Friday’s practice update; Nolan good to go for Saturday; 2011 World Juniors to be in Buffalo
Posted on October 24th, 2008 – 2:28 PMBy Michael Russo
Yo, yo, yo.
Every player practiced today except injured Marian Gaborik, who continues to skate on his own. Owen Nolan looks A-OK to play tomorrow against Columbus, meaning the Wild will have to make a roster move, either putting Gaborik on injured reserve or sending a player to the minors.
The Blue Jackets, by the way, play tonight against the Rangers and will be the Wild’s first Western Conference opponent.
Not much to report to you today, other than Jacques Lemaire was in an animated, jovial mood. He should have been on stage today. Every question led to a demonstration. He was running around the interview room like he was playing dodgeball.
Just proves again, Lemaire is most happy when his team plays the way he wants it to play. He was delighted with last night’s game, so he was in a good mood despite the way the Wild lost in the end. But when the Wild doesn’t play the way Lemaire wants them to, even if the Wild wins, Lemaire is sure to be in a miserable mood.
He had a conversation with Brent Burns on the ice. He told Burns, other than those four minutes in the end, he played a perfect game and to keep it up.
Lemaire was also funny talking about Derek Boogaard, who’s already got two assists after having no points last season.
Talking about Benoit Pouliot’s goal, Lemaire said (and it’s too bad you can’t hear the comical tone), “When Boogey got the puck, the net was wide open. And there were two sets of legs. And he hit one of them. And it went back to Benoit in the air. But Ben took it, put it down and shot in. What was your question?”
In other words, don’t ask about Boogaard’s offense.
Pretty up tempo practice. Josh Harding, with his father and sister in the stands, was beaten to a pulp. This guy probably took 10 shots to the mask and shoulders. Then Pierre-Marc Bouchard barrelled into him, but at least it wasn’t the Boogeyman.
By the way, USA Hockey has announced a “major news conference” for Monday at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, and according to sources, it’ll be announced the city’s been awarded the 2011 world junior championships over St. Paul and Grand Forks.
What else? What else? Oh, I got like four emails ripping into Lemaire for calling a timeout there with six or seven minutes left and leading 3-1. My response to each emailer: Are you kidding me? It was the only move, so much so, I repeated in the press box twice, “Is Jacques not calling a timeout?”
Skoula, Schultz, Veilleux, Clutterbuck, and Belanger had just been trapped in the defensive zone for a minute. The Wild iced the puck. It was not allowed to make a line change. Timeout was the obvious move there to rest the players. Belanger wound up playing a shift of 1:49. Skoula played a shift of 2:19. Schultz 2:02. An average shift folks is 40-45 seconds.
If you’re actually one that’s criticizing Jacques for this, you either weren’t paying attention or you’re just searching for things to rip Jacques about.
OK, good day.

[…] Russo’s Rants – […]
and clutterbuck just ran the fumes out of the tank trying to beat the sabers D to the puck to waive off the icing, which had to be close because I thought he beat him but the board obscured my view.
tom powers has been a columnist for as long as i can remember. i remember murphy as the pp beat writer and was it Snow who was the beat writer for the strib?
G*, I heard a lot of booing after that call. I didn’t get a good look because the defenders stick was blocking the view of the puck, so Cal’s stick must have missed because his stick was closest to the puck (or the call was blown).
Yo yo yo??
Seems JL’s joviality is contagious.
Or Russo is hitting the *bux a little harder today…
I like a happy JL.
Cal isn’t a whiner and he looked pissed. He obviously felt he’d beat the icing.
I thought the boys played pretty darned good also, with the excption of our boy Skoula…he mad a perfect pass to the Sabres at his own blue line, and the guy was only like 10 feet away. I had to yell from my seat upstairs “Skoula, we are wearing RED tonight” ’cause I thought he was confused about which team he played for. If we play like that with our full lineup, we will be just fine…
I thought Skoula had a really good game. For Skoula.
All I know is I was sitting in the 11th row on that I heard Cal yell out a big “no f*%^& way.” Then the linesman gave him a pretty mean stare.
