I'm not sure what Schaefer's and Brust's contracts are, but I can't imagine they would go out of their way to resign with the Wild organization if Backstrom and Harding are resigned. It would be great to see Backstrom/Harding turn into a Nabokov/Toskola scenario like San Jose had where the Wild could trade one for a big time draft pick or prospect. If he is allowed to test the UFA waters, you can bet your sweet Bertuzzi that a massive, massive contract will be offered up his way by a team looking to secure one of the premier goalies in the league (assuming he has a strong season, of course, which I think is safe to assume). If the Wild has ideas of retaining Backs long-term, it would behoove Ballgame to get that deal done and not let him sniff UFA food. I know that Backs is saying all the right things right now about loving the area, the stadium, the pets, etc, etc. But I have a feeling his thoughts may change when a team offers up $6 million a year+ for his services.
