Happy Halloween folks; Montreal Canadiens 2, Wild 1

Happy Halloween everybody.

The Wild pumpkins above — I can’t seem to get pictures to look good on the blog — were carved by my friend Mike, his brother John and their eight-year-old nephew Kyle, a Wild fanatic.

That BOOgaard one is cool with the ghost. Get it? Boooooo!

OK, onto the game.

Basically, the Wild returned home just long enough to give their fans enough aggravation to last the nine days it’ll be gone on this upcoming four-game trip. I’m especially looking forward to yet another early morning flight in a few hours to Phoenix.

It was another record setting night for the Wild, only this one for futility. The Wild tied its franchise record for most power-play opportunities WITHOUT scoring a goal. It went 0 for 10. How about this stat? The Wild has gone 0 for 9 or worse five times in franchise history. All five times came at home.

“When we had a great opportunity, the shot was either wide or on the ice. And this goalie (Carey Price) is really good on every shot along the ice,” coach Jacques Lemaire said.

With every wasted power play, the pressure just built in the arena, and then the Wild was in deep trouble. In the second period, Montreal took six consecutive minors. The Wild had four 5-on-3’s, although only one was a long one.

But the Wild could get nothing going and really never generated any true great chances, in my humble opinion.

At one point, the Wild was caught so unaware after a 5-on-3, Robert Lang emerged from the penalty box to go on a shorthanded breakaway.

It had to be frustrating to watch if you’re a Wild fan. For instance, defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron had seven of his shots blocked.

As for Brent Burns skating some shifts at forwards, Lemaire actually made this decision after warmups, he said. Owen Nolan missed the game with a lower body injury (he missed three recently with what appeared to be a right hip injury, but I don’t know if this is the same thing).

Because the Wild basically has relied on one line this month, Lemaire decided he wanted Burns up front to create another scoring threat. It worked when he scored 1:31 into the game. Lemaire, the king of checking, said you can’t check all the time. You’ve got to score sometimes, he said.

He also called out Pierre-Marc Bouchard for being invisible the last few games.

According to the injury report, Nolan will not initially make the trip. Marian Gaborik will be evaluated Friday, but it hasn’t been decided if he’ll make the trip yet. He skated with the guys during an optional this morning, and with so many practices on this weird four-game trip that has no back-to-back’s, you’d think he’d be there.

By the way, the Wild didn’t lose both games of a back-to-back set in regulation during the 2007-08 season. Here was their first try at back-to-back’s this season, and it lost both games.

Talk to you from Phoenix. Practice is 2 p.m. PT time Friday, so you won’t hear from me until very late.

Happy Trick-or-Treating, and you better wear a costume, or Larry David won’t give you candy.

It was a decent game tonight..tons of habs fans there. They even did the ole ole chant prior to warm ups.

Apparently we were sitting behind the new bride of the PA anouncer for the Wild and to the right of a poor man’s Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Carribean.

Man Bouchard stunk tonight…he’s gotta start looking for his own shot. At least get it on goal to create some chances. Pouliot had one of “those” games too.

Good luck in Phoenix…

Man that was tough to watch :(

Anyone else think they’ll wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat sceaming “POWER PLAY!”?

What’s worse is we’re heading in to November which historically is a very bad month for the Wild. Bring on the chicken littles…

You can’t win.

ms.conduct says:

Oh, I don’t mind the Koolaid drinkers. Probably because I lean more that way. The chicken littles though… it gets to the point where you’re like, “Why are you even a fan of this team if you spend so much time disgusted with them?”

But then some people revel in misery, so I guess that’s just how they roll. I can’t relate, though, and I find it pretty pathetic. Why spend so much energy in your life on something that you don’t get some joy out of?

Goalieguy says:

Tough game to watch, especially after watching Dallas last night working the power play so well down low. We spent so much time on the perimeter, wasting time and not getting quality chances…as the Don said, so frustrating.

The was the first game in which I thought not having Gabby was a big deal.

So many Habs fans, and yet I could hardly give away a pair of extra tix I had tonight. Perhaps the soft economy has finally reached the NHL.

One bright note - Mittens continues to impress me. He has nicer hands and more skill than I was expecting from him.