Couldnt see the puck at all becasue of the boards but Cal’s reaction told how he felt.
Re: Handzus, Armstrong, Hickey, 2nd. from LAK to Wild for Gaby on the last thread.
Except for the 2 centers for a wing part I can see this sunshine. Handzus has not been on a winning team since Philly but if JL likes him it is OK. He has 2 years left after this one at a $4M cap hit which is not great but I never expexted DR to go big on a UFA next year anyway. Since I think LAK could use Harding, I wonder if he was included the Handzus part of this trade could be upgraded to Frolov, O’Sullivan or Brown.
It never ceases to amaze me that whenever Skoula tries to skate the puck up ice, he seems to look surprised when he still has it entering the opponent’s zone. Here is a suggestion…pass it to someone who is used to carrying the puck! 9 times out of 10 he just dumps it in the corner anyway…with Belanger, Koivu, Benny & Shep, there are plenty of centers to move the puck up ice…pass the thing already!
If anyone in Russoville is interested in getting more Wild talk on the local “sports” radio channel, there is an opening from 9-noon.
Word, Russo, on the time out. Greenlay didn’t note the obvious reason for it: his had a weak line on the ice that was tuckered out, so he rested them. Duh.
Also, just throwing this out there as an avid kool-aid drinker as it pertains to the Gaby situation. With the Wild’s decent start, if the team continues to play well do you think it may help “entice” Gaby to look at the big picture, think that there is a legit chance to win here and take the 8 million per that Ballgame has supposedly thrown on the table?
Brown is not going anywhere.
The Kings are going with LaBarbera for now, but Erik Ersberg and Jonathan Bernier are likely to be their goalie(s) of the future. Don’t think they’ll ask for Harding.
When a player has room to skate the puck, they usually do. Part of why he has room to skate may be because there are two of the opposing team’s players doubling up on one of our other players. Would you rather Skoula skate with the puck or pass it to a Koivu, Belanger, Benny or Shep who has a guy all over him?
I’d rather he safely skate it as long as possible and if a passing opportunity doesn’t present itself, dump it deep. That is a much better strategy than passing from the D-zone to an un-open player and ending up with the puck on the stick of the opposition at the center red line. Which I’m sure would garner much derision.
I say put UM on IR. See how that works for the character assassination. The Salcer would have to explain to media across the NHL how he was hurt.
And who questions a coach for calling a time out? Does calling a time out really change the game so much that it leads to a three goal melt down? Nah.
For the Goofer jock sniffs out there, this is what Vanek said about Lucia, Minnesota and the U of M during his conference call this week:
Can you touch more specifically on what Don Lucia a did for you? And coming back to St. Paul, is it still special to come back to Minnesota and play hockey?
THOMAS VANEK: I still spend my summers in Minneapolis. Still have all my friends, a lot of friends there, who I went to school with and played with.
It was a great time. Don did a great job. I think Lucia is a good coach. I think Mike Guentzel and Bob Motzko, when I was there, did a tremendous job as well. I think we have a great atmosphere there. I think the facilities are one of the best in the country.
So I think all in all, the school is great. I think the atmosphere is good. It’s a hockey state. It’s fun to play there. You know, I still enjoy coming back. I’m definitely looking forward to come there. It’s going to be a tough game against the Wild. But it’s going to be special for me. I’m going to have a lot of my wife’s family that lives there. All the in-laws, all my friends will be there. So I think it’s going to be a good time.
They have Bernier, who is almost ready. Harding might be slightly better than Ersberg and Labarbera. I could be overrating Harding, here.
I think Handzus can probably play on the wing. Handzus and Armstrong are probably the only two guys that they are willing to give up.
I’m glad Nolan is ready. This last game, the Bruno-Koivu-Mittens line didn’t look to be getting many good chances. Perhaps the other teams have had the chance to review tape and realize they need to pay the most attention to that line. Having the Nolan-Center-PMB line back might take a little of the defensive pressure off of 15-9-20. Also, I was thinking during our PP’s last night that we really could have used Nolan in front of the net.
- Thanks Kevin and sunshine - I was not aware how much talent LA had after LaBarbera. If Handzus plays wing, the Wild would be deeper at C than they ever have been and/or Benny could play wing which I would like to see.
