Wild vs. Jackets, exhibition opener

Posted on September 24th, 2008 – 6:35 PM
By Michael Russo

Wild playing 12 NHL regulars tonight. Wild believes Jackets look to be under the minimum, although nobody’s really complaining. You’re supposed to play at least eight NHLers who played at least 40 games last season or 100 NHL games, or are a first-round pick.

I’ll be on throughout the game to give you scoring updates, etc. because I’m not really writing a traditional gamer for tomorrow’s paper. Hey, it’s exhibition.

Marian Gaborik’s sitting up in the press box with his brother, Wild scout Branislav Gaborik.

Jan Hejda hooks Andrew Brunette 3:14 in. Lone scoring chance so far, Antti Miettinen robbed at the doorstep after he couldn’t pull the trigger fast enough.

Good action so far, Wild 5-0 on shots.

6:30 in, Backstrom stone cold robbed Maxim Mayorov on an open net goal with a sprawl.

Erik Reitz just fought Derek Dorsett. Draw.

1-0 Wild 4:37 left in first. Kim Johnsson drives the net down the left side, wheels around the defender, center Blair Yaworski, and scores.

Intermission, Wild outshot Jackets 17-7.

FYI, looks like some of the young guys are getting cut as we speak up here in the press box. Expect an announcement tomorrow morning.

Here we go with the second period:

Anybody know the identity of the “Come on Wild, you….can….do….it” guy, email me?

Former Gopher Danny Irmen just got a five-minute major for boarding Richard Matvichuk. The vet, who’s on a tryout, came up bleeding. But Irmen just checked him with his shoulder. Not a good call at all, and this is a kid who’s trying to make an impression.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Brent Burns have joined me in the Star Tribune seats. “The popcorn is good,” says Butch.

I told them this is where the experts sit.

Wild killed 4:32 of it, and Columbus just took a penalty. No shots.

Jared Boll just went after Weller, but wouldn’t fight him. Remember, Weller and Rick Nash had a huge run-in last year that resulted in a near riot. Remember, Weller then pummeled Tollefson to the ice. YouTube it.

Nolan stoned at the doorstep. Kolanos just whistles one wide. 9:01 left.

This has been a penalty-filled calamity, this period. I don’t like exhibition hockey. Lots of imaginary calls, like this hook against Koivu.

Second intermission. Blahhhhhhhh!

I asked Burns to write for me, but he said there’d be lots of spelling mistakes. But that’s why we have copy editors, don’t you think?

2-0. Benoit Pouliot 2:16 in. Backstrom makes three saves on the other end, and the Wild come the other way. Turns into a breakaway after the circles after Owen Nolan was tripped up at the blue line.

2-1. Jiri Novotny on a PPG. Great play by Jakub Voracek.

Mikko on a shorthanded breakaway hit the post with his shootout backhand. For deadline’s sake, I pray we don’t have to see it later in an actual shootout.

Wild definitely released some players, but nobody with an NHL/AHL contract. They’ll announce after game or tomorrow.

Oh, they won.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Reitz= Schultz in fighting it sounds like. Sounds the edge went to Reitz.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Yeah, he’s pretty scrappy, actually. Glad he’s playing with some of the edge he had in Houston. He hasn’t tended to bring that in his call-ups but really, right now there’s no risk with the penalties and stuff. Good that he’s showing his toughness.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I guess then he is probably a better fighter than Schultz.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

He’s decent. Never been embarrassed by any fight he’s had.

skibum says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Does Columbus have Nash in?

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

It might not have been bad but to get a game misconduct and put the team 5 minutes shorthanded. Not good impression.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Oh, I see Russo’s description above. That sucks for Danny if it’s truly a bad call. :( Though it’s not like he was gonna make the big club, but still you want to not make it because you weren’t good enough. Not because you got a bum call.

skibum says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Jeez, did columbus forget about the holding rule? What is that the fourth or fifth holding call?

Wallshot says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Well, keep in mind Columbus only has half a dozen nhl players in this game.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Mojzis only has 30 seconds on the PK.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

How’s Voros doing?

Wallshot says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

I just checked out that youtube clip of Weller Russo was talking about. Awesome! First he rubs out Nash along the boards with a clean hit, then another guy challenges him and he checks him into the ice, then Tollefson comes in and Weller cold-cocks him and Tollefson crumples to the ice.

I like him already! :-D

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Entertaining, as usual, sunshine. :)

GreenStar says:

put him on the blog Russo! he can’t make as many mistakes as the penalties in this game!

Buddha says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Ah… a little chemistry… Nolan and Pouls???

Buddha says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

They mentioned that Gilles hadn’t played. They just explained it is because of the penalties.

Sorry Ms.C… didn’t mean to spook you.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Yeah Pouliot!

I was hoping they would give Brust a chance.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

That’s a weird combo. But whatever works, eh?

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Why would gillies not play because of penalties?

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Oh, he played earlier. Just not recently?

Kevin in PA says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

skibum says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

When is boogie every on the pp?

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

I am surprised that JL has played Johnsson 24 minutes already

Buddha says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

I don’t know Ms. C, but that’s what they said.

Guess they don’t have the confidence in him for the PK or PP…

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

They corrected it. Johnsson is only at 18 minutes not 24.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Gillies only played 4:22 minutes in all of the first 2 periods. Hamilton was around the same prior to the 3rd period.

sunshine says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Okay — unbelievable stat Johnsson has been credited with 5 hits. FIVE — that C is making him a different player.

ms.conduct says:

September 24th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Yeah, i wasn’t seeing Hammy’s name much. Bummer.

Phew. Okay. That’s fine. I’ll heat up some tortillas and mix up some margaritas for the newcomers…

skibum says:

Kevin in PA says:

Which bailout?

Wild guy says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Obviously, it’s pre season for the refs too. Can anyone understand why Brad Watson called 12 penalties out of the 16 called, including a game misconduct for boarding? What, has he been reffing peewees all summer? And it goes both ways; a mythical hooking with absolutely no stick involved (on Columbus). This guy has to go.
This guy has too go.

Schmidty says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Russo - Trust me, the “you can do it” guy is a complete idiot. He has sat behind me or near me several times and is nothing but an empty can with a marble in it. Rattle Rattle Rattle… nothing but noise.

He knows very little about hockey and loves to hear himself. Class Clown all the way.

Wild guy says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

By the way, why is no one talking about Bergeron? He is the first defenseman the Wild has had that can skate, stickhandle and think. He’s one to watch.

Kevin in PA says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Schmidty? Oy, haven’t seen you since what, Hossa signed with Detroit? Been in mourning this whole time?

Wild Road Tripper says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Wild guy: Maybe because ‘Queen’ MAB makes Petteri Nummelin look like Andre the Giant? Yeah, he can skate with the puck and stickhandle well, but he’s going to get obliterated by Big Bert or Iginla some night this fall…

September 24th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Masked Fan…The Flying Gaboriks were at the X… :P

An uneventful night in St. Paul…at least no one else got hurt.

PMB on the popcorn machine.

Wild guy says:

September 24th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Wid road tripper: Were you even at the game? Obviously watching the Wild for all your life has blinded you to guys who actually have lateral movement.

Bergeron’s too shify to get pasted.
Plus, Iginla’s not going to waste his time pasting D.

We’ve never had a D on the Wild with these moves. Prediction: Top D in scoring (goals + assists).