Funny thing about the calls tonight. The slash on Mikko was a phantom call, IMO, certainly to everyone sitting around me. Of course, the Habs capitalize and score on the ensuinig 5-on-3. I thought really all of the penalties called on the Habs in the 2nd were legit - not make-up calls. No matter, Wild can’t do a thing - the best PP chance during the 2nd was Lang’s breakaway.

Oh well. That’s the way they go sometimes.

*head explodes*

Early candidate for worst Three Stars selection of the night: T.J. Oshie, St. Louis. He was third star. Tuomo Ruutu was second star. Chris Mason was first star.

Score was 1-0 Carolina. See Ward anywhere? Granted he made just 19 saves, but he had a shutout and wasn’t a Star! Oshie had two shots.

A fight would have liven up the 2nd period, that’s for sure.

Dan says:

October 31st, 2008 at 4:44 am

the only reason you spend half a period on the powerplay, including three 5 on 3 chances, and not score a goal is bad coaching. Furthermore, the idea a pro hockey player can’t hit the net is a bit disconcerting. Throw in this team is all passers and no finishers, and you have the recipe for a long, long season.

For a pro team they have a lot of peewee elements. 3 and 4 guys behind the Habs net is unacceptable. Giving up breakaways on a 5 on 3 powerplay is unacceptable. Not having any sustained drives in your opponents end is unacceptable. Having Risebrough and Lemaire running the team is no longer acceptable.

My immediate PP improvement? Keep PeeWee or Butch or whatever you want to call him OFF the ice.

He was brutal in the 2nd period. No doubt.

Sorry, but coaching the PP is organization. The bozos on the ice still have to execute.

They came back a bit in the 3rd and had better chances - Price made a sick left-skate save on a redirection.

Oh…and B-B-B-Benny had another sub-AHL performance. Does that guy think another contract is automatic?

for sure it was all coaching. I feel like an idiot for not realizing that. when you’re right, you’re right…just sayin’…

Deep Breath says:

October 31st, 2008 at 8:29 am

Frustrating to watch that second period. My question is, does/do the Wild understand that while on a 5-on-3 powerplay, the advantage is down low, not out at the blueline? A little annoyed after a while of watching PMB skate around with the puck at the bluleline. Quick, tape-to-tape passes is what is mostly affective with a 2-man advantage, not standing still with the puck waiting for something to happen. Just like in basketball, you have to move your feet.

Bouchard needs a new nickname, I was thinking something along the lines of “Princess” or “porcelain”. When was the last time he tried to take the puck to the net. Take a hit you little pansy. He was not the only one, just the most obvious. Guys like Brunette and Koivu are going to quit trying so hard if they feel like they are the only ones willing to get dirty.

MiG says:

Not putting all the blame on him but its pretty easy to defend a PP when Butch is out there, its basically a 4 on 4. They give him so much room knowing he wont go to the net and he just skates circles and squeeze a pass in where there is nothing. I probably yelled 10 times go to the net.
A frustrating but a fixable problem, but what do I know?

ms.conduct says:

Trippin, when I was at the game Wednesday, I was thinking his name should be “Soft Serve”…

sunshine says:

Its easy to defend the PP when the skaters on the PP are barely moving and passing it to each other only. Its easy to defend the PP when there is no one screening the goalie or going to the high slot.

One guy slightly behind the net, 2 guys on the half wall, 2 guys at the point and just staying there.

That is what’s the problem. No skating whatsoever to get open.

Amazing to see all the empty seats at that game last night. And the Wild fans that were there sat on their hands most of the evening (at least until people stood to boo their team at the close of the unending power play). My goodness there were many times were the Habs fans sitting behind us were making the most noise in the building. I have never before seen a game where there were three 5 on 3’s for the same team, and all in the same period I believe. Eight straight penalties called on Montreal. Wow! And as we are all aware, no goals scored.

And to all who say “dump Gaborik,” if he refuses to sign then I guess we have no choice, but if we do trade him we had better get some offense in return. As has been the case since the very beginning, the Wild still have great difficulty not only scoring goals but generating offense altogether.

Hockeydad says:

October 31st, 2008 at 10:10 am

Lang’s breakaway did not come on a 5on3 - he was just out of the box as the Habs 4th player.

