Day 3: Grand Forks

Just a 3:30 p.m. update: Writing. I’ll be back on later. I can tell you the Wild is currently meeting again with Marian Gaborik’s agent.
The boys are taking the ice now for first session practice. I’ll be back at noon to give you scrimmage updates.
By the way, if you didn’t see, San Jose’s Torrey Mitchell underwent surgery after breaking his lower leg during practice yesterday. Mitchell is the player who played a role in Kurtis Foster breaking his leg.
A sympothetic Mitchell called Foster soon after the accident.
FYI, Gaborik being kept off the ice again today. He says his quad is getting better. Won’t comment on anything else, even the weather.
Scrimmage has started. I’ll do my best to give scoring updates, however I’m transcribing tons of interviews and have lots to write as it’s going on. So I miss a few things
It’s Harding and Honesty vs. Backstrom and Preparation today. Honesty’s got guys like Veilleux, Belanger, Koivu, Gillies, Miettinen, Schultz. Prep’s got guys like Pouliot, Bouchard, Nolan, Boogaard, Bergeron, Johnsson.
Twenty minutes in, and the shutout is over. Owen Nolan just scored a fabulous goal. He wheeled around the defenseman, cut hard to the net and scored five-hole on Harding.
But 10 seconds later, Mikko Koivu set up Big John Scott to tie the game for Honesty.
2-1 Honesty, Cal Clutterbuck whips a bullet over Backstrom’s glove. Assist to Eric Belanger.
Penalty with 1:05 left. Stephane Veilleux gets a penalty shot but fires a slap shot over Backstrom’s glove.
Intermission
3-1 Honesty 3 mins in. Grand Forks resident Bryan Lundbohm scores on an Erik Reitz rebound off the back boards.
3-2 though 15 seconds later on a bullet from Marc-Andre Bergeron. The guy can whip it. Very Brian Rolston-like from the point.
Tied at 3: Harding beaten on a breakaway by Carson McMillan. 22 minutes left in the second half.
4-3 Honesty again: Stephane Veilleux from point-blank in front of Backstrom. Twenty minutes left. Veilleux just slid a puck wide on a breakaway on the ensuing shift. Moments after that, Veilleux comes in again and Backstrom sticks out his right pad to rob him.
I’m thinking Backstrom wants to be pulled at this point. Nineteen minutes left.
5-3 Belanger on a one-timer. Eighteen left.
6-3 Veilleux. He’s always good in these things. 3 minutes left.
Backstrom just stopped Colton Gillies on a penalty shot. One of the guys on the ice said, “Welcome to the NHL Gillies.”
Final 6-3.