- KFAN fires Dubay - http://www.startribune.com/sports/33220469.html?elr=KArks7PYDiaK7DUvckD_V_jEyhD:UiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU - I thought he would get one last chance.
- DB’s comments on Gaby - there is always hope as long as he is on the roster and as long as he can be taken down in a hacky sack game.
Buddha, I believe most assume that during the time out, JL said something to the effect of ‘time to start up the prevent defense’. If anything, I expect he said ‘Doing good boys, let’s win the faceoff, cross the center red, dump it and change.’
Goody, While I am totally in agreement with your point, it just seems to me Skoula looks either suprised when he has room, or confused when he gets to the opposing blue line, not knowing what to do. I have no problem with dump & chase, but when you have puck moving guys who don’t panic at the blueline it leads to more scoring. One of the best in the league for carrying the puck up ice is Scott Gomez, who almost dares he opposition to try & stop him. I can’t stand it when D-men who can’t skate try to rag the puck up ice. At least Burnsie has a flair for the end to end. Skoula would go end to end, and just leave the puck in the corner.
I’m just a posting machine!
It was nice to see Boogaard get a regular shift last night. He actually showed some hockey talent. He had some nice stick work in our end at one point to keep then clear the puck. Also, he stuck with it on Pouliot’s goal.
Ulfie, it could also be that Skoula rarely does it and so isn’t really comfortable doing it. Perhaps the answer to the ‘what do I do now?’ moment is for him to actually do it more often…
Putting Gaborik on IR won’t matter that much. Since it doesn’t sound like he’s playing tomorrow, he will have miss 4 games already. People already know that he’s injured and has a history of injuries.
Salcer can’t control the hockey side of the game. He can only control the business side.
However, since DR is concerned about the cap and having cap flexibility, it might be more prudent to send either Mojzis or Clutterbuck back to save a few thousand dollars. Also, better to have them playing then sitting in the press box.
Just heard a commercial on the radio advertising Thursday’s game vs. Buffalo. I think I’ll try to get ticke… wait a minute…
Ok, a 4 minute debacle. That collapse was as bad as the Pens 3rd period collapse against the Caps a few weeks ago when they blew their lead. This one was just condensed into 4 minutes.
The time out was the correct call. Anyone who disagrees can argue the point with me.
I thought Cal got the puck too, judging by his body position, but boards obscured the puck and sticks.
The 2nd buffalo goal was on a screen, and was a good one. Can’t really fault anyone for that, end of a shift, and they were chasing.
The OT goal was at the opposite end of the ice, so I couldn’t see what was going on in the crease with all the bodies, but someone had lost a stick, and Burnsie went behind the net to pressure the puck handler. Everyone had collapsed down low anyway, but my question was whether the puck was covered or not. I’d guess not, but with all the bodies in the crease it was hard to tell.
So, lesson learned, I hope. 1 point in the bank though, thankfully.
Wasn’t Moses technically sent down? But there’s some rule about he can stay up for so long or something? When’s that time period up?
Am I remembering wrong???
Yeah for Boogie!
Yeah, its been so glaring on the PP with no one in front of the net. So, yeah, I am glad Nolan’s back.
But then they don’t get the stellar tutelage of the Zen Master, Mr. Lemaire…I think they would be better off staying here, but the roster limit is only a temporary thing for both of them anyway. Eventually, Foster will return, and Crabby Gabby will be “healed”, so the clock is ticking on both…Keeping Mojzis makes more sense, since he has shown he can play wing if needed…
Meh, Buddha. Is Hoskins active in our roto league? Made him a trade offer but I don’t think he’s done anything in about two weeks.
That collapse was as bad as the Pens 3rd period collapse against the Caps
Nah, wasn’t as bad. You guys got a point against a non-conference foe.
I recall a power play in the game where there was NOBODY in front of the net, the d-man had broken a stick, and all we could muster was a weak wrist shot from the point that my dead mother could’ve stopped. I like it when Nolan / Boogie / Bruno crash the net looking for tips, etc… we definitely missed it last night. Not much screening going on in front of Miller. Thankfully, he was able to pad Burnsie’s stats…
Goody: I think they can stay with the team for 30 days.
