Jim Mone from Associated Press should get some kind of award for this shot.

You realize here just how lucky Josh Harding is.

Lineup vs. Columbus:

Veilleux Sheppard Weller
Boogaard Kolanos Clutterbuck
Gillies Pouliot Gaborik
Bouchard Belanger Nolan

Falk Johnsson
Scott Burns
Schultz Skoula

Backstrom

Brust

Wild signed 2007 fourth-round pick Justin Falk to an entry-level deal today. He’ll go to Houston but play tonight — his pro debut. He got three years, $1.575 million plus a $200,000 signing bonus. He’ll make $65,000, $60,000, $55,000 in the minors.

He’s very excited.

More later.

Wow, what a fantastic (and scary) picture! What a relief that Harding didn’t get hurt any worse than he did.

Whoa, that does not look fun. Good thing Josh has strong eyeballs?

Ouch. Morning Russo. Feeling better? Cuz I know being Ohio makes me feel better. *not*

Buddha says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:06 am

Yeah… ouch. I thought maybe it was in the mask and out, looks like it was a bit more involved than that.

Awesome picture though.

GreenStar says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:23 am

Ms C and Buddha already broke the new commandment of being a wild fan by not caring that much what happens to #10. Here I thought they were strong fans of the club. guess i thought wrong…

skoula is like a cooler in vegas. whenever he is around, bad things just seem to happen.

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:30 am

We’re rebel, I tell ya. Here’s the way I feel: I care what happens with Gaby… when something happens. But right now, I see no point in hand-wringing and hashing it out over and over. I did that for a while and nothing came of it, so I’ve moved on to more productive pursuits.

Kinda surprised we don’t know who is in the line-up tonight.

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:30 am

rebels. My lack of typing ability this morning doesn’t bode well for the work I have in front of me today.

couple that with you seeing the aeros and I would figure work is a lost cause

Wallshot says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:39 am

Are the Wild planning on playing a nearly full lineup at ANY time during this preseason? Two games to go and it seems to me there are still a TON of cuts to be made.

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:40 am

Wow, ask and ye shall receive.

FALK! He lives! Holy crap!

Loving that Gillies, Pouliot, Gaborik line. Nom nom nom.

And Cal. Yay!

G*, the Aeros are my work today. :)

excellent.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 am

Falk! Wow!

If he is not in Aeros camp, does that mean that they will send him back to juniors or can they stick him there without attending camp?

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 am

I hope it’s excellent. Cross your fingers for me.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 am

Seriously, when are we going to play our full line?

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:53 am

I have no idea Sunshine. I’m just glad to see he’s finally getting some game time. We have a bazillion D-men in Aeros camp so I dunno.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:58 am

Well he is big and has grown into his body - 6′5 and 215 lbs.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 9:59 am

Are you able to attend Aeros practices as a blogger and ask questions to KC and players?

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:00 am

That is a great, yet scary picture. I want a good one of Hards for my desktop background. Haven’t found one to my liking yet that transfers well. Almost home opener!!!

Old Tyme says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:01 am

That photo is amazing. I can’t believe he caught the injury happening like that, it was so fast.

Nick in New York says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:06 am

I thought Skoula’s stick was lifted? I must have mis-remembered that…

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:08 am

Its interesting to see how Pouliot and Gaborik do.

GreenStar says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 am

when are we going to play our full line

sure seems late to be playing prospects but then maybe it is because the cut so early last year. I’d suspect the final look of the team and anyone seriously fighting to get a spot will be in montreal with the rest shipped to houston or juniors after tonight.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:19 am

The fight is really the 7th defensemen and if Kolanos or Clutterbuck might take the place of Foster.

That does not change at least the top 2 lines and the checking line. We could play these lines at least together, right?

Wallshot says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 am

Neither one of those are defensemen, sunshine, so I don’t think they have much of a chance of taking his place.

Unless you meant ADRIAN Foster… :-D

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:22 am

NiNY- I remember hearing to that Marty’s stick was lifted.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:25 am

I wasn’t clear there are two spots open: defensemen and forward.

Defense: Reitz, Mojzis (7th defensemen)

Forward: Kolanos, Clutterbuck (replacement for Foster)

Made the team: Pouliot and Gillies

Joe says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:48 am

No mis-remembering by you, NiNY. Skoula’s head is all light and airy. Did you think he’d handle his stick differently? ;) It probably only takes a light tap . . . For such a big guy, he’s kind of . . . well, a sissy.

