DR doesn’t like to do it in the open but he does it anyways. The leak isn’t coming from Gaborik’s camp unless they want to look bad. Its coming from the Wild. We don’t know if its a sanctioned leak or not.

During Gaborik’s 2nd contract when he held out, the Wild went public as to the reasons why they gave him the offer they did. The Wild and DR knows that they have to fight the contract talks on two fronts: Gaborik and the public.

Rolston situation - they said that they couldn’t reach a contract because his agent wouldn’t do a counteroffer. Fans Reaction: Let him go. Result: Wild wins.

Veilleux situation - publicly humiliate him by waiving him at a time no team can pick him up because it was 2 days before arbitration. Fans Reaction: Bad taste Result: Wild wins but some resentment

Recent Gaborik situation - offer a deal that the fans and public think he is stupid and greedy for turning it down. Sets up for trade. Fans Reaction: Let him go Result: Wild likely to win as long as trade is decent.

If he signed somewhere for less than $8M (unlikely to happen) I would agree that could be a problem. If he gets 9 or 10 somewhere, I don’t see him talking about offers he passed on. Correct me if I am wrong, but everything out there is conjecture. The Wild have never come out and stated what they were offering. As Russo said, Smug doesn’t like to do this stuff out in the open.