They missed Gaby on the PP. He can be very good coming off the half wall and going toward the net to create his shot, or if he gets attention, dish to an open guy down low. Last night, it seemed to me that the half-wall guy wouldn’t commit to just go at the net. He would start toward the net and then back up. Otherwise, there seemed to be a little too much standing still.

So, they lost a home game in regulation. I guess I’m done with them, too - I just didn’t see that coming this year.

Hockeydad says:

I know it’s a blog and OK to get a little casual with the writing, but have we just given up on trying to make any sense at all?

fatboy says:

October 31st, 2008 at 10:13 am

Bear, not classic underachievers, in fact just the opposite. While the PP was completely non-existent last night, other than the Lang breakaway, the defensive side of things are, as always, solid. That would not be underachieving. To be able to hold defensively against a team like MTL is not easy, and we did extremely well last night doing so.

Puck, who are you, Captain Obvious today? Of course we would want offense in return, but in case you haven’t noticed, we have scored 3 or more goals in 5 of 9 games. Considering the defensive mind of JL, I would say that is pretty good, and Gaborik has missed most of it, in fact, I would say all of it, because even the games he did play, he wasn’t playing 100%. If he is unwilling to sign for whatever reason, he needs to go, and regardless, he needs to put in a full effort to help the team no matter what. We’re plenty good at generating chances, we’re just not proficient at finishing those chances.

Still like MuN’s theory on Gaby, Spezza, and Bulin.

fatboy
I have stated in previous posts that I am not in favor of “dumping” Gabby like many here seem to be. If he is unwilling to sign, than of course, I would prefer to get something for him rather than nothing.
But, I also want to point out that many of the trade “possibilities” that have been thrown around this and other hockey blogs are nothing but fantasy. Minnesota sports fans found out when trading Randy Moss and Johan Santana that you don’t get fair value when trading a “superstar,” and I fear that in a Marion Gaborik trade as well. I know he is often hurt but he is by far the best offensive threat we have, to trade him for a couple of prospects or the former Cretin H.S. defender (as has been rumored heavily) is exactly what I fear.

Nick in New York says:

kj says:

That JL…he’s complicated. Like an onion.

If you want to look at the Wild’s offensive prowess this year, look no further than the success (and lately LACK thereof) of the PP.

25 goals scored this season, 10 on the PP.

When the PP dies, the Wild do not score much 5 on 5. That is their true vulnerability.

kj says:

October 31st, 2008 at 11:16 am

Especially when you see they’ve given up 20 goals - and just 2 (or is it 3?) on the PK.

fatboy says:

October 31st, 2008 at 11:20 am

To compare trading Gaby with the likes of the Moss/Johan trades just isn’t in the same ballpark. Generally speaking, you’re right, you won’t get “fair value”, but then again, what exactly is that? Gomez coming over from the Mets in the Santana deal was a pretty good deal. Napoleon Harris in the Moss trade worked out pretty well to until he freaked out. Unfortunately we used the draft pick in that deal to pick Troy “Can’t see the Ball” Williamson, which obviously didn’t work.

Sure Gaby is the best offensive threat that we currently have, just like Moss was when we traded him. If his contract issue, however, keeps him from playing hard every night or is a distraction to the team as a whole, I would gladly trade him away for a 2nd tier scorer and prospects/draft picks (Higgins/McDonagh). Moss got to be a distraction in the locker room, and the only thing that I would be fearful of is that Gaby’s situation would be the same.

It’s too rare that you’re going to see a superstar for superstar trade these days.

On a different issue, there are whispers suggesting the Bruins are interested in Marian Gaborik. B’s scouts took in a few recent Wild games to see what other assets they might be able to get their hands on if a deal were to be struck. There’s nothing imminent, though, on the Gaborik trade watch. - http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/bos081031.html

So Gaby plus at least one current Wild player (Benny?) for ???? Harding could be in the mix too - both mid-30s Bruins goalies are UFAs next year.

GreenStar says:

B’s looking to strengthen offense by adding defense - http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/bos081031.html - includes these parts:

While the Bruins appear to be scouring the market for some extra offensive weapons — they’ve had scouts watch the Minnesota Wild lately — their primary concern is adding a puck-moving defenseman.

On a different issue, there are whispers suggesting the Bruins are interested in Marian Gaborik. B’s scouts took in a few recent Wild games to see what other assets they might be able to get their hands on if a deal were to be struck. There’s nothing imminent, though, on the Gaborik trade watch.