Lemmiwinks_ahp says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:50 am

Happy Friday all…..Advice to everyone: Never get food poisoning. That Sh*t sucks! Been dying for the past few days. Ready for homecoming this weekend and watching the Buffs beat Texas! (cough, cough) Also excited for the hockey season to finally start. Let’s get the damn show on the road!

Wallshot says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 am

I hope Pouliot looks better tonight than he did last game. More and more, I feel like this guy has bust written all over him. He’s got all kinds of puck skill and skating ability, but looks like either he doesn’t understand the game that well or he’s just lazy.

Lemmiwinks_ahp says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:13 am

On a FH note…..how did our entire league overlook Fabian Brunnstrom? Ms. C? Any news on him out of Stars camp?

Deep Breath says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:20 am

Wallshot: I was watching Poo Bah a little more than normal on Wednesday and he look just this side of sh!tty. Not sure how many more “looks” he’s gonna get, but pairing Gaby with him this close to the start of the season seems like a sure-fire way to encourage Gaby to sign on the dotted line (hopefully the sarcasm was coming through loud and clear on the last part of the comment).

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:22 am

Haven’t paid a ton of attention to stars camp Lemmi. I subscribe to a couple of Stars blogs but haven’t seen him mentioned much.

(Ryan Hamilton just walked past me in his Under Armour… man, this is a good, good day)

Found some wireless to pick up here at practice. Pretty interesting as I’ve never gotten to watch them practice before.

Took lots of notes that I’ll need to parse. Not as good as Russo who can parse on the fly. Does look like Dimples is in goal and most of the vets are playing, except Hamilton (and this seems like a late decision as he’s been ferrying his stuff from the main locker room to the “not playing” locker room for the last 10 minutes).

Sunshine, I doubt I’ll talk to anyone today.

This is weird. 2 new goalies, neither of whom are Schaefer. Must have added someone to the roster.

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:28 am

Who is Dimples?

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 am

Wild to sign 2007 fourth-round pick Justin Falk to an entry-level deal today. He’ll go to Houston.

ms.conduct says:

I think Gaby cares more, but in a selfish way. I don’t think Pouly’s heart is in it for himself or his team.

Somebody’s gonna lose an eye on this drill. Sticks and pucks flying perilously eye level.

Nice 5-hole goal by Kassian.

sunshine says:

ms.c: you will have two big guys down there in Falk and Scott.

I wonder if JL and the coaches are giving extra teaching to get him ready for the AHL and NHL.

Does it seem like they are taking a more active role in preparing these guys for the NHL after not having anyone step in last season?

So, I just read Shipley’s blog. He tried asking Gaborik about the contract talks and Gaborik was mum. Salcer is not responding to calls either.

Chicago Wild says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm

For what it’s worth, Chuck Walters, a/k/a the Negative Indicator, “reports” that the Gabby (always two Bs) deal is $9M/yr. If he hasn’t signed yet, he’s not going to. He’s playing high stakes with that trick groin of his.

Chicago Wild says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:30 pm

I should be clear — the Wild’s OFFER to Gabby. No deal. Sorry.

Kevin in PA says:

I’m excited too. I got to see real hockey players. And I get more tonight. Okay, much bloggerating to do.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Shipley also said that he has been giving Gaborik a lot of space. I think that is true of Russo, too. They don’t want to piss him off.

I just think next week, all bets are off and Gaborik has to make a decision.

GreenStar says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 pm

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I am really happy for him. I wonder if it was a numbers game with MacMillan. It sounded like for Falk, the team already filled their overage spots. With MacMillan, he had a guaranteed spot on the junior team and maybe the Aeros were filled at the forward spots.

However, he has a good chance of playing for the Aeros next season.

Bullmoose says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm

$9 mill is Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin money for someone who might be as offensively gifted but doesn’t play as much defense and is pretty much guaranteed to miss games because of The Groin.

Buddha says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Good job Ms. C. Hope you are enjoying yourself!

Goody says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Salcer is not responding to calls either.

Not good when they can’t even get the agent on the phone, much less any info.

He’s gone. Maybe we’ll drop him off in MTL and come home with one (or more) of their players?

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:50 pm

no, no, no. Salcer is not responding to Shipley’s calls. Don’t know if Salcer is taking the Wild’s calls.

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Here is what Shipley wrote:

[ FYI: No news to report on Gaborik talks. Been giving Gaborik space on the subject for most of camp, but asked about yesterday — nothing. He won’t talk about it, period. Salcer is incommunicado.

Lynn said talks are going through the typical ebb and flow of negotiations.