He was assigned to Houston but continues to stay on the Wild roster. With Nolan and Foster on IR, the Wild has a 23 man roster. With Nolan coming off IR, someone needs to go on IR for them to stay at 23 or someone needs to be sent down. If one of these things don’t happen, then they will over the player limit.
Well said Mr. Russo re: timeout called in Buffalo game….couldn’t agree more.
I’m hoping the Wild play just as well against Colombus (I’ll be there!!) as they did against Buffalo but with a different final outcome. I thought the guys did a great job of matching Buffalo’s speed. Saw a lot of improvement on break out with Ziddy in the line up, I was really impressed with his play for a first regular season game.
Yes the outcome of yesterday’s game sucks and may be somewhat “typical”, but it’s a long season everyone. Can’t judge 82 games by game #5.
I have heard so many different takes on this game. I have it on TiVO, but yet to see it. One group says I hope they play this well in the future (including JL), and the others say they were slow, looked lost, etc.
Amazing how people can see such a different game.
At the time, I said great move. Lemaire had no choice. They were gassed and with the icing had a faceoff in their zone. I notice we always have a few Skoula bashers even when he plays a perfectly solid game. I often wonder what game these folks are watching. Actually I thought, particularly early on, Schultz had some bonehead plays. But we did play a great second period and 15 or 16 minutes of a great third. I too thought we couldn’t lose. Oh, well let’s get the Jackets tomorrow–back in 102. Maybe they will be gassed from playing tonight.
Folks need to relax a bit. Gonna be a long, tight race all the way through. Don’t forget that the Wild didn’t clinch a playoff spot until game #79 last year and didn’t clinch the NW until game #81. Will be nice to see Olden and Groin get back in the lineup so we can see exactly what a full roster is capable of this year.
I thought, overall, it was a great game for the Wild other than the last four minutes.
I thought Skoula played alright; however it really disturbs me how much opposing forwards manage to be in front of the crease when he’s on the ice. It seems as if he doesn’t want to try to move them for fear of further interfering with Backstrom’s view.
I also think that Lemaire’s timeout call was a great move in order not only to get his player a rest, but calm them down as well. They were scrambling and just managed to get the puck out for the icing.
As far as the game being “typical” for the Wild, it’s only the second time we’ve blown a 2-goal lead in the third, so I fail to see how this is typical. Whether people want to admit it or not, this is a good team that we have and we’re not going to be sent into a tailspin because of four minutes of poor play. What people need to realize is, despite DR not being able to land the big free agent signing, he landed players that work well in the system that Lemaire coaches and, in the end, having a team full of players that play well together and work well in the system that they play in is a lot more importan than having multiple “superstar” players on the team (though the ideal is to have a set up like Detroit has where they have both).
Going back to our defense, though, I really thought that Johnsson quite possibly played his worst game in a Wild sweater last night. He looked like he was trying to do far too much on both ends of the ice and seemed to be pressing a little bit also. I think you’ll see him refocus and come out and play much better tomorrow.
Mosey has 30 days from when he was waived, which was Sept 28 or 29, can’t remember which. So his time is running out unless they want to officially call him up again.
I usually give Skoula the benefit of the doubt, since Jacques seems to think he can do no wrong, but sometimes I get frustrated. Does anyone wonder how Miller got the #1 star of the game after letting in a floater by SV, and putting one in his own net? How does that qualify you as the #1 star.
As soon as Boogie lights the lamp, I’m changing my name. Mark my words, if he gets semi-regular shifts like last night, it will happen.
He came close last night and I thought he was going to get it.
after letting in a floater by SV
that was a floater? wow, high standards.
miller was the star for buffalo. the wild had 30+ shots and a decent pct of them were high quality. if it weren’t for miller, the sabers don’t win. makes him #1 star.
That Pouliot “floater” was a great shot. Miller played well other than the blooper highlight.
Boogie is the new ‘Voros’
I thought Miller was fooled by the speed of PoolBoy’s shot. I think it was deflected as he released it and that messed up his timing.