So any trade ideas from this speculation? I would guess that even Harding could be in the mix as both Boston goalies are in theor mid-30s and are UFAs after this year. However, I think we all know that Manny would not be coming back in any deal :)

i actual feel great. in a vacuum, last night was bad. in the grand scheme of things, i liked what I saw. I liked it far better than wednesday night and more than monday. sometimes you are going to win games you shouldn’t (monday) and lose games you shouldn’t (maybe last night and buffalo).

i don’t care what team you are, being ont he PP for half a period is tough on your squad. the PP guys logged a lot of ice. so towards then end we have gilles, who is not ready for primetime, shep, SRV, while skoula, weller, clutter et al, rested. more penalties by the habs were not what was needed. after the first 5 minutes of no goals, the boys start to press with each subsequent one and then nothing good happens.

if they would have come out for the 3rd and rolled over, i’d be a little worried but they came out strong. that’s ok.

Busy at work this morning haven’t had time to catch up…

Our seats (thanks again to the Mrs’ friend/coworker) were in the corner on the end the Wild shot at twice - 8th row!

We got a good look at Burns’ goal. Clutterbuck made a nice swinging poke which fed the puck into the slot at one point. Unfortunately Pouliot couldn’t do anything with it. Belanger had a beautiful chance there in the third - almost! I don’t know if it carried through on TV, but near the end Burns got cross checked repeatedly in the back of the head as he was bent over the side of the goal - hence the scrum. Mikko really wanted a piece of someone in all that.

On MTL’s second goal, it looked like Harding flinched and moved his head left allowing the puck to go over his right shoulder.

Can anyone tell me what happened in the first when Mittens went down, lost his helmet and his stick? I was looking elsewhere at that moment.

The team loses to arguably one of the best (top 3) teams in the league 2-1 and it’s the end of the world, as we know it! Sure the PP was painful last night, but some nights are like that. If the Wild had executed at pre-game PP percentages, everyone would be thumping their chests today.

What was it, Game 9? Will some of you be out at a State Hospital by January? Yes, it would have been nice to have Gabby on the PP last night as he commands a lot of attention when he is out there, but Mr. Tenderloins is still MIA. This team still has one of the best 8-10 man core groups of any team in the league. My concern is that the remainder of the 20 on game night bring their game up, that is my biggest worry with this years model. The core group will not sustain an over-reliance on them for 82 games.

PP all JL’s fault last night? I looked hard but I didn’t see him out there. I’m presuming the Habs PK was just loafin’ around out there? Some night’s special team execution is better or worse then others. The PP was doing fine prior to this week.

“The team is never going to win in the playoffs with JL as Coach” I did some research on the “internets” regarding NHL history. I found out that this team with JL as Coach went to the Conference final in 2003!!!

“Having Risebrough and Lemaire running the team is no longer acceptable.” Huh? Are you serious? Get a grip man! And you would do what or get whom?

Yeah…..Because he is BY FAR the biggest problem/distraction on this team.

I just don’t quite get Skoula-bashing….

fatboy says:

October 31st, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Not Skoula bashing, I love him and the way he skated right in front of the net with the puck last night, when he can hardly handle it. I really love it when he plants a toe in the ice and falls flat on his face to give up another odd man rush. And I really love it when he just tosses the puck to an opposing player to generate another scoring opportunity in the wrong direction. Oh, I’m sorry, I guess I am Skoula bashing. Six Goalie wanted trade speculation on TFP’s Bruins deal, and I say they can have #41, free of charge. That’s all.

Deep Breath says:

October 31st, 2008 at 1:15 pm

WHile Skooba has played better to start this year, he has brought on the majority of his “bashing” on himself with some of the, how do we say, unbelievable miscues in the past. If you go to youtube, simply do a search of “Skoula moments” and I think you will see where the Skoula bashing comes from. Arguably the greatest of all time occurred last year during Gaby’s 5-goal barrage against the Blueshirts when Skooba just stopped standing up while he had the puck on his stick to the right of his own net. Of course that puck was promptly fired into the Wild net. Another prized moment came during the New Year’s Eve game against the Sharks last year at the “X”. After fighting like he11 all game long to eventually tie the score in the 3rd period on, I believe a Parrish goal, Skooba got his feets tangled up on the ensuing center-ice faceoff which allowed SJ to walk in and score the game-winner. But, as I wrote, he has played better to this point in the season. Heck, I have even seen him run into players from the opposing team…ON PURPOSE!!!