So, just so you know. ]

slapshot6 says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm

That sounds good……..ah….Goody. Maybe we could get the brothers Koivu together….;)

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Thanks Buddha. I owe you big time, man. I’m over the moon.

Danny says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 1:59 pm

When you’re counting D-men, remember that Zidlicky is hurt. He hasn’t played in a while and didn’t make this trip either. From the sounds of things, he could be out for a while. And, even when he’s ready to practice he’ll need to get into game shape.

That creates a spot for another defenseman, at least for a little while.

I wonder how tempted they are to keep Cuma around. Would they rather have him develop in practice and play a bit while there are injuries? Can’t he play in a small number of games and still be returned to his Junior team?

sunshine says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:06 pm

I think the Wild in good conscience cannot and would not allow Cuma to play in the NHL until he gets bigger. If you notice, the teams that the Wild played against in the preseason didn’t have some of the most physical forwards or defensemen.

The Wild were the physical team.

Wallshot says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:06 pm

I like your thinking Danny. I think the magic number is 10 games before they cannot go back to juniors. Can anyone confirm?

Kevin in PA says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm

If they appear in a 10th game, that’s it, they can’t go back to juniors.

slapshot6 says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm

For those of the faithful whom have had the pleasure of seeing some puck “LIVE” what is the overall feeling about the team? Do they look like they are meshing? How’s Boogies skating, is he stronger or the same? What about Koivu, Belanger, and SRV? Does he look lost without Branko? Come on, feed a junky who needs a fix…….

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Hey everyone, my sister-in-law was asking about how much you think you would pay for autographed photos of Burnsie and Veilleux? Not together I don’t think, but seperatly. I think its for a charity and they need to know what kind of price tag to put on it that is reasonable. I don’t know if they are framed or not either.

Wallshot says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pm

ss6, I don’t think anybody is missing Branko. I nearly forgot he ever played for us.

Chicago Wild says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Love the BD, reference G*. Another baseball movie reference since it’s October:

I don’t know what happened to you, Skoula. But if you ever, ever Skoula another play like you did today, I’m gonna cut your Skoulas off and stuff em down your f*ing Skoula!

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:17 pm

SRV, Boogie, and Koivu all looked good in the game I watched. Belanger I didn’t notice much. It hard to tell if the team is meshing yet because too many scrubs are playing that are probably not making the team.

ATX-I would pay more for Burns then Veilleux but since you can get to player appearances here and Burns and Veilleux are both players that are available I have not thought about having to pay for their autographs. Framed should be higher then none framed.

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I am rather bummed now and a little mad at myself. When making hotel reservations for the Northern leg of our honeymoon tour I forgot to check the times the Hockey Hall of Fame was open. I booked hotel for that area for Tuesday into Wednesday and the HHoF isn’t open on weekdays after Labor Day. Can’t change the hotels so am a bit miffed.

Chicago Wild says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Agreed, Wallshot. Love that Branko skated on what was left of his knee in the playoffs — it showed a lot of guts. But his shot…he couldn’t hit the end boards from the face off circle if he tried. Not going to miss him.

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

That sucks, Kgopher. Is this the american version or are you going to Toronto?

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:33 pm

American version. The honeymoon plan was Home Opener, followed by Duluth for a couple days, then US Hockey Hall of Fame, and home. Well, we still going to Eveleth since I can’t cancel that hotel but no HHoF for me. I have never been and the Mr. hasn’t went since he was young and at the time we didn’t have a hockey team. You would think they would have it open during hockey season. Neither one of us thought to check times until after I booked hotels.

ms.conduct says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:35 pm

I lost my faithful status this morning for various reasons but i will offer a response since i was there LIVE…

SRV is fine
koivu in near mid-season form
belanger seems off for some reason
DB was about the same. didn’t see any noticeable improvement but no regression.
you’ll like weller
benny is bi-polar. one game looks like he gets it then the next he looks like he is on his way to the bar leagues.
harding and backstrom both looked ready to go.
#10 only one game and he was trying skate thru 3 defenders again and lost every time.
Brunette is the same as he was the last time he donned the green, wheat and red.

Rob STP says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:44 pm

kgopher says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 2:45 pm

ss6, I feel for you. We have never had season tickets. We just by chance went to Wednesday’s preseason game and it was a little rough to watch. Out shot, not playing well, Hards taken out (after being in hockey heaven with him starting and looking fantastic), but we still won and I still go to see live hockey. We may not get to many games beyond home opener this year depending on budget. I am probably going to tear up even more then normal at the X at Home Opener when that Division Title Banner gets raised. Looking forward to Hockey Season.