I wonder…does Miller swear in Cantonese too? ![]()
Is Ryan Miller Jerry Seinfeld’s long-lost brother?
How can Lemaire be in a jovial mood after that gutless finish last night-blow a 2 goal lead w/4 or 5 minutes left and then lay an egg 40 seconds into OT? I don’t get it. You still lost the game Jacque-bottom line. I wish him and Risedork would ride off into the Canadian sunset. Maybe finally after this year.. maybe.
LOL, kj. Not often you can see the expression behind a goalie’s mask from far away. But, last night was an exception! Even sitting behind Backstrom last night, you couldn’t tell how or why the OT goal happened. It apparently just did. Buffalo tends to start a game slowly and then pick up steam right about the time its opponent thinks the game is locked up. The Wild played well except for those last few minutes. Play 50 - 55 more games like that for all 60 minutes and we’ll get to hang another banner.
I think we must have been sitting by Vanek’s in-laws. Sure were a lot of Sabre fans carrying on nearby.
It’s game 5, we haven’t not gotten a point yet! This is not a bad start, Lemaire isn’t bad. Riser…we’ll see
Wild have the best PK (tied with LAK at 100%) and one of the top PPs. We’re averaging something like 3.6 G/GM. I’m so tired of all the naysayers and negative attitudes towards the team. A majority of the MN fans are the absolute worst fans (bandwagon) in the country.
Bottom line, it was game 5 and we still got a point!!!
Sorry.
so, anyone up for a Russoville meet and greet before the game on Monday night?
I will be in attendance with my old man.
Blue Crocs, anyone?
My Mr was actually praying for Boogie not to score last night, he kept saying to the brother-in-law, “oh good god, Boogies gonna score and she’s not here to see it. I’m a dead man if he scores and she’s not here to see it.”
Nick, the Mr and I may be up for it, we don’t have tickets for that game but we may be persuaded to make the trip into St. Paul.
Blue Crocs, anyone?
i’ve upgraded to tan
Do you realize how bad Crocs are for your feet G*?
And for your appearance. ![]()
I have not been around today, but I just wanted to say this quote: “f you’re actually one that’s criticizing Jacques for this, you either weren’t paying attention or you’re just searching for things to rip Jacques about,” is the best thing ever. Amen to that Russo!!
Ok, so I suppose I should tell you about my kinda odd day. So it started with a Fossie sighting near the X. I was tired and caffeine deprived however so I could have totally been off the mark. So I had to go in early for a meeting at the p.t.j. I thought it was the entire gift shop staff, but I was wrong. Just me, my immediate supervisor, the boss lady, and (gulp, ahhh panic time) the boss ladies boss lady. So it turns out my boss lady is moving, and does my immediate supervisor want to be the interm boss lady, and would I like to be the interm immediate supervisor. So for the short term I have a real job. Said interm real job, could lead to permanent real job, so even though I’m trying not to get my hopes up of this being long term, we are trying to decide how to celebrate. Maybe I’ll see if there are any reasonably priced tickets on the ticket exchange for Mondays game. Wish me luck on all fronts.
I have Green Wild KoolAid Crocs. I don’t normally wear them in public though. Apparently, they are bad for the feet… Good house shoes though.
I agree with Ride, there is a large segment of fair weather bandwagon MN fans in all MN sports that lack any rationality. You don’t have to be gulping down the KoolAid but honestly… Some of the comments on JL are completely unwarranted. Um, geez, we are starting out the year pretty well considering the whole #10 mess and we are coming off a division title. Sure, lets get JL and DR out of town so we can whine bitch and moan about the next coach and GM. Well, first, bitch whine and moan that you didn’t get somebody else and then try to run them out of town. It’s like a hobby for some.
Boogie was stickhandling in a phone booth last night!
College hockey is gonna die if they keep calling games like they are right now. Christ, it’s killing the game!
Frickin Ness really is good though. I had questions that he could make the jump although I saw him in the State HS Tourney and he impressed me there. I was just worried he needed a little time but I stand corrected.
