infinitely debatable (though I can’t argue with much of it) but the write-ups on each player are thorough and completely accurate as far as I’m concerned. Really well done.
I’ve heard a lot of people b*tch about Gaborik and how they can’t wait for him to leave. I’ve never understood it. Why are you so anxious to drive your franchise player out of town? Do you believe they grow on trees? Will you be happy once this happens and DR panics and signs and way over pays a Danny Briere next free agency? I won’t be and I for one hope they can get a deal done. Now having said that the only time Gaborik and Ovechkin should be in the same sentance is when you say “Gaborik and Ovechkin are european players”. They should not be paid at the same level. IMO
Lucky…I am not a big fan of MG. However, this team’s options for scoring are rather limited.
DR can resolve this easily by tossing out a dollar amount Gaborik thinks he might see next spring when he is a UFA.
Only when you see that nothing will make him re-sign here do you make overtures to trade him.
They honestly cannot afford to screw around with him. If they do, it will be January and he’ll be another rental player for the ‘09 playoffs.
DR needs to have a sense of urgency with Gaborik’s contract.

Why did we not hear about this Rob Daum character? From the article lucky posted, it sounds like he pretty much ruined the development of some top prospects, and could very well have ruined their careers in the process.

This is the sense I got about the Daum Era in Houston,
He offered no discipline or teaching. He let the guys play at will and some of them had great offensive #s.
I don’t know if missing the playoffs or guys not being prepared when they came up to the big club or everything together was an indicator to the Wild that a coaching change needed to happen.
Maybe AiH and ms.conduct can give us a closer look at the Daum Era.
Have we not bitched about Daum here? Augh. Maybe because his name is a four letter word. Yeah, he really just let the boys run amok here for two years. No discipline, practices starting at NOON, so the boys (cuz you know Foyzie was here during that time and he’s a walking party) would stay out all night and sleep all day until practice and then skate off their hangovers. At least, this is this scuttlebutt I’ve heard repeatedly. Season before last was utterly depressing (though our goalie woes when Hards was called up were a big part of that… why bother playing hard when you have rec league-level goalies in net?)
Okay /rant. But yeah, Daum damaged some careers here. Maybe not irrevocably but definitely to some degree. KC is a great coach but really just about anybody would have been better. A poke in the eye if you ever run into him would be entirely appropriate. Give him a knee in the junk from Ms. Conduct while you’re at it.

What I remember about Dan’s last list was that I went around and around with someone on the Wild board (one of the flying monkeys, I think) about whether Ryan Jones or Anton Khudobin should be ranked 9th and 10th or 10th and 9th (or whatever the number was). Is it hockey season yet? I’m going a little stir crazy. The cool weather doesn’t help, just makes me realize how close yet how very far we are from the start of the season. I caught myself thinking about getting my skates sharpened, and perhaps taping my stick. I also thought about getting out a few more of my jerseys from the back of the closet and making sure they hadn’t collected to much dust over the summer.
BG, I’ve washed my jersey and had my mom take the sleeves up a bit. Except like the cheap crap the NHL send us, the little triangle under the laces at the neck came unstitched a bit. Grr. Need to fix that.

MsC, the Mr and I have a collection of jerseys, 10 in all. 2 Gopher, 4 Wild (white, red, green, and a black practice), 1 game worn team Norway, 1 Winnipeg, 1 MN Fighting Saints, 1 Vulgarians (from Mallrats). It takes a few loads of laundry to get those all dust free, can’t exactly throw the bright blue Saints jersey in with the white Norway jersey, just incase the colors run. Speaking of laundry, guess I better go get the last load of towels in the dryer before I get ready for bed. Later all.
Maybe you should hang on to some dry cleaning bags to put over them in the summer?
We only have 5, unless you count my league jersey, which is just gross and shouldn’t be counted. We did have 6 but I gave the Panther’s jersey (someone gave it to DH a few years ago) to Goodwill because palm trees do not belong on hockey sweaters.

Impressed that you have an Aeros jersey… People get really worked up about which type of plane they use. I’ve totally embraced my inner-guy but I still don’t get the fuss about that. A plane’s a plane. Apparently the bomber flying out of the puck is the one people like (and is the current one).
Yeah, I remember reading some stories (even way up here) about the plane on the front. The Wild took over control of the team and the fans in Houston staged a mini-riot in protest of the new logo.