Ms. C- We may have to just go do that. I am sure we will have fun too, just a little disappointing that I don’t get the HHoF part in the deal. Oh, well. There is always another time.

1. The Sabres forward’s stick is much higher than Skoula’s.
2.If they were battling, wouldn’t odds be that the forward’s stick would be under Skoula’s?
3. Shouldn’t it be Skoula who is lifting the forward’s stick since he is on Defense?

… good thing I am not a Skoula hater…

Rob STP- Great Princess Bride Quote on that one.

BNAG-The Mr. can’t go to Canada so we have to stick with this one.

The Gunslinger-I hate Skoula and I still can’t COMPLETELY blame, I blame him a little bit, but not totally.

Kgoph, you don’t have to go on the h-moon, but you do need to make it there. Far and away better.

My wife is not much of a sports fan but tries to be somewhat knowledgable about what is going on. I made to both the Baseball HoF and the Hockey HoF in Toronto and a Jays game at Skydome on my honeymoon and returned home thinking divorce was imminenet.

ms.conduct says:

LOL BNAG, I’m trying to remember the last trip we took where sporting events were a central theme. We got to Australia and see about 5 AFL games and a rugby game, we go to Canada for CFL and NHL games, Ohio we got to minor league baseball and the Football HOF. Still no HHOF for me yet, but I know I’ll spend forever there when I finally get to go. May have to bust out the miles sometime and do that.

Anyway, my point is, DH has me very well trained, but probably feels like he’s created a monster.

Yeah, his Skoulas are cruel and tragic.

Which wouldn’t make them Skoulas, at all, really.

Evil Skoulas!

I swear to God, I’ll pistol whip the next guy that says ‘Skoulas!’

Hey Farva, what’s the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy sh*t on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?

Labrador.

Labrador?

Yeah, my dog ate my Skoula and I had to follow it around for 3 days!

Rob STP says:

Skoula kept the Ring. It should have ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure. There’s no strength left in the world of defensemen. They’re scattered, divided, leaderless.

TheGunslinger says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

…too soon?

TheGunslinger says:

This is funny stuff. LOL

From the Blue Jackets beat writer’s blog:
( I got it right this time)

[ The Blue Jackets took one look at the Minnesota Wild’s lineup for tonight’s game in Nationwide Arena and decided not to play center/winger Nikita Filatov. Tom Sestito will take Filatov’s spot in the lineup.

The Wild will dress a large lineup tonight, full of guys who tend to enjoy physical play. Derek Boogaard is among them. Filatov is still getting used to the smaller North American ice surfaces, so he’s prone to carrying the puck too long in an effort to make a play.

Put bluntly: they don’t want the young kid to get his head taken off by a woolly Wild player. ]

toivo says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Here’s what might be an interesting poll.

Is Skoula the least-loved Wild player ever, or is there anyone else who can top him?

Rob STP says:

Skoula is by far the least loved of all time. I was almost alone in my disgust for Philip Kuba, so I guess he was only truly hated in my mind.

slapshot6 says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Well our Mr. Skoula may or maynot be the most reviled but he certainly is not taken seriously in Russoville.

…wanna have sex tonite?

…hughhg. It’s just that I’m really Skoula, that’s all.

Rob STP says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Skoula: Lemaire. Lemaire looks after us. Lemaire wouldn’t hurt us.

Skouba: Lemaire broke his promise.

Skoula: Don’t ask Skoula. Poor, poor Skoula.

Skouba: Lemaire betrayed us. Wicked. Tricksy, False. We ought to wring his filthy little neck. Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both! And then we take the whistle… and we be the Lemaire!

Smeagol: But the fat Harding, he knows. Eyes always watching.

Skouba: Then we stabs them out. Put out his eyeses, make him crawl.

Skoula: Yes. Yes. Yes.

Skouba: Kill them both.

I did an auto-draft for my other hockey league, and I think the computer chose much better. This is based mainly on the fact that I recognize all the player names, which was not true for the Russoville draft. Plus I got both Crosby & Mikko.

Wildfor9 says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Oh, and KIPA, I ok’d that trade, though I really don’t know either player well.

Kevin in PA says:

October 3rd, 2008 at 7:10 pm

I think it’s fair, Wild. Lang can still play and he’ll have a prominent role in Montreal - actually sorta didn’t want to give him up - and I thought you could’ve used bolstering at center. Anaheim sent Bobby Ryan to the minors though and I needed another right winger.