I got this message, “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” I said the witchin with a b word a couple times, is that banned from Russoville?
Anyhow, I’ll repost with appropriate ‘w’s

DD, I got that message one time and all the message was.. Dude that Phenufe is a tool. Who knows what sets off the moderators.

Legace injured himself (lower body injury) when he tripped over carpet laid out for Palin. Bishop had to replace him. St. Louis loses the game.
Maybe…. don’t have Palin drop the puck anymore. Flyers lost when she did it, too. So the lesson learned is do not allow politicians to drop the puck or the home team will lose.
My first html hotlink ever!
That’s funny sunshine. ATX just spent about 5 minutes telling me how to make a link about that.
You beat me WiATX.
Just barely. And I can’t say that has ever happened before!
NiNY, Would love to see you but Mrs. Woodcock is taking a visiting Brit to that game. Just enjoying a bit of a 15 year Laphroaig at the moment that I got as a gift.
Jottings
Gabby: Very simple. Mister Know it all has come to the conclusion that Gabby would stay here, and kinda wants to.
The reason why its not happening ? DR is refusing to give Gabby an annual salary that compares to the top 3-4 players in the NHL. We know that figure is 8.7 to 9 million.
DR is very strict with playing a leading role in the NHL for his ability to negotiate reasonable hockey contracts with his players.
It would be easy for DR to sign Gabby by satisfying his ego and paying him the extra salary. By DR playing strong to his stance he is likely increasing Gabbys interest in proving his true value to DR by showing what he can do in the Eastern Conference since DR wont pay him what those stars are getting paid.
I am very likely exactly right
Signed: Mister Know it all
I can’t do hot links.
Did it ever post BG? I’ll try to modify it…

mmmmmm, 15 yo Laphroaig is one of my scotch favorites .
- I have noticed that posts with two links in them get moderated.
- Wild.com says the CBL game is in HD but it is not in the Comcast programing guide - Here is hoping Wild.com is right.
I love my Mr. He asked how I wanted to celebrate my temporary new job. I was half joking when I said tickets to Mondays game, he came back half hour later and told me to see if there were any left on the Ticket Exchange at a reasonable price, and then he handed me his credit card and walked away. I will now be enjoying Mondays game from section 210 instead of from the couch. I love my Mr.
Congrats on the maybe-perma-job, BG!
So, I’m kinda pissed about the Palin carpet thing. I lurves the Manny… however, it’s cool that big Ben got his first NHL start. Shame it was a loss but they were already down. Anyway, glad I voted against her yesterday. Hurting my goalies. That’s a no-no.
Thanks MsC! And now that I have tickets for Monday I’m very very happy.
Is it proper for women to be called tools, cause that’s what Caribou Barbie is; a tool. Because she just has to drop the puck MannyL. is now hurt. I didn’t hear but did she get boo’d like she did in Philly?
Crap! I’m gonna be late to the p.t.j. Later!!
Do you realize how bad Crocs are for your feet G*?
i stay off escalators
if backstrom tripped over the carpet thursday would y’all be b!tching about neagle? I seriously doubt Palin went to the blues and demanded that she drop the puck.
15 yo Laphroaig is ALWAYS a gift, wood.
Bandgeek, we’re still pulling for you on the employment angle.
blog down or is everyone enjoying the nice weather before it snows tomorrow?
Yeah, that’s what I’m doing.
Darn snow.
I’m watching the Texas Tech v. Kansas game with a giant dog head in my lap competing for laptop space. Laptop is winning for now.
just took the kids swimming. What a nightmare. They were fine. But, man, what a PITA that whole process is. Mad props to any stay-at-home parents out there.
Anyone got ideas as to what lines might look like to start the game tonight outside koivu’s?
Nick, i did the pumpkin patch today with my girls
Lemmiwinks, I offered you a trade in Fantasy Football. Look it over will ya?
MiG, it looks like Reitz, Mosey, and Gillies may be the scratches. No word on lines yet.
gillies might need a seat for a game or two.
Anyone at the game thu tell me if butch was as bad as he looked on tv?
Food
boy the goofs really struggled with purdue today but a win is a win i guess