I might be completely alone on this, but I don’t understand why it’s bad to have a name on the back of your jersey. I know players leave teams (it happens all the time), but get over it. Doesn’t it also show that you didn’t just become a fan of whatever team that current year? Isn’t that a good thing?

Here’s my deal with jerseys with names, and it is just me. Everytime I have bought, given, or been given a jersey with a name on it, something bad happens. Lemieux retired, Roy retired, Tkachuck switched teams. All within one year of me getting the jersey.
KG got traded almost a month after I got his. Rolston did OK, he didn’t get hurt or anything, and I had his for a couple years. Bruno left at the end of the season I had his.
Liriano threw out his arm literally the first day i wore his jersey.
So. I was thinking about actually buying a couple ‘Nucks jerseys just to see if I can’t get a couple of them to drop.
No problem with the names on jerseys. I would love to have a Burns, or a Koivu, but just thinking about it is probably why Burns had surgery. It’s my curse…
The Mr and I don’t care if our jerseys have names or not. We only have one with a name on it. Green Wild with Walz on the back, when we got it the conversation went something like this:
Mr: Dear, what would you like for our anniversary?
Me: Nothing much, just take me out to dinner at a nice place ok.
Mr:Are you sure?
Me: Yep, although if you really want to get me something I wouldn’t mind a green Wild jersey before we can’t get them anymore.
MR: Oh yeah, their getting rid of the green ones this season. Well, thats a bit out of my price range right now.
Me: We could get one and share it, you pay half I’ll pay half. Do you want a name on it?
Mr: Well I know you’ll want Boogie.
Me: Nope, not with the curse we have, show the tiniest interest in a specific player and they get traded or career ending injury.
Mr: What about Walz? We like him, and he’s probably going to retire sometime in the next few years, I don’t mind having a retired guy on the jersey.

All our other jerseys have no names, although the Norway one has a number 3 on it. I don’t know Norwegian so I can’t figure out from the team web site who wore it. The Mr would like a North Stars jersey, first season style, with #1 Worsley on the back, and I would like a 1980 USA with #5 Ramsey on the back. All our jerseys have been gifts, mostly from me to the Mr and visa versa. I’m babbling… need to go back to bed but doggies woke me up to go out. Now can’t fall back to sleep.

I only get Ms. Conduct on mine. #10. But I have absolutely no issue with other people getting a player’s name or wearing a player after they’re gone. Of course, in Houston, most people don’t unless they win one of the auctioned jerseys. Guys come and go too quick around here.

!! So it’s YOUR fault! Grrr!!!
I have a Fernandez (white) and a signed Gaborik (IRR). The next one I get though will probably be a custom one with my last name. I have no problem with names (even if the player left) or customs. Don’t see what the big deal is. The almost Mr. has a blank IRR that he is getting player autographs on and a green custom one. I also have a blank Devils one from way back in HS before I liked hockey. My bro was supposed to get a Penguins one and we were going to share because at the time those were the 2 teams he liked (even though he didn’t really like hockey). I also have to admit to having a San Jose Sharks hat at one time (I liked the colors) and a Mighty Ducks Starter jacket (again liked the colors and liked the movies.) Once I started liking hockey, I started to HATE the Ducks so I have hidden away that jacket and will never wear it again.
If I get a name on one of my jerseys….I think that lemmiwinks would be quite classic. On a different note….It’s COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAY!!! I never knew what I was missing before I went to the CU/CSU game last week. Absolutely incredible….now if only CU can survive our brutal schedule. Eastern Washington this week, then: West Virginia, Florida State, Texas (FU guys) ;-), Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Texas A&M, Iowa State, OK State, and Nebraska

I don’t see the big deal about names on the back. I bought a Rolston jersey a couple seasons ago and I still plan to wear it when I go to games. I’ve seen people wearing Mitchell jerseys at the X.
I find it amusing as an Avs fan, but embarrassing as a Minnesotan,that there are more Minnesota kids on the Avs roster than the Wild’s. The North Stars used to have home-grown talent on the roster, just like the gophers. Where are the Minnesotan’s?

Plus… Two players on the roster who played college hockey in CO, and another born in Littleton.
Minny has only three Americans listed only one of which is from the state of hockey.
I guess too many “hockey mom’s” are building their foreign policy skills in the PTA rather then getting their kids to the tournaments with the scouts watching.
So I take it we should keep drafting AJ Thelen’s and signing Mark Parrish’s to long term contracts? No thank you. I’ll leave the homer MN hockey player love to Doug Woog.