Just reading that rumors of Kovalchuk being traded are starting up….I would take that in a second for Gabby. Is it possible? Russo, any ideas?

Kevin in PA says:

No, he’s coming to Pittsburgh for Staal and one of our defensemen.

With ATL languishing with NYI at 2 wins, DR should encorage Gaby and $alcer to talk contract in the Peach State - great weather during hockey season and plenty of games vs. FLA, TBL, CAR and WAS for you Gaby!

Kevin in PA says:

Yeah, because Atlanta wants to trade for a poorer (and yet somehow, richer), more injured version of Kovalchuk. ;)

What happened to the cheese curds at the X? They’re horrible now - not even cheese curds!

I think our PP got picked up by some cute Latina in Dallas and missed the plane ride home. :)

The Wild have this wonderful trend of PP not working for extremely long stretches and then bang, it starts working again. Hopefully, we’ll score during our next PP.

Iy was one bad game for the powerplay. Albeit a gawdawful game, but just one game. Didn’t the team have two pp goals on Wednesday night? What should concern folks is that the Wild continues to struggle 5-on-5, in terms of putting the puck in the net. The team has had just one line it can rely on to this point in the season. Others are really going to have to step it up offensively.

Six Goalie System says:

KiPA - If kj is right that Salcer = $alcer than at least ATL would actually sign someone with more stature than Todd White or Hainsey. Plus, JP Dellacamera’s calls on Gaby’s many goals would make for good highlights. If ATL trades with the Pens again, their fans might start calling the team the Unwanted Penguins :)

While on the subject of Skoula, has anyone mentioned how near the end of the game Bouchard skated over and pretty much knocked Skoula off the puck and brought it up himself, and no one else was around.

ms.conduct says:

Sheesh, didn’t see that but I’d rather have had Skoula with the puck last night.

DB: good point about the struggle 5-on-5 and we have talked about that. I have read about the lack of offense by the other three lines and that the Koivu line can’t do it all by themselves consistently. They are going to draw the checking lines and the top defensemen pairing and the other lines need to generate scoring chances.

That’s where are scoring is coming from - the Koivu line. Last year, we had two legitimate scoring lines. This year, it looks like to be 1 1/2.

But the PP — going 0-10 is not something you can hide from. If its 0-3, oh well… but you can’t say oh well when its 0-10 with three being 5-3s. Its hard not to focus on it right after the game.

Hey…you cannot lament the lack of 5 on 5 scoring without Green* Craigslisting his tix.

It’s a Russoville tradition!

You guys do realize Florida = soft ice = more Gabby groin injuries. I thought it was him who was quoted as saying that he hates playing in L.A. because the soft ice is hard on the groin apparently…. this is all something to think about along with these trade rumors. I would have to belive other teams would take that into consideration as well…. just throwing it out there.

just another Mike says:

October 31st, 2008 at 3:24 pm

but, I think I also heard something where he said he loves playing in L.A. too so who knows, but I did hear a few times that the soft ice seems to aggravate his fragile groin.

kj, or as fitz sorta put out there… Lost in a Cul-de-sac would be a pretty awesome band name too! :)

j-a-Mike, one would think that if a team were to sign a player of Gaborik’s calibre for mucho dinero, they’d pry open the wallet and spend a few bucks on improving the quality of their ice as ‘groin insurance’. It never ceases to amaze me that a team which puts so many $$ on the ice every night would put up with crappy ice. How much can an upgrade to the HVAC and ice plant cost? A couple million? Five? Peanuts compared to the team salary.

Nick in New York says:

Goody: but wouldn’t you also want to let people in in like two seatings or something and keep the doors hermetically sealed otherwise?

That’s gotta be a fire hazard.

just another Mike says:

October 31st, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Goody, I have to agree! But when they only put 6,000 people in the seats…. maybe times are tough, aye?

Oh, and my bad, sorry guys …. Gabby’s groin is like steel. All you scouts out there, he’s an iron man, let me tell you. I mean hacky sack soccer is a rough sport you know….. haha!
